During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, German forces under Otto Skorzeny's Panzer Brigade 150 attempted to deceive Allied troops by disguising Panther tanks as American M10 tank destroyers, welding sheet metal panels to alter their silhouette, removing the commander's cupola, and repainting them in American olive drab with white stars; however, the disguise failed because the distinctive Panther features like interleaved road wheels and suspension system remained visible, and Allied intelligence had already detected unusual enemy activity, resulting in four tanks being destroyed and three crews killing themselves rather than surrender.

Ersatz M10: Skorzeny's FAKE Panther tanks at the Battle of the Bulge (December '44)Added:
On a bitter winter morning in December of 1944, deep within the dense forests [music] of the Ardans, a strange procession of armored vehicles crept [music] across snowcovered fields toward the unsuspected Allied front.
To many American ground troops who saw them at a distance, [music] they appeared to be familiar American tank destroyers painted with [music] white stars and unit markings.
But these were no American tanks.
These were German panthers [music] crudely altered with sheet metal repainted, modified [music] and disguised to resemble US M10 tank destroyers.
They were part of one of the most audacious deceptions of World War II. If you are interested in how German puner [music] companies actually fought in World War II, I've put together a free ebook based on manuals and battlefield reports. You will find the link in the [music] description.
By late 1944, the strategic situation for Germany on the Western Front [music] had grown desperate.
After the Normandy breakout and [music] the rapid Allied advance across France and Belgium, Hitler was determined [music] to launch a counterattack that could split the Allied armies and if luck favored him, [music] potentially force a negotiated peace.
The Germans chose the Ardans forest where a perceived weak allied sector offered a chance for surprise.
This became known to the Allies as the Battle of the Bulge. Germany's last major offensive in [music] the West launched on the 16th of December 1944.
Central to Hitler's plan was a special operation involving English-speaking German troops in captured Allied uniforms, moving behind American lines to [music] spread confusion, seize bridges, and disrupt communications.
Otto Cortseni, already famous for the daring rescue of Musulini in September of 1943, was chosen to lead this clandestine force.
Scorzani's unit was formally redesated [music] the Panter Briada 150 a 2,000 strong formation pulled from branches of the German army SS Luftwaf and [music] Kicks Marina and other units. A truly unique order of battle in the German army.
A key element was not just the use of German soldiers wearing Allied uniforms, but the use of captured [music] American tanks and vehicles to travel in authentic guys through Allied territory.
Scorzani requested [music] hundreds of American jeeps, trucks, armored cars, scout cars, [music] and especially tanks. But the reality fell painfully short.
Out of the large quantity of [music] Allied equipment requested, the unit received only a handful of vehicles, a few scald cars, around 30 jeeps, and [music] roughly 15 trucks.
To make up for this critical shortage of captured tanks, Scorzeni staff turned to what they had in [music] abundance, panther tanks.
some of Germany's most advanced [music] and formidable armored beasts.
These would be used to create a bizarre and almost sural class of [music] combat vehicle that would go down in history as the erat [music] mamm. If you enjoy this video, don't just watch history, [music] engage with it. Check out my World War II word search books on Amazon.

The German term erat means replacement.
The erzat M10 was essentially a panther a house G or G version tank disguised to resemble an [music] American M10 tank destroyer.
A true M10 [music] had a distinctive angular hull and an open top turret with a powerful gun and light armor. And it [music] was a common sight with American tank destroyer battalions across Europe in late 1944.
The Germans lagged [music] real M10s, so they built fake ones.
Technicians and armored crews welded thin steel plates on the [music] turret and hull of several panthers, crafted new [music] panels to mimic the outline of an M10 turret.
Removed the Panther's [music] commander Koopola and repainted the whole vehicle [music] in American olive with white stars and unit markings.
Scorini's order of battle [music] and much of the historical record indicates that five [music] panthers were thus modified for use by the paner brigade 150 marked [music] as vehicles of the B company of the 10th armored regiment of the fifth armored division.

