In court proceedings, defendants who fail to understand or comply with legal procedures, such as failing to appear at scheduled hearings or not responding to court communications, face serious consequences including extended jail time, loss of legal representation options, and additional charges for failure to appear. The video demonstrates two cases where defendants' lack of engagement with the court system resulted in negative outcomes, highlighting the importance of understanding and following court procedures to avoid unnecessary legal complications.

>> Good morning.
Uh, did you see a video this morning about your rights or get a written copy to read?
>> Yeah.
>> Do you have any questions about your rights, ma'am?
>> Absolutely.
>> What questions do you have about your rights?
>> I don't understand any of this. I've been booked with I haven't been booked yet. I haven't had a phone call, but yet I'm in court, your honor. I didn't know what type of court this was. That's all.

>> Yeah, but I didn't understand them.
>> Okay. What did you not understand?
>> I don't understand the type of court system this is. I don't understand my rights because so many of them have been violated already. I just don't understand. I'm not I'm I'm just not under I'm not comprehending any of it.
>> Let let let me ask you this. Did you listen to a video or did you actually read your rights?
>> I tried to read and understand, but I wasn't able.
>> Okay. do you read English?
>> Yes, ma'am. Yes.
>> Okay. All right.
Um would you like me to read you >> This is a international admiralty court.
I think we're all we're all aware of that.
>> You're right.
>> Well, I can read. I can read. Um but I'm not comprehending. Maybe it's because of my medical condition. I don't know.
>> Okay.
>> really not understanding none of this at all.
>> All right. So, what is your address?
>> I don't have one. I'm homeless.
>> Okay, where do you get mail somewhere?
>> Um at a old address back home.
>> Okay.
Um the address we have is 26 oh uh 11 Lakeshore Boulevard.
When was the last time you lived there?
>> Um about a year ago.
>> Where have you been since >> Um I've been staying um on the streets and people's couches.
>> Okay, so when did you come to uh LaPorte County?
>> Um this morning seeking justice.
>> Okay, and where did you come from?
>> Cleveland, Ohio. I mean, no. I was in um Chicago.
>> Okay, and what brought you to LaPorte County?
>> I was trying to go back towards home and I got deterred through um Michigan.
>> Okay. All right. So, I'm going to ask you to listen to the prosecutor. She's going to read you what the charges are.
Okay?
>> Yes, ma'am.
>> On May 21st, 2026, in the county of LaPorte and state of Indiana, Valencia Darcelle DeJesus did unlawfully, knowingly, or intentionally, not having a contractual interest, refuse to leave the property of another person after having been asked to leave by that person or that person's agent. This is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in the LaPorte County Jail and a fine of up to $5,000.
Do you understand the charge and the possible penalty?
>> Yes.
>> Okay, I will enter a plea of not guilty for you, Mr. Hayzus.
Um, are you uh going to need a public defender to represent you? Are you going to hire an attorney? Do you want to represent yourself?
>> I don't know what to do. I'm homeless.
I never been here before.
Um, I'm shocked and appalled at a lot of things that's going on right now. So, I I have no idea. I have no idea.
>> Do you have a telephone?
>> I have nothing.
>> Okay. I will appoint you a public defender.
And I'm going to set this relatively quickly so we can see if we can get this to addressed. Okay. So, we see if we can get this um, addressed.
I will set this for June 2nd at 12:45.
Your public defender is going to be in touch with you.
You'll be brought back >> how how if I don't I don't have nowhere to stay? Where I'm going to be staying?
>> You Well, um, I've set a $600 bond. Um, if you can post the bond >> How if I can't do anything? You won't even let me use the phone.
>> If you can't post the bond, then you'll stay where you're at for right now.
Okay? That's why I set this as quickly as I could. All right?
>> I don't stay here in this county. How is any of this going on?
>> Ma'am, you've been charged with a crime, but the misdemeanor. I have entered a plea of not guilty. I've appointed you a public defender, and I've set this for another hearing. That's all I can do this morning. Thank you.
>> What a mockery of justice.
>> Also, um yeah, I told you I She has to be playing. She has to be.
She understands what's going on. And why does what if you don't live in Laporte, what does that have anything to do with what you're charged with?
But uh you know what, she'll be living there for a little bit at least. She can't post a bond. All right, next one.
>> State of Indiana versus Brian David Lawson, 2410 CM 2493.
