[00:00:00]Hello everyone and welcome to this month's session gas and fuel injection training. Today we're going to talk about a fuel injectors, how they how they function, how they work and some sales and training tips.

[00:00:14]My name is Shawn. I am a sales and training instructor here at SMP.

[00:00:19]Let's get right into it.

[00:00:22]Okay, before we get into our until we get before we get into the meat and potatoes of this, we're going to talk a little bit about the 2026 training schedule.

[00:00:31]So if you've missed any of the previous classes that you that you can see in red, go ahead and scan that QR code and you won't miss any coming up. You can register for all the ones we have coming up in the future and these are particularly for our outside sales people, parts professionals. We typically talk about how the sessions work, the items the related items, some sales tips and then we'll give you some additional sales support materials also.

[00:01:02]Okay, so in this session we're going to talk a little bit about the different fuel injection systems, the two main systems we use on on the modern automobiles we see on the road today, why the fuel injectors fail, we'll give you some technical and sales tips and we'll talk about some so-called remanufactured we'll talk about some remanufactured injectors and what those look like.

[00:01:26]And then we'll talk a little bit about the competitive landscape.

[00:01:29]We'll we'll go into deep dive into fuel injector testing and then we'll do some sales support also.

[00:01:39]Okay, so what do fuel injectors affect?

[00:01:42]We get this question a lot and you know, we see engine performance as our first, you know, what do you feel injectors affect? And when people see engine performance a lot of time a lot of times they think race car, right? Well, that's not what we're talking about here. What we're talking about is engine performance, how well the engine performs, and we're talking about factory and or manufacturer specifications. All right, how well is it start, run, and drive down the road?

[00:02:07]Um and the biggest thing when we have, you know, injectors that are failing or going bad is we get poor fuel atomization, which basically means how well the fuel integrates with the air because I'm sure we've all heard of an air-fuel mixture. So, that's what actually burns. So, what we do is we shoot a little bit of fuel into the combustion chamber, like where the piston is.

[00:02:28]Um and then that needs to atomize with the with the air, uh and then we can burn that. So, if it doesn't do the uh the atomization properly because it's either restricted or allowing too much fuel to flow, it can reduce the engine's performance and big time affect the drivability.

[00:02:44]Um also, um one of the ways injectors uh fuel injectors affect our vehicle is by fuel mileage. Um as we know, you know, gas prices keep rising and rising and rising. Um if we get incorrect fuel rates, we can reduce the mileage by sending way too much fuel into the system um into that combustion chamber, um which can cause um you know, a myriad of different problems.

[00:03:07]Um one of which is engine reliability.

[00:03:10]Um if we have too much fuel flowing or we have a wide spray pattern or, you know, even a um um a small spray pattern, what we can do uh or what happens is is with that wide spray pattern, it actually washes down the walls. Um and there needs to be oil on the walls of the cylinder.

[00:03:29]Um because that's really what creates the compression is the oil on the the cylinder walls, of course, the piston uh rings also. But, if we have too wide a spray pattern, it washes down those walls and and then creates um issues with compression.

[00:03:45]Uh same thing for emissions, you know, if our fuel injectors aren't flowing correctly, either too little or too much fuel.

[00:03:53]We can get unburnt fuel sent down through that emission system which overheats that catalytic converter and causes catastrophic damage. So, we end up having to replace catalytic converter converters way before they are actually meant to be replaced.

[00:04:11]Okay, so there's a few different gas fuel injection types. So, the two main types are on the road today is the multi-port fuel injection. We see that on the left of our screen. It as you can see the injector is actually a port injection, which means that it's in the it's in line for the intake air. So, air comes into the engine through the air filter and then it goes through the snorkel and it goes through the intake manifold and then it goes down into the the combustion chamber via the intake route. So, that's what you're seeing there. You're seeing the animation of the port injector shooting fuel right on the back of that intake valve and then it enters the combustion chamber after it mixes with that air.

[00:04:53]So, lower pressure is pulse width controlled. So, basically the ECM or PCM is, you know, telling it when to come on and come off.

[00:05:03]And then, more recently, in most of the, you know, newer cars on the road, we have gasoline direct injection or GDI.

