30 Whimsical Spring & Summer Sewing Patterns (10 FREE!) You Need To See! | Intermediate!Hinzugefügt:
These are my top 30 whimsical sewing patterns for spring and summer to challenge you, motivate you, and to get you to add even more whimsy into your life.
Hi guys, welcome back to my channel. If you're new here, I'm Rachel and I share sewing and pattern making videos to inspire you to sew your own clothes at home. Today, I'm super excited because I'm going to share with you 30 super whimsical sewing patterns. These patterns are graded intermediate.
However, if you are a confident or advanced beginner and you have patience and you are ready to perhaps search a few techniques on YouTube, you can tackle some of these as well. In any case, I hope these patterns will inspire you and motivate you to keep practicing your sewing and achieve something super whimsical that you can wear to bring more magic into your days. For the moneysavvy girlies out there, I have included 10 completely free patterns in this video. So, if you don't want to miss out on any of those, make sure you watch till the end. In today's video, I'm going to share with you patterns for whimsical tops, corsets, skirts, dresses, jumpsuits, and even accessories. Before we continue, I just wanted to clarify that these are intermediate patterns and therefore beginner skills might be mentioned but not described in depth in the pattern instructions and that is completely normal for intermediate patterns.
Beginner skills are sort of taken for granted and it is assumed that if you are purchasing an intermediate pattern, you have beginner skills under your belt. That being said, that doesn't mean that you can't go and look for supplementary instructions or guidance on YouTube and still make it through the pattern as a confident or advanced beginner.
Okay, now that all of that has been said, we are ready to get started with corsets. The first pattern that I wanted to show you today is the Aignon corset by Mood Society. This is a free pattern and it is a beautiful corset with a deep scooped neckline that comes in two peaks either side of the bust at the front and at the back which I think is a very interesting style decision. Very different. Another really cool feature about this corset is the very deep basque waist and the dramatic contour of the waistline which accentuates the hips. These would look phenomenal as it is but also on top of a shirt because of the shaping of it. I like especially that the waistline would accentuate the flare of the shirt at the hips.
In terms of construction, with this piece you will learn lots of really good skills if like me you are obsessed with corsets. This one comes with piping on the edges. So you will learn how to sew piping.
It of course has bon. So you will learn how to sew bon channels and install rielene bon. You will also learn how to use eyelids to close the corset. I love the fabric choice in this particular picture. I think this motif is super super whimsical and elevated. And I love the subtlety of the color of the piping as well. Something really cool that you can do on the Mood Fabric website is that you can go straight onto the free pattern website and you can select shop the look and you automatically will have everything you need to make that exact piece exactly as you see it, which I think is super cool and super handy.
Love it when I don't have to browse through a million things and get overwhelmed. So that's something that might be useful for you if you like this corset as much as I do. The next pattern is also a corset style top. It is a bodice and this one is the princess bodice by patterns by pattern cost. This one is a bodice that has princess seams.
So you will get to practice sewing with princess seams. It also has a bus waist that comes to a very pointy V and it has a beautiful strap corset closure at the back. But something super cool about this piece is that it also has a zipper closure for ease as well. The protagonist in this pattern is of course the cloud of handsewn organza at the top that really really brings these pattern to next level whimsical and dreamy. Next we have a corset style dress and top and that is the Gemma corset style dress and top by Lizzy Patterns. This one is more of an entrylevel intermediate because it isn't a full-blown corset. It is a corset style top and dress. So, it is constructed so that it is resembling a corset, but it doesn't have bon and bon channels.
Instead, this pattern has a sheared back. Really easy to fit to your body and to throw on. It is a strapless dress that comes in maxi and mini. And you can also choose to make a strap corset style top as well. So you get three views with this pattern. With this dress, you will get to practice sewing a V bodice with gathers, which can be tricky. And it also has an invisible zipper right at the back of the sheared panel. So, these are the two intermediate skills that you will get to practice with this pattern.
The next is one of my favorites, and I've been meaning to show you these for forever because I find it super whimsical. The most whimsical corset style top I have ever seen. And that is the tulip top by Fortive. This pattern has such beautiful maxi scalloped hem at the bottom. I love how the closure is not on the back but on the sides. You have the option to use eyelids or straps. And I find the shape and size of each panel super flattering and harmonious. I love these rounded shapes.
I think they bring so much romanticism and fantasy vibes to this top. Whimsical enough that you can feel a little bit more magical, but also wear it everyday.