All right, Mr. Lawson, it looks supposed court September 25th of a Sorry, it's going to 2020. You didn't come to court.
Where were you? Or is that a a pre-trial meeting?
>> I was actually here in Laporte, and I made a mistake and missed court on accident. I didn't do it on purpose.
>> You did what?
>> I was here in Laporte, and I missed court on accident. I didn't do it on purpose. I don't not running from you guys. It was an accident.
>> [snorts] >> I have no intention on not going to court.
>> Okay, so actually this was a meeting with the prosecutors that day.
>> Okay.
I can promise you I'll be at my next court date. I have no intention of running.
>> What's your address?
>> 314 Niles Street.
>> All right, while she's looking this up So I knew that was going to happen right when I paused it. All right, when I started talking.
This guy is going pro se in this case.
Apparently, he had a meeting with the prosecutor, which is what we just heard.
He didn't show up for it. So, there was a warrant put out for his arrest. It's not a court date. And he keeps saying he's not going to miss a court date.
Told you like it The amount of the amount of confusion going around this court right now is baffling.
>> It looks like >> [clears throat] >> This is an old charge.
You were read your initial rights October 22nd of 2024. Plea of not guilty was entered. And this matter was set so that you could meet with the prosecutors for pro se pre-trial conference on November 21st.
This is 2024.
It looks like there was a phone call that day and the matter was reset to December 19th.
At that point, it was then reset to January 16th of 2025.
You were notified of that hearing date.
It was reset to February 5th of 2025.
It looks like you uh were given notice of that. You failed to appear on February 5th of 2025.
Continued.
Um, on September 22nd, 2025, after notice, you again failed to appear and a warrant was issued.
So, um, is the state uh continue to be willing to meet with him in a pro se or or not?
>> Um, you're under the state has attempted that four times, so I I don't believe the state is inclined to continue attempts.
>> Okay. So, Mr. Lawson, you've been charged with operating vehicle while uh without financial responsibility uh with a prior conviction. Um, the state offered to meet with you without having to hire an attorney.
They are withdrawing that offer at this point, so you're going to need to hire an attorney. I've entered a plea of not guilty for you, sir.
Uh do you have a telephone number?
>> Yes.
>> What is it?
>> 219 So, what's >> Are you planning on hiring an attorney?
>> What do I need an attorney for?
This is an insurance ticket traffic ticket. I don't even understand what's going on here.
>> Well, what's going on is um the state has tried to work with you to get this settled and you don't show up. That's the problem. So, um >> first court date and they we rescheduled it. I didn't I didn't miss my court date on purpose.
I came here >> Sir, you didn't miss a court date. You missed four appointments with the prosecutor to try to get this settled.
Okay?
>> We get a lawyer.
>> So, now they are not going to do that uh informally. We'll proceed. You will see Magistrate then on June 23rd at 12:45. [clears throat] And if you're going to hire an attorney you can bring your attorney. It does not look like a bond was ever set. So, the court sets a $100 bond.
>> Ma'am, can I please have an OR? I need to go have surgery on my hand. And I'm not a flight risk. I'm not going to run.
I have I live here in town. You can even ask the police whenever they see me. I didn't run from them. I came straight up to them. I have no intention to run from you guys. This is I didn't realize that it was this extent of a charge where I could be in jail. I thought it was just a ticket.
>> You were charged with a C misdemeanor.
Okay? [clears throat] >> They wrote me a ticket here for >> You will see Magistrate Link on June 23rd at at 12:45. Thank you.
>> You need to call the jail.
You're a insurance.
I didn't say >> Yeah, look at that face of the judge.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, uh that's what happens. You go to jail if you you're charged with a misdemeanor and you don't comply essentially.
Uh but yeah, I I get why he's frustrated, but you know, he he let it go too far.
It's a misdemeanor, dude.
Luckily for him, if he just pleads guilty to it, he might get time served.
Yeah, we'll see. Or he'll sit in jail for a month until his next court date on an insurance ticket. Like he was very happy to to say at the end of this hearing. All right, that's all I have.
Just a couple quick ones. Hopefully you enjoy it. Hit the like button on your way out be Yeah, hit the like button on your way out if you have not done so already.
That's what I was going to say. Also, like, comment, and subscribe to all those fun things.
That's it. That's all I got.
Goodnight, stay by.
>> Goodnight, everyone.
