Political obstructionism can prevent legislation from passing even when it has strong merits and broad public support, as demonstrated by the Save America Act's failure due to Republican senators' personal opposition to President Trump rather than the bill's merits.

John Thune Makes Stunning Confession — It's Worse Than You Think
Added:We may finally have an answer as to why John Thune hasn't gotten the Save America Act passed yet, and it's going to leave you very upset. What's up, guys? My name is Jesse Hughes, and you are watching Resist the Mainstream.
In a closed-door meeting, according to several sources, John Thune allegedly admitted that the reason the Save America Act has not been passed yet is because some Republican senators so strongly hate Trump that they're never going to pass this bill even if 80% of the country wants it and even if it's a strong bill on its merits. Now, this is absolutely insane to see. But before we get to that, before we get to anything else, make sure you hit that subscribe button so that you never miss any of our content.
Now, this is a reason. We've finally been given a reason, but it's not a good reason.
Your job as Senate Majority Leader, Senator Thune, is to get your party in line and to get them to vote for what the president puts forward.
Mike Johnson has been able to do it.
The House of Representatives is arguably more chaotic and more dysfunctional than the Senate. The House of Representatives arguably has more personality conflict than the Senate ever has.
The House has several members that probably hate Trump more than members of the Senate do. And yet, Mike Johnson has been able to successfully get them all to vote for the president's agenda, no matter what the bill is. So, why are you not doing your job?
Your job is to get past the personality conflicts and to get these people to vote, and you are failing at it.
This is literally your job description.
So, why are you not getting the job done?
Do you join in the feelings of these senators?
Do you hate President Trump that much that you're going to obstruct his agenda and pass the blame on to everybody else?
If that's the case, you need to be replaced.
You need to be replaced by somebody else who has the courage and the backbone and stands behind President Trump.
You need to be replaced with somebody who's actually going to go out there and get the president's agenda passed despite all the personality conflicts that might be found in Congress.
If you're not willing to do it, then we need somebody who is. We tried to get Rick Scott. The base tried to get Rick Scott. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out.
But we can just as soon replace you as we can replace any other member in the country.
Look at what happened to Bill Cassidy.
Look at what happened to Thomas Massie.
Watch your back, Senator Thune, and get the job done.
Now, I want to hear what you guys think about this. Drop a comment down below telling me what you think, and let's watch this next clip together.
>> Without fair, secure, reliable elections, our constitutional republic can't really thrive. The American people certainly can't thrive and aren't well served by a government in which honest, secure, fair elections are routinely observed.
That requires us to have laws in place to protect them. Now, the states run the elections.
It's typically up to the states to figure out the procedure by which they do that, but under Article 1 of the Constitution, the Congress also has the power to uh make or amend uh rules governing the conduct of federal elections.
I feel really strongly about the Save America Act for this reason. There are unique vulnerabilities baked into the cake in existing election law, uh especially those governing federal elections. Some of this has to do with the 1993 statute called the National Voter Registration Act, also known as the Motor Voter Law, and the way it was interpreted a couple of decades later by the Supreme Court, wrongly but conclusively, as, you know, restricting somehow, prohibiting in fact the states from asking for any type of citizenship verification once someone has registered to vote using the federal NVRA form, which you typically fill out at the at a DMV.
Those vulnerabilities are there, and they've gotten steadily more pronounced in recent years as we've had a flood of non-citizens pouring into our country.
And as we've made it easier and easier for people to vote, often without any verification not only as to citizenship, but on election day many states not requiring, in some cases adamantly prohibiting any type of voter ID, photo ID at a polling location.
Like I don't fight for every piece of legislation with the same degree of fervor or aggressiveness as I do the Save America Act.
I'm not going to stop, and the reason I'm not going to stop is because there are some things that really matter this much.
If we don't do this, if we don't do everything in our power to fix this now before this election, it could be too late, and it could get more and more difficult to bring about these reforms.
So, for those who disagree with this, for those who don't share my enthusiasm for it, I respect your right to disagree.