[00:05:12]And that basically it's it says what it does in the name, right? That means gasoline is directly injected into the combustion chamber there. So, you see on this one it's actually bypassing that intake valve and intake system all together. It doesn't mix with air until it's actually inside of that combustion chamber. Now, on this one, much higher pressure up to about 2,000 PSI and it's it's pressure controlled. So, depending on how much of fuel it wants is how how high that pressure is.

[00:05:41]And then, [clears throat] as we can tell, as we know, Um, because we have so much pressure in there, we have to make sure that the injector is or the injector is actually pressed into the cylinder head. So, it's not just an O-ring, it's actually pressed into that cylinder head.

[00:05:57]So, with our GDI high-pressure system that we're seeing on most cars, we have a few different things going on. So, the first thing is we have the delivery pump that's inside the tank. So, this is our low-pressure um low-pressure tank or low-pressure fuel pump in the tank that sends fuel up to the high-pressure GDI pump. And that's what steps it up to that 2,000 PSI.

[00:06:21]So, the GDI pump is actually located um in the cylinder head or all bolted onto the cylinder head and it's directly on top of that um that camshaft. So, you see on the picture on the right side, you see um the GDI uh high-pressure fuel pump driven off the camshaft lobe. So, you see as it turns, it pushes that um it pushes that pump or pressurizes that pump um as it's uh as the the lobe is spinning.

[00:06:49]Okay, so many modern vehicles um and as you can see on the the Ford um the 2023 to 2028 uh 5.0 on the Mustangs and on the F-150s, we actually have two part numbers for fuel injectors. And that's because this system actually utilizes both of the systems we just talked about. It has the MFI and it has the GDI injectors on it. So, when you guys are selling these um at the counter, make sure that we're clarifying which injector we need when um when you're when the customer comes in asking about them. So, this technology is used on Audi, Ford, Subaru, um and Toyotas.

[00:07:29]And some vehicles can have up to 16 injectors because there's two for each cylinder.

[00:07:34]Um a lot of times, this also can help reduce the carbon deposits um that are super common on GDI engines.

[00:07:47]Okay, so why do fuel injectors fail is the is the biggest question. You know, a lot of times where when we're selling these parts customers have those questions of of why do they fail and and what are we doing about it? Um so the biggest thing we see in modern vehicles is we we know we have um heat and vibration. So those are the two biggest things that are causing electrical problems on our modern automobiles. So um repeated heat cycles and vibration causing those internal electronic failures um on these injectors. And then we also get contaminated fuel. Um and this could be contamination from dirt, debris, low-quality fuel.

[00:08:28]Um the injector itself could be clogged or partially clogged affecting performance. And you see in the visual here, we have some injectors that are spraying quite well and some that are not spraying at all. And the PCM actually has a hard time differentiating on on which one is which. And we'll get into that in a couple slides.

[00:08:47]Also, as we know um it's super common, we have, you know, a ton of TSVs out there um that manufacturers have sent out about carbon build-up on the tips of their injectors um for the for GDI specifically. So carbon carbon deposits form on that injector um and it it doesn't allow it to atomize fuel properly. So like we see in this um uh visual here where it's not spraying like it's supposed to.

[00:09:12]Um and then finally we get to the leaking injector, which we, you know, is all too common. And this picture is actually an injector that um is is was leaking to the cylinder, which can cause, again, multiple problems. One of the problems it can cause is what we're talking about uh fuel actually cleaning the cylinder walls of that that all too important oil.

[00:09:31]But also a leaking injector can can cause an engine to hydro locked, which means that it it won't allow um the piston to, you know, go into the compression stroke. So, we can cause leaking injectors can cause catastrophic engine failure.

[00:09:44]Um and really just it's failed failed seals calling causing too much fuel to enter that combustion chamber.

[00:09:54]Okay. So, now on to when fuel injectors become contaminated, what's actually happening in the engine? What is the ECU trying to do? Um so, if you see on the graphic here on the left, we have fuel delivery um with the blue, and then we have air delivery in the yellow. So, as we notice, we have one of the fuel delivery um one of the cylinders is not getting any fuel. So, what does that mean? Um so, what's what is happening? What is the ECU doing? Well, the ECU is trying to make adjustments for that. So, we have what we call a air-fuel mixture, and the um the oxygen sensor is really just measuring how much uh air-fuel mixture is coming uh coming into it. And if we have one cylinder not working, then that ratio is going to be off. We call it a air-fuel ratio or stoichiometric.

