Successful artists often need to strategically adapt their music and presentation to connect with international audiences while maintaining their cultural identity, as demonstrated by Black Coffee's approach of modifying his sound and using English vocal elements to expand Afro House globally, which contrasts with criticism that other artists like DJ Maphorisa should not attempt similar adaptations.

DJ Maphorisa Has Completely Lost Control of This Situation!Hinzugefügt:
I mean the DJ Mapisa situation at this point is quite honestly embarrassing because this guy and not have been going back and forth for the longest time.
When you give the mic to Bori, you're not going to get any sense. I said that even in his response, he's like, "Yo, I don't know English, dog. English is the language of business for most of the world. Learn English. It's very important. Chinese people learn English.
China's got the biggest economy in the world. They pay South Africans to teach their kids English." Do you understand what I'm saying? That's how important English is. Learn English so you know how to read. So you don't have to trust that guy that works for the company that's screwing you over, that's helping you screw over all the artists. They're going to call you [ __ ] names in 5 years, in 2 years, in 3 years. Where you don't have to show people, I paid people 8 million.
I made millionaires. I've made millionaires.
Million. So we will remember Gabza as well as Black Coffee are currently in Ibiza recording some type of documentary about South African music and pretty much taking Amapiano to the entire world. There would be many tweets. There would be many comments talking about one thing and one thing only and that's the fact that DJ Mapisa can't speak English.
>> Do you guys feel like you're a part of music history?
>> Yeah, I love it. Oh, we really are part of it's just that we don't like it's something that you know it's it's it comes weird when we say it.
>> Yeah. So, yeah. Like really holding it down to the dense density.
One of the themes we've been looking at.
>> I mean, it wasn't really only about the English side of DJ Mapiso, but these guys were getting cooked left to right and center, especially on Twitter. One comment by Chris Excel would say, "It looks like the crowd in London can see that they are being scammed." Referring to the set um and Gabza were playing.
[music] [music] It would only get worse with another comment saying, "Since when does Py and Gabza play this kind of sound? [music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> And another interesting comment would say, "Gabza and Mapisa were not supposed to copy Black Coffee on these international gigs. They were supposed to introduce the world to their original craft and type of music that they known for, gaining 7,000 likes and over 500,000 views. I the flaming wouldn't stop around their gig saying that Ibiza gig just confirmed that Amapiano has fallen off.
>> Bro, the thing is when you're being called by black or whatever, right, saying come to IA is because he sees he recognizes what you're really after.
>> Don't come now and try to do what I've been doing.
>> Yes.
>> Why, bro? I didn't call you for that.
>> I called you for you.
>> [ __ ] it, my [ __ ] >> I think we've learned, >> bro. You you you get booked for gigs.
>> Yeah.
>> What do they want?
>> UH SALT. YOU WANT THE SALT? RIGHT. So now I'm a promoter. I book you to come to a gig >> and then you play every like so what are you doing bro?
>> Come there for sure.
>> I think it was bad timing right because here they are selling the biggest >> Amabiano event of all time.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Which is now in September.
>> Yeah.
>> They're telling us we must come there >> for sure. And they are the leaders, >> the headliners, >> the forefront, and we're rallying behind them. We bought the tickets. It's now sold out because we want them to win.
>> That's right. When is the gig?
>> September.
>> Okay.
>> Right. So then now for you to then go to another country and not carry that same energy.
>> It's like, okay, that's a bit confusing.
For example, I'm here every single Monday, Thursday saying, guys, please buy Chil Punch.
>> That's right.
>> And then you see me on another podcast and I'm drinking Savannah.
>> Yeah. That's like what are we supporting?
>> What's going on here? You understand what I'm saying? And every export that South Africa has had been consistent.
>> Whereas Trevor Noel, he did comedy here.
He went there, did comedy.
>> He didn't go there and be like trying to be a Hollywood. No, let me finish. Let me land.
>> Okay, I'll land after you.
>> Black coffee. He came here. He did house music. He went there. He did house. It's a different sound. Wait, it's a different sound.
>> But it's still house.
>> It's still house. It's still comedy.
>> It's still comedy, >> but the content changes a bit. to the content content is true. You understand Tyler? But he's never said no to South Africa. You understand? He still speaks about South Africa. He still speaks as though he lives right here, right now.
>> Throughout the time he was in the Americas. That's why we love wave our flag. Also adapt to the world. But our flag but interestingly, so would seem to come to the rescue and provide some commentary regarding this entire situation. And people pretty much criticizing Okabs and Omarapuris are saying, "Are you aware that Black Coffee himself adjusted his sound to where he is?" And he also said it, "I'm just happy that he is shining the spotlight back home. He broke into the market with English vocal songs and it was deliberate even how DJs changed and they toned down on effects so that he could appeal and connect to the larger market.