The engineering effort [music] to disguise a panther, one of the most recognizable German tanks SNM10 [music] was far from trivial.
The Panther [music] was a large modern tank, heavily armored with sloped frontal armor [music] and a powerful 7.5 cm main gun.
In contrast, [music] an American M10 was lighter with thinner armor and [music] a very different silhouette.
Bringing these two together required extensive field modifications.
According to US Army technical intelligence [music] reports compiled after the battle, the conversion process involved removing the Panther's command coupula from the turret and replacing it with a simple hinged hatch cover, giving a flatter turret profile.
welding sheet metal [music] panels to the turret and upper bow to create an approximate resemblance to the boxy shape of an M10 turret.
adding false rear extensions [music] and plates to conceal the distinctive sloped rear hull of the Panther, [music] complete with approximate American styling lines, albeit crude [music] and visibly different to a trained eye and painting the vehicle in US olive drab with white stars [music] plus American tactical markings.
Even with the above, certain aspects of [music] the panther couldn't be fully hidden. For example, the interled road [music] wheels unique to German tanks remained discernable and the suspension design [music] was nothing like the American tank destroyers vertical spring system.
Moreover, the weight of the additional plating and structural additions did nothing to alter the [music] panther's heavier silhouette.
But Scorzani's [music] planners hoped the disguise would be conceiving enough, at least at a distance or in [music] poor weather or during sudden contact, to allow these tanks to close with Allied [music] forces undetected or at least delay recognition long enough to exploit confusion.
The deception plan of the Panser Briada 150, [music] including its disguised Panthers, was put into action in [music] late December of 1944 as the Ardan's offensive [music] hammered forward.
On the morning of the 21st of December, elements of [music] Scorzani Kam Group moved toward the Malmi area.
In theory, the Erzat [music] M10s were to blend with real Allied vehicles, penetrate through [music] advanced positions, and strike deep behind lines, disrupting communications, supply lines, and command posts.
But reality quickly diverged from theory.
American forces lying along the front line had by that [music] time received intelligence alerts about unusual enemy activity and potential deception operations.
As Scorsani's force advanced, Allied trip wires detonated signal flares [music] in the fields outside Mammadi, exposing the approach of the disguised [music] Panther tanks.
American infantry and [music] tank destroyers responded with heavy fire.
The camouflage of the Erzat M10s [music] offered little protection against concentrated anti-tank fire and soon US harvesters were called in to shell the advancing German tanks.
The result was [music] disastrous for the disguised Panthers.
Four of them were knocked out [music] in the engagement and three had their crews destroy them with demolition charges to prevent capture.
The story of the Erzat M10 [music] has inspired debate among historians and armored warfare enthusiasts alike.
ves it a stroke of brilliance or a desperate gamble.
In hindsight, [music] the execution of the disguise was technically clever, but practically [music] flowed.
The panthers might have fooled an untrained [music] eye at long range or in the heat of battle's confusion, but in clear visibility, the silhouette and especially the suspension and track layout remained unmistakably German.
In operational terms, the Erzat [music] M10s made neither a decisive impact nor a significant [music] tactical breakthrough.
Their loss in the fields outside Malmadi underscore the limits of such deception.
Without [music] surprise, without mass effect, and without timing synchronized to [music] the broader battle, the disguise was little more than camouflage on a doomed vehicle.
In [music] the decades since 1944, the Erzat M10 has captured the imagination of modelers, military historians, and battlefield enthusiasts.
[music] Rare photographs of knockedout vehicles, technical intelligence [music] reports, and detailed postwar assessments have provided valuable records of these [music] unique vehicles.
The German eratans stands [music] as one of the most unusual episodes of the battle of the budge.
a curious blend [music] of psychological warfare, deception, improvisation, and [music] desperation.
From the moment these vehicles rolled from their workshops in graphen, disguised and repainted in American [music] colors to their ends in the snow, they embodied both the ingenuity and the fragility of Germany's final great offensive in the west.
More [music] than a tactical deception, the Erzat M10s reflect [music] deep psychological and strategic pressures Germany [music] faced in late 1944.
Against overwhelming Allied material and [music] manpower superiority, commanders like Scorseni resorted to unorthodox methods to try to level the odds.
While the result was not a battlefield success, the erzatense [music] endures as a fascinating story of camouflage, conflict, and the fog of war itself.
