iOS 27 introduces a system allowing users to select AI providers (Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, or OpenAI's ChatGPT) for Siri and writing tools, but Google Gemini is already powering native Siri and Apple Intelligence features by default without user consent, representing Apple's admission that it has fallen behind in AI technology and must now license out both privacy and in-house intelligence to outside companies.

Your iPhone Is Already Running Google’s AIAjouté :
Apple built its entire brand on keeping your data inside. Well, iOS 27 is the moment that looks like it's about to end. So, here's what's happening. iOS 27 is on the horizon. It'll probably be coming out a little bit later this year, and Apple is introducing a system called extensions. This lets users pick which AI tool powers Siri writing tools and the image playground. You'll be able to choose between Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, or OpenAI's ChatGPT directly from the settings. That part already got covered, okay? So, here's the part that a lot of people have missed from this news. There's already a separate deal.
I've talked about it before that's already active where Gemini powers native Siri and Apple intelligence features by default. No setting to change, no prompt asking permission. If you haven't opted out of something you didn't know existed, Google's AI is already handling all of those requests.
So, iOS 27 isn't Apple opening its platform out of generosity. It's Apple finally admitting that it fell far enough behind that there outside companies now competing to run the AI layer of roughly 1 and 1/2 billion active iPhones. Apple built its premium on privacy and some in-house intelligence. Now it's having to license out both of those. The question isn't whether this is necessarily better for users. It is, newsflash. Uh the question is, does Apple ever get that position back? Or is the iPhone just a Google and Anthropic delivery device now? This is going to be really interesting to watch how John Ternus, the upcoming CEO of Apple, handles this. I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments, especially if you are an iOS Apple user. Let me know. I'm Tim. This is Understanding AI. Stay tuned.