[00:10:44]Um so, if that ratio is off, what the ECU is going to do is going to try to add more fuel. We've heard of short-term and long-term fuel trims. It's going to add try to add more fuel. It's going to try to take away fuel to make that um adjustment right to get the perfect air-fuel ratio.

[00:11:00]So, it can't it can't do it for individual cylinders or individual injectors. It can only do it for banks.

[00:11:06]So, banks like bank one or bank two for each side of the engine. So, the side of the engine that's having a problem, it's going to try to add more fuel, right?

[00:11:13]So, it can only add more fuel on the three other injectors. So, it really try kind of tries to struggle, or the engine really struggles to run, and it has, you know, low engine performance here.

[00:11:23]So, um what happens is is when we go to replace that one injector, say we put a a a new injector in that spot. So now like we kind of talked about earlier, right? Um dirty or contaminated um or injectors flowing or not flowing as well. We put a brand new injector in that spot. Well, now that one injector is nice, clean, and it's operating like brand new, and it's shooting a bunch of fuel down like it's supposed to, but the other three aren't able to do that because they're contaminated, right?

[00:11:54]They're kind of dirty. They're they're worn a little bit. They're not able to atomize the fuel as efficiently. So now we have a lot of fuel on one cylinder and not as much on the other. So the ECU still trying to make those adjustments.

[00:12:06]So that's why we say we want to, you know, replace these in pairs uh or in sets and to just to make sure cuz you know, if we have one injector on there that's failed, we have eight other injectors that have been on there same amount of time, same amount of mileage.

[00:12:21]So when we're talking to our customers, you know, we want to make sure that we're we're giving them all those tech tips and and you know, so they're not doing the job, you know, over and over again.

[00:12:30]Uh also, when we talk about low-cost injectors, so say we put a low-cost injector in that spot. Well, we can have, you know, a couple things happen. One, we can have not enough fuel going down there.

[00:12:43]Um now it the ECU still trying to adjust, trying to adjust, and it can never get it right. Um or it allows too much fuel, and the same thing but opposite happens. The ECU's trying to make it adjust, and then it's not allowing um it's not allowing it to run properly because it's either getting too much fuel or not enough fuel, which as we know can cause catastrophic engine damage and you know, damage to the um emissions components like the catalytic converter.

[00:13:11]So, working well enough might not um work So even that even though that injector's working well enough, you know, it may not cause the check engine light to come on, but it's probably going to run rough or it can cause that catalytic converter to have issues also.

[00:13:28]Okay. So we kind of already touched on this a little bit. Um but um you know, from our pro training team, we have a tech tip. So, they definitely recommend replacing injectors um in sets. Um and really, you know, why did that one injector fail, right? It failed internally electronically. Okay, great.

[00:13:46]But, we have, you know, five other or um or seven other injectors that have been doing the same thing for the same amount of time.

[00:13:55]And uh um you know, they could be contaminated or they're not allowing enough, you know, fuel to flow. So, that replacing that one injector, again, may cause that check engine light to go off, but it's never really going to run right cuz the ECUs really trying to make adjustments and it it just can't keep up or just can't do it. So, replace We want to make sure that we're telling our customers replace all the injectors at the same time. And honestly, you guys are um your your customers are already there, right? They're already replacing, you know, one bank um or they're replacing, you know, one in one. Might as well replace them all. Save yourself um save themselves some time and and labor.

[00:14:38]Okay. Another tech tip. Um most of these GDI components are one-time use only. Um we definitely recommend uh replacing the high-pressure fuel lines, um the fuel rails, and the cam follower. So, let's talk about why. So, when when technicians go to remove these high-pressure fuel rails, a lot of times they stick a pry bar under there and they'll pry it up. And these things are made out of, you know, um made out of aluminum for the most part. So, it'll flex or it'll bend. Um and, you know, that that causes it not to seal properly. So, um that's why we recommend replacing that. And even on that the fuel lines, you see that the little yellow tag on there? There's actually a little trash can symbol on it. Um and those are one-time use components. So, even if say even say we're not replacing injectors or we're not replacing this line, a lot of times if say we're doing a head gasket or or intake manifold gaskets, a lot of times we have to replace we have to pull these components off in order to get to that job. And and knowing we have to uh replace these components cuz they're they're one-time use only.