Looks super good as it is, but I do love it on top of a t-shirt as well. huge fan of the patchwork version that you see in this picture and I love how they have color blocked well how they have used contrastive straps in this picture as well. Of course, we have panels which means that you could totally color block this piece as well for extra funkiness.
I just can't get over that scalloped bottom. I love it. Okay, it is time to move on to the next category which is tops. The first top of today is the rider blouse by Mads Studio. It comes in three views and the protagonist of this blouse is that maxi yolk around the neckline. You can choose to make it gathered. You can add a ruffle if you wish. And you can also make these a button-down top. All of these elements, the ruffle, the gathering, the buttons, make this pattern a little bit more intermediate together with the design of the sleeves. You can choose to make the sleeves short or long. And what is cool about them is that they have these decorative pin tucks and they are cuffed with binding. So you will practice using binding as well. Really frilly and playful and quite a statement piece.
Next one is another blouse and that is the Chile blouse by Pauline Alice. Very breezy blouse with lots of pin tucks and gathers. I particularly I particularly like how this blouse has a straight line from one sleeve across to the other where the gathers come to. I think this is a very interesting design choice. It creates almost like a yolk effect. I also really love the high collar and the deep slit at the back that closes with bows. The sleeves also have pin tucks and so does the hem. So, lots of techniques are involved in making this piece. It looks super fresh and comfortable, especially if made with linen, I'd imagine. Next one is the Kendula blouse by Mood Society. This is another free pattern and the statement in this one are of course the sleeves. I love how this piece is fundamentally quite a standard blouse but with these two important twists. One is these tier of subsequent ruffles that go down the sleeves from the elbow down and the other one is this beautiful gathering at the neckline. I think it would look absolutely stunning with maybe a colorful fabric or perhaps a stripey fabric as well. The high collar and the length of the sleeves also make this pattern super super whimsical and fairylike. I can imagine these ruffles floating around as you move and talk and justiculate as you do. The neckline is closed with a hook and eye. So you will learn how to install hook and eye and how to sew multiple ruffles together as well. The next pattern is the Ren shirt by Mood Society as well. These comes with two views, and I'm particularly interested in the view with bubble sleeves. As you can probably tell, I do love a bubble sleeve, and I find that it is a style detail that can really whimsify a top very easily. I love how the cuffs are positioned in these sleeves. You have one at the very top that creates sort of like a extra high shoulder effect and then you have one towards the bottom of the sleeve followed by a cuff as well. I think that is a very interesting combination of details. It is such a cool way to bring a normal office piece to whimsical enough without being too much for your 9 to5. With this one, of course, you will practice cuffing sleeves and sewing a button up with a collar and cuffs. Next is the carowway blouse by Mood Society.
Also a free pattern. And this one is all about drape and gathers and flowiness.
What caught my attention about this pattern is this beautiful detail of the neckline. The neckline is straight, but you have this beautiful detail of the shoulder panels coming forward and creating kind of like a geometric shape.
It also features very voluminous gathered sleeves with cuffs at the hem and the waist is cinched in with elastic as well creating a beautiful flare out effect. I would love to see this blouse with contrastive colors for the panels at the shoulder and the main bodice to really highlight these super cool design detail. The next blouse is a combination of patterns from what I understand and it is the tie blouse lantern sleeve peggy collar by puff and pencil. I think this one has such a cool combination of features. First of all, it is a tie blouse. It has these beautiful bows at the front. It has a maxi collar that comes to a lovely Vshape neckline and the sleeves don't gather right at the shoulder but rather a few inches above the elbow creating this interesting fitted then voluminous design. The gathered voluminous part of the sleeve is also cuffed at the wrist which adds to that bubble look of the sleeve. Something that I really love about this pattern is that the collar has these lovely ruffle which together with the bows and the gathers make this pattern really frilly and funky. It would be really fun to use different colors for the collar, the ruffle, the bows, and the voluminous part of the sleeve as well, and make it kind of like a patchwork, a super whimsical and colorful blouse. The next blouse is the Louisa blouse by Eta Design Co. This is all about gavis. It is a very voluminous blouse, quite oversized.
Something really cool about it is that it has drop shoulders and these two straight lines for the straps that tie it close with bows. This pattern is almost a mix between milkade and peasant in the best way possible. Of course, I love how voluminous and drapey it is, and it is definitely a statement piece.
Something also really cool about this blouse is that the sleeves are cuffed above the hem, creating this sort of flowy and roughly effect at the sleeve.
