Lagos State Government Resumes Badagry link Bridge Construction

[00:00:01]There is this particular bridge along Agbara-Badagry Expressway around River axis and this bridge is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

[00:00:13]I came to this place to make the video but on getting to the site, the construction was on halt because the workers were on holiday.

[00:00:23]But that couldn't stop me from making the video as I was able to walk around the construction site and also see some of the equipment they were using to regenerate this bridge or better still rehabilitate it. As you can see, due to the construction, they have diverted all the road to one way and this was actually causing a massive traffic within these premises. Nonetheless, I was able to walk throughout the construction and you could see just the bridge and the road leading to the bridge was totally asphalt but because of the rehabilitation, they have removed the asphalt part on the road and they have poured concrete reinforcement.

[00:01:03]This is going to make the bridge last longer and I hope by the time they are done with this section, they could as well move to the other side where they diverted the road to one way and also make it concrete reinforced because it's actually stronger, more durable, last longer and even help with lower maintenance as Nigeria has a very poor habit of maintenance.

[00:01:26]Now, as you can see, this is one of the equipment they left behind because they couldn't move this due to the holiday.

[00:01:35]And this particular equipment, you could see it's a heavy duty truck and it can be stolen or even spoiled as there were no immigration officers around and some military personnel.

[00:01:48]Now, you may be wondering what actually are they doing on this bridge? This bridge is totally bad because there are a lot of potholes on the bridge. There are zero hard guard or handrails on the bridge. And as you can see, poopoo and defecations are all over the bridge.

[00:02:05]This has become the toilet for the people. People poop straight from the bridge into the river below. And these bushes here are all swamps.

[00:02:15]Now, what I also understood is that the asphalt on the bridge was so bad that they had to grade them off, like shave them off the road and pour new asphalt.

[00:02:27]And you could see the bridge has zero drainage, even though there is a massive river under the bridge. This water does not need pipe or anything. It could easily flow into the river. But still yet, they are stuck on the bridge. It rained the day before I came and the water are still on the bridge. That is a bad sign that this bridge isn't good or this bridge isn't well maintained. But nonetheless, I will not just walk only on the bridge.

[00:02:58]I will also be going under the bridge to show you what it looks like. And if you stay in Lagos or any riverine areas, you will notice there are these people who take sand from the base of rivers, canals, and fill them up on a boat and transfer them to places where they sell them.

[00:03:17]That business is really booming right here. And I could tell from the bridge and the work under the bridge. There are lots of canoes, lot of wooden boats that has no machines to move. So, they use a little boat with propellers to push them forward. So, they line them up maybe in 20s, in 10, in 30, and they use this particular boats to pull them to the destination where they will be sold.

[00:03:44]It's a profitable business, but it's a very risky one. As they don't buy the sand, they just get them free from the water. and it's also risky because in those water there are infections, there are snakes, there are reptiles, there are different things, there are also sometimes where they drown. It has happened a lot of time, especially at night. So, now this isn't even the case but this bridge is really bad. You could tell from the look, the poor drainage system, the zero hand guard or zero protection of the bridge and also the asphalt remover. All these things is to tell you that this bridge has been used to its limit and it's beginning to fall apart.

[00:04:26]Now, something that comes to my mind as a concern is that they move all the weight of the cars and other trucks to one way and upon completion of this other bridge, what happens and what will be the fate of the other bridge?

[00:04:44]Will it still be able to function properly or will they move over there to also rehabilitate it?

[00:04:50]Now, looking at this space you will see there are zero traffic lights, zero street lights and zero pedestrian lines or walkway and that is very risky because there is no way you could get to the other side without crossing this bridge and that to me is a very big concern because life comes first before any other thing and you could see where the bridge stopped, you could see there's a big hole right there and that is not supposed to be so.