[00:15:47]Okay.

[00:15:48]Um, final uh pro uh training tech tip is a lot of times our our GDI injectors may require more information than just year, make, and model, right? So, we want to make sure we're grabbing those VINs. Um, and a lot of times, like on this uh Toyota um injector here, you see that it's circled in red and has a number two on there. Well, these Toyota injectors, you know, may have a one, two, three, four on it, um, but we need to make sure like have that have your customer bring that injector in there with them so we can make sure that we're identifying um the proper one that we're putting in there cuz there's there could be many. So, on the 2022 GM 5.3, for example, there are multiple different options, and on this one, you know, if you look at those uh notes down there, it has a they have numbers written on them. So, we need to make sure that we're getting the proper fuel injector for that engine um uh for that engine code. And a lot of times, the way to do it is confirming by VIN or by pulling the uh injector itself and looking on the body of that injector. So, we can make sure we match it up and and we're giving our customers the right um the right parts the the first time.

[00:17:03]All right, and now we'll kick it over to Jake on our product team.

[00:17:10]>> Thank you, Sean. My name is Jake. I'm the product manager for SMP's uh fuel injection line.

[00:17:16]Um, so we'll start with uh this slide.

[00:17:19]Uh you're going to hear us talk a lot today about how S&P's fuel injection line uh consists of new injectors.

[00:17:26]Um, so that's the alternative obviously to remanufactured injectors. And the thing about reman injectors is they're kind of a misnomer in the sense that they're not fully uh remanufactured from new components. And really what they should be called is like cleaned injectors or refreshed injectors because it's still the same part that was initially installed on the car. Um, it's just taken apart, it's flushed out, um but it still contains those old the original electronic components. It still contains the the same mechanical components. Um it still has all of the wear and tear from the heat cycles, um you know, from being on the car and just the the vibration and all of that.

[00:18:12]Um, so so this part is not going to last as long on a vehicle as a new injector would.

[00:18:22]Next slide, please.

[00:18:27]So, uh I'm going to talk a little bit about our fuel injection line and what your customers are getting when they choose standard. So, we have 15 research and development centers around the world helping to identify new parts.

[00:18:39]Uh we also have 21 manufacturing facilities and the main one uh that is important to today's presentation is our facility in Greenville, South Carolina, which specializes in fuel injection and manufacturing injectors.

[00:18:52]Uh all of our injectors are thoroughly tested to match OEM performance on flow rate, spray pattern, and more. I'm going to talk a little bit more about the testing uh on a later slide.

[00:19:02]Uh we also provide a wealth of training videos and other resources to you guys, our sales teams, uh to make sure everyone's well informed on the benefits of stocking standard brand parts.

[00:19:17]So, let's start at the very beginning.

[00:19:18]You have a customer who needs to replace their fuel injectors, and you're explaining their options to them. They can go with the lowest cost part, but really they're getting what they pay for there. You know, that's not There's not going to be very much research and quality control going into that part.

[00:19:34]So, it's very likely to have poor or inconsistent performance, and that is definitely eventually going to lead to more expensive problems later on down the road.

[00:19:45]Remanufactured injectors are also an option, but like I was saying on that earlier slide, not actually remanufactured. You know, these are cleaned parts. They still have the same internal and electronic components that have been subjected to that wear and tear on the vehicle. So, you're getting a reduced lifespan versus a new replacement part.

[00:20:08]Or you can recommend your customer to go with Standard. Our injectors are 100% new, thoroughly tested, and designed specifically to match OEM specifications.

[00:20:17]We also have a complete line, several complete lines of support parts for your vehicle's fuel systems.

[00:20:24]What do I mean by that? I'll talk about a little bit on this next slide.

[00:20:31]So, Standard has the most extensive fuel injection program in the automotive aftermarket, and that's not just our fuel injectors. We carry all of the lines shown here. These are parts that very often, kind of like Shawn was saying, need to be replaced in tandem with your fuel injectors. You can see those fuel feed lines, these service kits, which will include all the seals, gaskets, clips that you need for a given application. If you're replacing all the injectors, we do offer service kits that, you know, include everything that you'll need for that.