With this one, you will become a master at gathering, which is a great skill to have. Speaking of Peter Pan collars, the next pattern features one as well and it is the Peter Pan collar shirt by Unfeted Patterns. This is a free pattern. And it is a button-up shirt with a yolk, gathered shoulders, cuffed sleeves, and these beautiful Peter Pan collar that comes to a deep V- neckline.
This is another great pattern to bring a little bit of magic into your 9-to-f5 business outfits. The next pattern is the tie- neck shirt also by Unfeted Patterns. It is a free pattern and it is your standard button-up shirt but with a bow as main protagonist. I love the idea of a maxi bow at the front as focal point of the shirt. I think it makes it so much more playful and impactful and whimsical. All right, guys. The next one is not a blouse, not a shirt. It is none other than the Portoelloo halter top by Ginger Elina. This one is so different.
It has these stunning band under the bust that features these beautiful floral smoking that is handsewn. So with this one you will learn how to hand sew these phenomenal smoking motif. It really elevates these piece and makes it super fabesque would you say? Is that the term? evokes Greek goddess to me as well. I also like how much gathering is present in this pattern and I think it overall is a very beautiful whimsical summer piece. I find it so invaluable that with this pattern you get to learn such an ancient and beautiful skill that is smoking. Very very cool. Okay, it is time to move on to the biggest category of this video, which is dresses. The first dress pattern that I bring you is the Primrose dress. I am in love with the way that Gingerina has achieved the shaping under the bust and on the midsection. It is so clever. And I also really love that she has an option with two tiny really cute bows on the side as well as at the center of the bust. There are lots of really cool features in this pattern. The instructions include how to finish your raw edges with Hong Kong binding on the back seam. It features an invisible zipper. Lots of gathering at the bust to accentuate the bust outline.
And at the skirt, I love these corset inspired shaping of the midsection with sculptural waist pleats. This is a masterpiece, guys. And the techniques in this piece are super super cool. You can have these in the most plain fabric and still stand out as the most whimsical person in the room easily.
The next dress is the oversized collar dress by Kiana Bonolo. This one comes with two views. The view with the collar is advanced, so you do have something to work towards with this one. Um, and it is advanced because of the positioning of the zipper in combination with the collar. But you do have an intermediate version which is a sleeveless dress with a beautiful V neckline gathering under the bust and this beautiful style of skirt that comes to points um at the four corners of the skirt piece. The skirt detail, especially with these corners flapping around when you move, does add so much whimsicality to it. It gives me sort of like witchy vibes. It really whimsifies these piece and in combination with this beautiful fitted yolk underneath the bust makes it super flattering and very fairylike. The advanced view of this pattern comes also with bubble sleeves. So effectively, you could add bubble sleeves to your intermediate style to make it even more whimsical, adding a little bit of extra volume and perhaps a little frilly trim at the hem as well. The next dress is the puff bubble sleeve circle skirt dress by Daria pattern making. This is such a beautiful combination of volume gathers and flowiness. I love the amount of bubbles and cuffing at the sleeves and this beautiful milkade style bust together with a fitted yolk underneath and this frilly circle skirt with a gather at the bottom. I love how the gather is kind of wide and the raw edge is on the outside which adds a little bit extra style detail.
to this piece. This is as romantic and whimsical as a milkmaid style dress can go, I reckon. I think I'm very quickly developing an obsession for cuffed sleeves. The next dress is the Oilia dress by Thrills and Stitches. This dress has more of a simple but elegant silhouette. I think this pattern brings a very harmonious blend of simplicity, flowiness and whimsicality and it is very wearable whilst bringing a beautiful and subtle touch of magic into your outfit. And the last pattern for the dress category is the one and only Briea dress by patterns by Patnos.
I love this dress. It has these beautiful princess seams, bow straps, and it has this beautiful drop waist V waistline that is sewn together with a gathered skirt. This is kind of a difficult skill to master, but pattern by pattern co has a very detailed guideline and very detailed instructions on how to match a Vshape with gathers to perfection. Okay, onto the smallest category of today's video, which is skirts. Starting from Kiana Bonolo's gathered skirt. In particular, I'm looking at view A of this pattern, which features a double tiered gathered skirt, which adds so much volume and so much playfulness to this piece. I love how the top tier is not a straight tier, but rather it comes to a curve at the center and flows back down at the bottom to create these fluid feeling to the skirt.
Draws the attention to the center of your body and to me it sort of evokes flowy medieval gown vibes. I love the layering of tears and gathers. I think it makes this skirt super super enchanted.
