In 1900, George C. Boldt, the manager of the world-famous Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, purchased a 5-acre private island in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York and reshaped the shoreline with dynamite to create a heart shape, then hired 300 workers to build a 120-room medieval-style castle for his beloved wife Louise as a romantic surprise for Valentine's Day 1904; however, just one month before completion, Louise died of heart failure at age 41, causing George to abandon the project and never return to the island for the next 70 years.