[00:21:01]Also, these GDI high-pressure fuel pumps, fuel pressure sensors. I'm I'm to talk a little bit about these on a later slide. But this just goes to show that uh we really do have all of the fuel injection-related parts for a complete repair that your customers can trust.

[00:21:20]So this is a graph of the different types of injectors used on production vehicles over time and you can see this first bar 1980 95% of vehicles produced that year had throttle body injection only 5% were equipped with MFI injectors.

[00:21:36]And you can kind of see with this graph how that changes over time and closer to the 90s 2000s we really moved to where MFI injectors were the dominant technology on new production vehicles.

[00:21:48]And again you can see in later years early 2000s to current most vehicles produced nowadays have either GDI or GDI and MFI injection.

[00:21:59]So this kind of just goes to show the evolution of the technologies used on new production vehicles and how the industry has shifted from primarily using throttle body injection to MFI and then GDI injection.

[00:22:12]And as the market has evolved with these new technologies Standard has had to work hard to evolve as well building new lines and developing new skews to keep up with market demands. And over time ending up with a catalog that contains over 1,000 new fuel injector skews which cover over 98% of the vehicles in operation in the US.

[00:22:35]SMP is the industry leader in both total injector coverage and new injector coverage. So this is important because like I was talking about earlier those those remanufactured injectors you're not getting a new part to put on your vehicle. You're getting a part that has seen wear and tear on a vehicle and it's just been cleaned out and you're going to reinstall it. And you can see from this chart the number of skews that we offer and these are all new. We only offer new gas injection skews.

[00:23:04]While some of our competitors are still splitting up their offerings between new and reman or even prioritizing reman entirely, SMP proudly offers more new injector skews than anybody else out there in the market.

[00:23:20]So, I'm going to dig a little bit into our MFA MFI program. Uh for now, SMP offers over 800 new MFI injectors.

[00:23:28]Um and if you recall that graph of the different injection types over time, that big red section in the middle was MFI injectors. And so, what you can kind of glean from that is that, you know, if you go back to every vehicle made from 1980 to now, um the majority of cars on the road are going to be equipped with MFI injectors.

[00:23:49]Um so, this is our largest injector section of our catalog right now. And that's mainly because there are so many, you know, different OEM injectors that we have had to cover uh the applications for.

[00:24:01]So, MFI injectors are, you know, the the like I said, the bulk of our injectors, but we do lead the industry uh in total offerings and uh catalog coverage for MFI injection.

[00:24:17]I want to take a second to highlight the metering discs on our MFI injectors.

[00:24:21]Uh at a glance, your customers may not understand the significance of this component, but it genuinely might be the single most important component of an MFI injector, and I'll explain why.

[00:24:32]So, the the little holes in this disc that the fuel actually flows through into your cylinders, um those holes have to exactly match the OEM uh injectors for precise performance and flow rate.

[00:24:46]Uh this is why SMP designs each metering disc to precisely match the OEM part for each application. And we use a high-tech laser to drill the holes as precisely as possible for an injector that performs just as it should in accordance with the OEM part.

[00:25:06]Um so I'm sure you all know and like Shawn touched on a little bit earlier, clogging is a very common failure for fuel injectors. Uh with these tiny, but in Standard's case precisely designed and laser drilled holes in the metering disc, that debris can build up over time and cause your injectors to run poorly.

[00:25:24]Um this is why it's common to recommend replacing injectors in sets because if one of them is clogged or has enough debris to fail or affect the flow rate of the injector, then there's a pretty good chance that the other injectors are not far behind it. Uh and like Shawn was saying, you know, it's it can be hard to tell like the the uh exact state of each injector without, you know, one throwing a code. So, uh that's really going to be, you know, a powerful recommendation to your customers. If they have to replace one fuel injector, um they might as well go ahead and do the rest while they're on it now.

[00:26:01]Um just to make sure keep your customer's vehicles healthy long-term. Uh that's going to be the best uh course of action. So, we currently offer 20 multi-packs of fuel injectors. Um and these cover 31 million vehicles that are on the road in the US.

