Frost and freezes occur when cold air pools in sheltered inland valleys, particularly in areas like Ashtabula, Trumbull, and Mahoning Counties, where calm winds prevent air mixing and allow temperatures to drop to freezing levels even into early June; this phenomenon is called 'decoupling' and is most likely when high pressure systems create clear skies and calm conditions.

Cleveland area weather forecast: Frost Monday night, rain Tuesday nightAdded:
Well, let's turn things now to an update on this forecast, Mark. I'm sorry, do you have a call that you need to take?
>> She planted them. She planted them all.
>> [laughter] >> She stuck them in the ground. I know. I know. I want I Yeah, I get it. I get it.
Okay. All right, I'll tell her. Okay.
Um that was a call from the American Society Against Cruelty to Petunias.
>> [laughter] >> I didn't know that even existed.
>> And uh That's made up. Admit it.
>> upset with you planting all your annuals, Betsy. My petunias are in the ground.
They are living their best life right now, and they are about to get real scared.
>> Well, let me just There are petunias screaming out right now going, "Ow, it's cold. Help me." Not really. There's not going to be widespread freezes. I think we're going to You know where you live. You know where you live in those sheltered inland valleys. You know the areas where the cold tends to pool, and you wake up with frost on the rooftops even into early June. You know where you live, right? I think tonight is your possibility for another frost. I don't think it's going to be hugely widespread, although there is a possibility, Betsy, as you know, as winds calm down, we call it decoupling.
It's a possibility, especially in Ashtabula County, Trumbull County, and Mahoning County that that the cold air could just sink right to the ground because there's no wind to spin it around and mix it up a little bit. We'll see.
Uh we're cautiously optimistic here that Betsy's petunias will survive. I think they will.
57 at 6, 56 at uh 7. A little chill at the ballpark if you're going down to watch the Guardians. 52, 50° at 9:00 p.m. We're going to stay dry. So, here's our headlines. Now, cool sunshine and dry weather. What's new? Frost and freezes tonight for the entire 3 News viewing area. Rain Tuesday night, but it looks like now it's going to clear out early enough for Wednesday to stay dry.
So, that's good news. 53 right now feels like 53. Humidity in the middle 50s there. You can see we've got a 60 in Akron, 61 Canton, 63 Dover New Philly.
That's not terrible. Not bad. Winds right now are gusty up to 15 mph, but I do believe they're going to calm down, especially east into this area here.
Ashtabula, Trumbull, Lake County, Geauga County, Portage County. Best chances for frost and freezes are there overnight tonight. Skies are going to clear out.
We're going to throw on high pressure one, high pressure two, and again, high pressure tends to lead to clear skies and calm winds. So, we have frost advisories out for the majority of our viewing area, freeze warnings for counties that border Pennsylvania for temps a little bit cooler. Here's where we are at 6:00 a.m. That would be a freeze. Youngstown pretty close.
Ravenna, if we decouple in Ravenna, you're going to be closer to 32, but areas farther west, they stay warm enough where it's just isolated frost.
Tomorrow looks good. Clouds thicken up during the day. We're in the 60s, then rain comes in overnight, but by Wednesday morning, we're dry. We're going to be cooler, in fact, near the lakeshore. Temps are going to cool during the day through the 50s. So, cooler near the lake and falling temps Wednesday. So, overnight lows, yeah, even in Cleveland, 37. We're going to go tomorrow 66. Our national design mart hour by hour after a little frost here and there to start our day. Clouds increase, stay in mild. Union Home Mortgage 10-day.
>> [music] >> Middle 60s Tuesday, a cooler Wednesday and Thursday, but look, we turn the corner 65 Friday, 78 Saturday, 80s by next Monday. I think even Sunday we could touch 80.
That would be amazing.
>> cosign that. I'm all about that.
>> Look at all those 70s. What?
>> Yeah, hey, look. I'll take all that.
>> tie-dyes coming out. I love it. Don't worry about the rain. We'll deal with that.
>> Thank you, Mark Johnson. We'll see you in the next half hour.
