[00:00:04]First, Auschwitz was not synonymous with the Holocaust. The great majority of the 6 million murdered Jews died elsewhere.

[00:00:12]In death camps like Treblinka, in mass shootings, in ghettos, in starvation.

[00:00:17]Second, Auschwitz was not built to murder Jews. It was set up in 1940 to terrorize the Polish population and destroy the Polish resistance.

[00:00:27]For over a year, Jewish prisoners were a tiny minority. Only in 1942, as the final solution escalated, did Auschwitz pivot to mass murder of Jews on a European scale.

[00:00:39]Understanding the Holocaust means letting Auschwitz be a real place with a real history, not only a symbol.