[00:26:18]Um as an added bonus, each one of these multi-packs is going to be one line item on an invoice versus 4 to 8 individual injectors. Uh this will make it harder for your customers to try and pick apart the estimate or invoice and ask questions like, "What are these extra parts? Do I really need them?" You know, we know the answer is yes, you really do. It's going to be the best course of action for your repair, but it's going to make it easier on everybody just to say, "Here, one pack of injectors.

[00:26:45]That's how many you need for your vehicle. Let's go with that." and move on.

[00:26:52]So, this slide serves to show you some up-and-coming parts in our MFI line that I really think that everyone should kind of be [snorts] aware of because these are parts that are not necessarily newly added to our line, but these are parts that we have been kind of keeping an eye on the demand for and the sales figures. Some of these parts we've, you know, the OEM has [snorts] continued using them on vehicles as they go through production years. So, we've been keeping track of that, adding coverage applications to them.

[00:27:25]So, they might cover more VIOs than they did when they were initially released, but whether it's that or, you know, just the service life cycle of these applications, we've noticed that these parts are really increasing in demand and um parts that we're expecting to see some some really healthy sales for in the coming years. So, I would make yourself kind of aware of these numbers and be able to communicate to your customers about them and and, you know, make sure that your your store is is ready to have these available for your customers.

[00:28:03]Okay, so moving on now, I'm going to talk a little bit about our GDI injection program.

[00:28:08]This slide serves to sort of again highlight the extent of our offerings for GDI systems. It's not just about injectors, but it's also about all the parts that you need to, you know, support your vehicle with that the fuel system.

[00:28:23]I also want to touch on, you know, these these little yellow tags like Shawn was talking about. These are going to indicate that the the OE manufacturer recommends that anytime this is removed or removed in the vehicle, you need to replace that part. They're one-time use only. That's what they're designed for, which is why we have a pretty extensive line of fuel feed lines.

[00:28:47]we've also got high pressure fuel pumps, fuel pressure sensors, I'll talk about those in a little bit as well, um as well as the seal and service kits and camshaft followers.

[00:28:57]We really do have a full lineup of parts here to keep your GDI fuel system healthy and and running strongly.

[00:29:10]So, just like with MFI injectors, SMP leads the aftermarket in GDI injector coverage with almost 200 new GDI injector SKUs.

[00:29:19]Um you know, like I was saying that MFI section is going to be the bulk of our catalog right now, but because this is an evolving technology, this is something that is being used more and more every year on production vehicles.

[00:29:31]Uh we are working very hard to stay ahead in this this uh in the aftermarket industry in this category and make sure that we have really healthy, industry-leading coverage for this category as well.

[00:29:45]So, this is another stocking guide for GDI injectors.

[00:29:49]Um with these parts, these really are the strongest injectors in the category and you can look at the VIO here, um but really it's just about sales numbers as well. Um these these injectors cover a lot of vehicles, there's a lot of demand for them. Uh many of them are kind of at the the very strong points uh in the replacement cycle for these applications. So, these are these are numbers that I would familiarize yourself with and again, uh be ready to talk to your customers about these replacement parts and make sure your stores have them in stock or at least, you know, are aware of them because you're going to be seeing demand for these uh now and in the future.

[00:30:32]Okay, so I talked about how the market has evolved from TBI to MFI to GDI injectors and there's kind of these new technologies are emerging, but in addition um GDI injectors bring with them a lot of other components that we thought were important to add to our catalog to ensure that your customers can keep their fuel systems healthy.

[00:30:55]For example, looking at this diagram of a GDI system, you can see two fuel pumps and two pressure sensors, which is very common for these systems.

[00:31:04]Um so we have a line of GDI high-pressure fuel pumps with over 120 SKUs.

[00:31:09]All of these are 100% new, not remanufactured uh with stainless steel internal components. So these are, you know, very thoroughly tested just like our injectors to make sure that they are matching OEM specs on fuel pressure, fuel flow, all of that. Um this is just another product line that we have along with our GDI injectors to keep your customers' vehicles uh on the road.

[00:31:34]And these GDI fuel pressure sensors, so many of these systems have a low pressure sensor between the fuel tank and the high pressure pump, and then another high pressure sensor on the fuel rail or between the pump and the injectors.