It's called growth. Go watch his interviews." But here you are saying good to these guys can't try out a different approach. You see these guys have been playing piano abroad. But it mainly connected with the African diaspora and not the rest of the world.
You can only change the game from within and coffee is proving that he is one of the reasons that Afro House is so massive at the moment and the world is paying attention to what South Africa is producing in that space. I mean, we obviously can't understate Black Coffey's influence in the larger market, but obviously OJ Maurisa wouldn't be trending for that only because on one of Drake's recent albums, he would release a song called Shebang that DJ Maisa would create a dance to that would quickly go viral on social media.
>> Manish on the beach. All of my ops, they dead. Why do they gas me up? Where does it go? My head, mama. How much? I got a lot. Don't leave again. I won't on the beat. Shabbang. All of my ops they dead.
Why do they gas me up? Where does it go?
My head.
>> How much? I got a lot. Don't leave again. I won't.
>> I get because now my prod's name are being mentioned in one conversation. He would be dancing this dance and milking all the attention he can get from this trend.
Jati People are saying with okay enough is enough because any chance which I can get he's milking this dance trend but one person would have an interesting comment regarding this entire trend thing. The crazy part about this whole map thing is that the guy who made the original edit of the dance with the song isn't even getting any credit gaining 6.4,000 likes. But okay, many people think, oh, this thing between Unote and UJ Mapisa recently started a few months ago. But these guys have been at each other's throats for the longest time. In fact, it was so bad even said that Uno wasn't even allowed at a Scorpion Kings event.
I can [laughter] I believe the security is not allowed.
[laughter] >> [laughter] >> And now it seems like Unoto is coming after Udijisa and him trying to fill up the FNB stadium.
>> Now this is my issue with this thing.
It's stupid. [music] You go to Muben Jalo. You go to you've got Piano Hub.
You performing every week. You are at every Tom Dick and Harry's gig. You are performing. And then you want to fill up FNB, dog.
>> Like like come on. Take us seriously, dog. You want us to buy tickets to see SOMETHING WE SEE?
DAY WITHOUT ME EVEN TRYING. Like one time I was trying to sneak out. Like I was really trying to sneak out. You know what I mean? I was trying to sneak out.
I got some new girls that I was rolling with. I was like, "Yo, let me go out."
You know, one of them had just turned 20. [music] You know what I mean? It was her birthday. I was like, "Yo, let me take >> Yeah. Even the young ones for real.
They're old enough." [laughter] >> So, you know, I went to Mubaru without even knowing it. My prod was there. Just imagine a young 20-year-old on a random night gets taken from Tempo cuz that's where I found those girls. I met them at tempo, you know? They were like, "Yeah, we trying to go to Mubalo." You know? I go to Jalo. I see Bori. I see Uncle MC.
I see the whole entire piano hub, New Money Gang lineup, VIP section. Deon go set. I just played before that. You understand what I'm saying? I didn't even pay a cent to get in there. You understand what I'm saying? I didn't even pay. I don't know how much Hennessy is. I think it was like 800 something.
Huh?
>> I don't know, dog.
>> Can't remember how much my bill was. You understand what I'm saying? But what I'm trying to say is that I wasn't trying to see the top acts in the country on that night. And I told Bori this personally. I DM'd him. I'm like, "Dog, you should be chasing Madison Square Garden next. You can't let coffee do Madison Square Garden and you are not the next guy to follow it up. It's a competitive sport. Every hotel you go into anywhere in the world, the lobby music is black coffee. Modisa is not on that same level. M but when it comes to hit music in South Africa there's no way coffee is seeing him or touching him.
He's not seeing him or touching him. So what does he need to do? He needs to show us him elevating beyond our borders. Madison Square Garden is a perfect playground to do that. He doesn't do that. He's too scared to do that. What does he do? He does FNB to chase who? Casper's shadow. Hey, whether or not it's about whether people can talk English or whether some people can fill up the F&B stadium while others are banned from that stadium, it seems like Amabiano is having some sort of a resurgence not only in South Africa but also in the world. But one thing I actually will commend is Black Coffee pretty much putting South Africans on the map as well. But I think if there's one thing we can take away from all this discourse is the fact that Black Coffee is doing what so many people fail to do which is put people from their own countries on the global stage. There's no question which if Black Coffee is an influence now all over the world in terms of his house music and the fact that he's still shining the spotlight back on South Africa is I think one thing we can take away from all of this drama. But DJ, it seems like people are really really complaining about the fact that you don't know how to speak English. But look, I mean, the guy's got the money.
I'm sure he can get an English tutor who teaches him on the side. But let me know what you think about all this drama in the comments section below. No, but there's something weird happening in Amapiano. Whether it's orang and I scratch your back, you scratch my back and my poresa and their awkward interviews. It seems like we're always entertained in this country.
