Black Consciousness, Culture Shock, and Identity in South Africa #shorts

[00:00:00]My mother was PAC, Pan Africanist Congress, and my father was a member of Azapo.

[00:00:06]And we grew up with a black consciousness mindset. And we thought like that's home. Like Azania. I mean [clears throat] So when we got here >> [laughter] >> Um the So I didn't know. I understood there were other political parties, but my understanding was because home was PAC and Azapo uh that's what's happening. Then you get back and it's like no, that's not quite what's happening.

[00:00:32]Uh I think my first culture shock was we stayed with my mom's family when we moved to South Africa.

[00:00:40]And I had never We stayed in Mitchells Plain, which is a township. I think it's called the Cape Flats. I don't know if Mitchells Plain is part of the Cape Flats, but it's uh a colored township.

[00:00:53]I'd seen colored people before, okay?

[00:00:55]But I'm These are my cousins. These are my people. Like all good.

[00:00:59]And I remember someone saying to me at school like I'm not black.

[00:01:04]That girl you are black.

[00:01:08]And the way she said it was like there's there's a difference and cuz we looked the same, but she was very adamant and I was like, "Okay." So I would say coming home in the beginning was confusing.

[00:01:21]Uh And yeah, already interesting.