[00:31:46]Um so we have 110 these SKUs available.

[00:31:48]That is uh mixed between high and low pressure uh fuel pressure sensors.

[00:31:53]And these are precision-engineered to match OEM specifications and to uh keep your vehicle running exactly as it's expected to.

[00:32:10]So this is a stocking guide for uh our GDI high-pressure fuel pumps. These are just some of our uh our pumps that we think you'll be seeing high demand for out in the field. These are really some of our highest-selling pumps uh with some really good coverage VIO here. Uh again, I would I would, you know, familiarize yourself with these parts and the applications that they fit because your customers are going to be coming in, "Do you have GDP 105? Do you have GDP 202? Um and we're seeing really, really high demand for all of these right now.

[00:32:43]And we believe that you will, too.

[00:32:48]I also want to highlight for a moment our GDI fuel pump kits. Uh these include not just the high-pressure fuel pump, but everything needed for servicing the vehicle's high-pressure fuel pump.

[00:32:59]Uh why are these important? Because even after you scan the vehicle, sometimes it is near impossible to determine if the lack of fuel pressure is because of a failed high-pressure fuel pump or a worn camshaft follower, maybe there's a leak in a fuel feed line somewhere. Um you really don't have that answer until you go in to replace the part. So, before you even start the repair, these kits guarantee you have everything you need to go in and uh and make sure that you can replace everything and get your system or your customer's system up and running again as easily as possible.

[00:33:34]Uh this this product line won the best new product award during Apex 2023.

[00:33:39]And we have seven kits available right now, but we are identifying new key applications and planning to expand the product line.

[00:33:47]The last thing I want to talk about um is the testing that our injectors undergo. So, uh every one of our injectors goes through not only life cycle validation and end-of-line testing, but also vehicle testing. So, uh at our Greenville facility, when we're manufacturing these injectors, there's really, really comprehe- comprehensive testing done uh including endurance testing, spray pattern, flow rate, thermal cycling, shock load, and more.

[00:34:14]Uh we really want to make sure that not only are we matching the OEM specifications for these parts, so that they're performing exactly as expected on your vehicle, but also that they're going to hold up against, you know, the extreme conditions uh that fuel injectors naturally are going to face any inside your vehicle. There's a lot of heat, a lot of high pressure. uh Um and so we don't want to sell you a product that is not going to live up to those expectations. So, we really, really, really hammer on our testing.

[00:34:43]Um and then once once all the bench and lab testing is done, we go a step further and we conduct on-vehicle testing and validation at our testing center in Texas.

[00:34:53]Uh so so what this gets you is, you know, each SMP injector is required to pass every one of these tests with flying colors or it never comes to market. This is why we lead the aftermarket with durable, high-quality precision fuel injectors that your customer can rely on.

[00:35:11]And with that, I'm going to turn it over to Aaron uh for the last couple slides and to close it out for us. Thank you.

[00:35:17]>> Yeah, thank thank you very much, Jake.

[00:35:20]Yeah, so Jake touched a little bit on the metering disc and what it is and how it's manufactured. And I want to explain what that really means on the vehicle and in the real world. Because it really is that metering disc that determines the spray pattern of the fuel coming out of the injector.

[00:35:41]And this is a test that we recently did in Greenville, South Carolina at our facility, where we tested a few different uh injectors head-to-head. And the first thing we did was put the OE injector on to determine the the benchmark, to find out, you know, what is the the correct spray pattern for this vehicle, for this application. And it was 20°. Uh that's that's what it was measured at. Then we put on the standard unit, that was also 20°.

[00:36:10]Um you know, that this is a part that really should match OE performance.

[00:36:15]Uh there there isn't anything you can do to to tune it to really be better or or different, right? So, then we tested a lower cost unit, and that one was too narrow. And what really happens when it's too narrow is it doesn't allow the fuel to atomize as well.

[00:36:33]Uh the fuel ends up coming out much more of a liquid form rather than a nice fine mist that's uh easier to ignite.

[00:36:40][clears throat] Um so that that's really the downside of of a spray pattern that's too narrow.

