In criminal trials, defendants may claim self-defense as a legal justification for their actions, and the burden of proof rests on the prosecution to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed the crime; the trial process involves jury selection, presentation of evidence, and consideration of witness testimonies to determine guilt or innocence.

Karmelo Anthony murder trial: Jury selection underwayAdded:
We're going to start in McKinney where jury selection is underway in the Carmelo Anthony trial. He's accused of killing another teen at a high school track meet last year. Security at the Collin County Courthouse is tight. Our Trevor Sahakian's been outside the courthouse today. So, Trevor, tell us what have you seen?
>> Well, Karen, there are a lot of law enforcement officers here, more than I've ever seen at this courthouse, in fact. Pers- prospective jurors arrived early this morning as did about a dozen or so protesters. Now, those protesters on both sides of the trial set up on the perimeter of the courthouse. Some carrying flags and banners and chanting, others playing drums and tambourine.
Besides the local media, there are social media influencers and supporters of the two families watching the proceedings inside. 19-year-old Carmelo Anthony is charged with the murder of Austin Metcalfe. Police say the stabbing happened at a Frisco ISD track meet in April of last year. A witness told police that Anthony came over to Metcalfe and others in a tent on the bleachers. The 17-year-olds went to different schools and didn't know each other. Metcalfe told him to leave, then Anthony reached into his bag and said, "Touch me and see what happens." One witness said Metcalfe touched Anthony, and another witness said Metcalfe grabbed Anthony. Police said that's when Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalfe once in the chest before running away. Metcalfe was taken to the hospital where he later died. According to a police report, Anthony admitted to the stabbing claiming it was self-defense. He's currently on house arrest at his parents' home. And jury selection is expected to go for at least the next couple days with opening statements in this trial expected to begin on Thursday of this week. Live in McKinney, Trevor Sahakian, CBS News Texas.
>> Thank you very much, Trevor.
We want to walk you through the timeline of this case now. Now, the stabbing happened on April 2nd of 2025. Carmelo Anthony was arrested that same day. He was released from jail on bond less than 2 weeks later on April 14th.
A few months later, Frisco ISD allowed some members of the media to view surveillance video of the stabbing under open records law. Our investigative producer who viewed the footage said individuals were difficult to identify, but the video shows a sudden movement under a tent in the bleachers followed by an interaction between two figures.
Several people are then seen walking or running away.
More than a month after that, on June 24th, Carmelo Anthony was indicted for murder, and on July 9th of last year, the judge set a trial date, getting us to today.
Our coverage of the Carmelo Anthony trial will continue throughout the day.
Our J.D. Miles is also in the courtroom for jury selection.
