[00:00:00]Almost nobody lives in this huge part of United States that stretches all the way from the north to the south of the country. If you look at the nighttime map of America, you'll notice lots of bright cities in the east and fewer cities in the west. But right in between, there is this massive area that looks surprisingly empty. So why don't more people live here? There are three main reasons. First, this region falls in the rain shadow region created by the Rocky Mountains. Because of that, many places here only get one/ird of the rainfall that east coast gets. Second, most of this area is at a higher elevation. That means the weather can change very quickly and temperature swings of even 20° C in a single day is very common here. And thirdly, natural resources here are very low. While cities like Denver grew because of the nearby gold discoveries, most of this region is made up of open plains that are best suited for small villages but not large cities. And that's why this region is often called America's empty belt.