[00:36:45]The other low-cost unit that was tested was too wide. And And this is where, you know, you risk getting that wall wash, having some fuel in in a small trace amount drip down the cylinder wall, but, you know, wash away the oil, potentially causing some some long-term damage. So, it really comes down to that metering disc and the design and the quality control in the manufacturing process.

[00:37:14]But, spray pattern isn't the only thing that the metering disc determines.

[00:37:20]It's also responsible for the fuel flow rate. This was another test that we did.

[00:37:27]So, you know, what you really want to see from here is consistency. So, when we tested three different OE injectors at the same time, they flowed the same amount.

[00:37:41]And when we tested the standard injectors, they flowed the same amount.

[00:37:47]And I And I think, you know, going through this and and seeing and and understanding where the O2 sensor is and how it's reading information and sending that to the vehicle's ECU helps get your mind's eye around how important it is for the fuel injectors to be performing consistently cuz it's very very difficult uh for the ECU to make correct adjustments when one injector is not performing as it should.

[00:38:16]Uh with the low-cost unit, the first one that we tested, it generally speaking it flowed a little bit too high. Um, you know, that is something that, you know, it the vehicle can adjust for to a degree. Uh, the part that was a little more worrying, though, was that they didn't all all three did not flow the same.

[00:38:37]One of them flowed much, much higher, much faster than the other two. This is a result of some of the holes in the metering disc just being too big. And when I say too big, it it's not a lot.

[00:38:52]It it's a few microns. And that's it, right? It's It's something you'd never, ever, ever be able to see with the naked eye, uh, but it's largely a a quality control process. Uh, and then we saw the other low-cost units relatively consistent, but just didn't flow enough, right? And again, this is a case where the for this particular vehicle, they were not calibrated correctly.

[00:39:17]Uh, it's most likely the holes in the metering disc were not quite as large as they uh, should have been for this particular vehicle, and perhaps that manufacturers using batch metering discs, something that's not uh, engine specific, application specific. Uh, but this is why metering discs matter so much to injector performance.

[00:39:43]To uh, to help you tell this story in the field and to your service provider customers, we've created an array of print materials. And these are available from your standard rep. Uh, they're also available on the digital resource section of our website. We've recently created these new metering disc cards that really explain how critical they are and how we manufacture them uh, using laser drilling in Greenville. Uh, we also have a six-page full program brochure, several different one-page flyers. We have them for GDI injectors, for GDI high-pressure fuel pumps, for GDI high-pressure fuel pump kits. So, it it they're very effective pieces that can be certainly be used when you're out there talking to your service provider customers, creating awareness, uh help it, you know, letting them know that you have this, that this is why it's good, this is the features and benefits.

[00:40:42]And we also create some materials to to maybe help you uh get some of your colleagues, uh store managers, area managers, whoever is responsible for inventory at the stores to help make sure you folks do have the parts on your shelf that people are going to be asking for today and tomorrow, right? And that's where our our new part spotlights come in, uh the pieces that showcase the the up-and-coming numbers, uh cuz we really want to make sure that you're you're prepared for the future.

[00:43:54]And then uh you know, just to help wrap up uh what we covered today, you know, there is some real value I think in going to market with a program that is 100% new, never remanufactured, you know, every component, the coil windings, everything is new, right? Um we manufacture in Greenville, South Carolina. I I think that's a big deal. I think that's important to people. And we take the precision from the design, engineering, manufacturing standpoint of the metering discs very, very seriously because it's so important to injector performance and in turn engine performance. Um that's how we get the correct spray patterns and flow rates out of each one of them.

[00:44:38]And we're also able to round out the program really nicely with full full line coverage in all the injectors and the related components that are required uh to help your customers offer a complete service and help them get their customers uh back on the road.

[00:45:00]You know, I we're we're seeing a lot of growth and demand and interest with the high-pressure pumps. Uh I think that's going to be a very, very good category for us in the future and uh just want to encourage you to to make sure you look at that program seriously and and work with your rep, work with our team to make sure we get the the right uh fuel pumps on your shelf uh so you can be prepared for the future as more of those uh aged vehicles start to see failure rates. And then, you know, we also certainly try to to help create materials, create videos uh where you can take to the street and talk to your service provider customers about this program, about the wide coverage, about the the very specific features and benefits of our parts.