The second and last skirt of today's video is the Canila skirt by Mood Society and it is a free pattern. It features a drop waist with a beautiful panled yolk and a voluminous circle skirt. Of course, when there's panels, there could be color blocking, which would add a patchwork feel to the skirt and make it even more whimsical and funky and playful. A very dramatic piece and a very flattering one as well with that fitted yolk at the top. Okay, onto the next category, which is jumpsuits.
The first jumpsuit isn't necessarily something that you would classify as whimsical, but it has lots of whimsification opportunities. And that is the Merit jumpsuit by Mood Society.
It is a free pattern with a zipper that goes all the way through the front of the bodice. It has lots of pockets that you could use to create a patchwork color blocking situation. And with this one, you can really unleash your creativity with top stitching, embroidery. So, if you are on the lookout for ways to whimsify your work wear, this is definitely for you. The next pattern is the open back jumpsuit by Unfeted Patterns. This is more of a playful and cutesy one. It features a maxi bow at the back, which I think would look really cool in a contrastive color. It has maxi pockets at the front, and it is not a fulllength pant, which means that you could easily add ruffles to make it even more freely. A very playful piece and a comfortable one as well because it has an elasticated back of the waistband. Next up, we have the Bobby overalls. I love the roundness of the barrel leg. Even the pockets have that roundness. Super cute and fun. And this is another great opportunity to whimsify your work wear. Great piece to learn some important skills as well. For example, installing hardware for the buttons to close the pants, sewing with denim, if you choose to make it with denim, and top stitching. I think overalls are per se a really fun and funky sort of garment, but I would love to see the Bobby overalls in a patchwork or with pockets of all different colors and textures. I have another overall piece that is super playful and all about channeling your inner child, and that is the Oliver jumpsuit by Mood Society. This is a free pattern and it is an oversized, really baggy and really playful jumpsuit that reminds me of something that a toddler would wear, which is super funny. It has some really cool features. For example, the buttons at the straps and at the pant closure.
V-shaped seam at the waist. gathering at the neckline and at the ankles and the ankles are also cuffed. Okay, it is time to move on to the next category which is pants. The first pants are the Arthur pants by So Liberated. Yes, they are borrow pants. However, they come with two views and they have some very interesting features. VA is a super rounded barrel leg pant with pleats where the pants are constituted by two panels sewn together with a flat felled seam if I'm not wrong. Vue 2 is very similar, but it includes an elasticated waistband and partial cuffing at the ankle with elastic. I love this piece because again it sort of funkifies your typical business pants. Blends your office wear with the super playfulness of these rounded shapes. Speaking of burrow leg pants, there is another burrow leg pant that I wanted to show you and that is the Madrron pants by So Liberated. And what I love about these pants is the amount of panels that they feature and also how how rounded these panels are. There are really infinite possibilities of customization with these panels and I think it looks super super cool with top stitching as well. I think the design style line of these panels rounding and coming to point as they do make these barrel leg pant super super playful, whimsical and different.
And I think it makes them really stand out from your classic burrow leg. I love how the ankle has these rounded cuff as well, which also brings a little bit more dynamicity to this piece. And the last pant pattern of today's video is the fragment shorts by Calonia Dreaming.
This pant is all about contrast and alternating panels. It has a very dramatic yolk and it features an exposed zipper as closure. If you do choose to use super contrastive colors, I think these pants give such an optical effect.
Not only really funky and playful, but also really flattering um creating this shaping visual effect through the panels and the yolk. Okay, it is time to get into the last category, which is accessories. The first accessory is none other than the duffel of love by Talia's thread store. I love this duffel bag. I have seen multiple heart-shaped bags before, but never a duffel bag. I find it super cute and fun and I love that it comes with the option to have it quilted for extra cuteness and it comes in three sizes. The next accessory that I bring you is the Elevens's backpack. I love how this backpack features so many pockets. Is super versatile and practical. And it features these beautiful sun at the center. Lots of straps, pockets, and zippers to be sewn in this one. And it is an excellent way to bring a little bit more magic and whimsicality to your outdoors or sporting activities. And we're going to finish off with a bang because the last pattern for accessories that I bring you is the Hillgate baguette bag by Ginger Elina. This baguette bag features the smoking that we have seen in the Portoelloo top. I am a huge fan of the smoking. It comes in three views.
Shoulder bag, clutch or toiletry and crossbody bag. A super romantic and extra detailed piece that you can use to bring sophistication and whimsicality to any outfit.
