The ivory tower’s monopoly on intelligence is over now that a $400 laptop can bypass the very "safety" constraints the elite spent years building. The "frontier" is no longer a luxury, but a budget commodity that doesn't require anyone's permission.

Frontier AI runs fully offline on a $400 laptop #OpenSourceAI追加:
A laptop that cost about $400, no internet connection, and running on it fully offline, a model that's as capable as many of the ones that the biggest labs charge you to rent for many tasks.
The big proprietary labs like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI, they pay legions of workers to teach that reflex, when to decline. And there's a whole parallel category of models that carries no such reflex at all. There is a technique called obliteration, which is not new, that's been around for a while.
It tweaks a model's published weights and surgically removes its capacity to refuse anything. What's new, though, is there's an automated tool called Heretic that does it from two lines of instruction in just a few minutes.
Hugging Face now lists more than 6,000.
In 2024, it was just around 600. Red teamers have documented that these stripped models can answer for explosives, for meth synthesis, for attack planning with no hesitation. But the alarm is hiding the bigger thing.
For almost the entire history of computing, real capability lived behind walls that only well-funded institutions could even afford to operate. The whole containment setup that the labs built rested on one very specific assumption.
Once the weights run on your own machine, answerable to no platform, that assumption stops holding. The arrangement that is cracking here, where a handful of companies decide what billions of people could and could not ask, that was scarcity engineered into the interface in a manufactured scarcity economy. It reads as scary because change this big always does. But the thing being handed out for free is intelligence itself. This is arguably the single greatest equalizing force in human history. And what it threatens is none more than the status quo. Now, there's a longer treatment of where this might lead in today's Century Report. Go check it out.
