Employers have a legal obligation to provide a safe workplace and must take appropriate action when harassment occurs; failure to do so can result in significant financial liability, as demonstrated by a New Zealand case where a recruitment company was ordered to pay $20,000 after its Employment Relations Authority found it failed to address harassment complaints from an employee.

Recruitment worker harassed by candidate wins $20k ERA payout #nzcourtsAdded:
A former account manager has won $20,000 after the Employment Relations Authority found Remarkable People Limited failed to provide a safe workplace resulting in her resignation. Mediana Kennedy resigned after being harassed by a colleague with late-night calls, emails, texts, and unannounced office visits.
One email called her a hot boss, and when she raised the issue with management, he text her calling her a narc. Despite the woman feeling so unsafe she had to lock her office door, management said they did not have legal grounds to take disciplinary action.
When Kennedy advised management she would only feel safe if she could work from home, she was told she could call it a day.
Remarkable People said they could not know how serious the matter was because Kennedy failed to notify all of her concerns. You can read more about the story at the link here.
