[00:00:17]That's the story we're going to follow in this 25-part series.

[00:00:21]The story of salvation and the great truths that he gives us.

[00:00:27]So, let's begin in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

[00:00:29]>> Amen.

[00:00:30]>> Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

[00:00:33]I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

[00:00:37]I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

[00:00:45]He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.

[00:00:51]On the third day, he rose again.

[00:00:53]He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

[00:01:00]>> I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

[00:02:12]>> Our first mystery.

[00:02:14]It can be really hard to believe in God when there is so much suffering of the innocent. I mean, how could a good God, who is supposed to be all powerful and all good, let an innocent person suffer?

[00:02:29]There is a powerful scene in Elie Wiesel's classic book about the Nazi concentration camps.

[00:02:38]The book is called Night.

[00:02:40]In that book, an innocent young boy is murdered by hanging.

[00:02:45]And as he dies, the question goes up, "Where is God?"

[00:02:51]This scene crystallizes that ultimate challenge to faith.

[00:02:56]If God is all powerful and all good, then why does he allow evil?

[00:03:03]Why does he allow the suffering of the innocent?

[00:03:10]Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.

[00:05:45]>> Our second mystery, when hear of evil and suffering, something inside us rises up in indignation.

[00:05:55]We feel that things should not be this way.

[00:05:59]Evil men should not inflict harm on the innocent.

[00:06:03]Torturous illnesses should not afflict children.

[00:06:08]But consider the source of that feeling.

[00:06:12]Where do we get that sense?

[00:06:14]Where do we get the sense that things just should not be this way?

[00:06:20]It only makes sense to talk about the way things should not be if there's a way things should be.

[00:06:29]And it only makes sense to talk about the way things should be if they have been made a certain way, given a certain purpose, if they have been created with a certain design.

[00:06:43]And none of that makes sense without a creator, a designer, an ultimate giver of purpose.

[00:06:50]So our very reaction to evil shows two things.

[00:06:55]There is a God, and he did not design things to be this way.

[00:07:03]But we still have to ask, why does he allow evil?

[00:07:07]Why does he let bad things happen to good people?

[00:09:43]>> Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy.

[00:09:51]>> Our third mystery.

[00:09:52]There are certain goods I don't want to eliminate even if eliminating those goods would also eliminate certain evils.

[00:10:02]I don't want to eliminate my house even though that would eliminate all kinds of cleaning and maintenance evils.

[00:10:10]I don't want to eliminate my family even though that would have eliminated all kinds of difficulties and misunderstandings and some regrets.

[00:10:21]And I don't want to eliminate my need or love for food even though that would eliminate a lot of weight gain and hunger.

[00:10:32]Well, similarly there are certain goods God does not want to eliminate. These are great goods, maybe the greatest.

[00:10:42]And God will not destroy them even if to destroy them would eliminate evil.

[00:10:51]He will not destroy human beings even though that would eliminate evil.

[00:10:56]He will not destroy the free will and the capacity to love and withhold love which is part of being human even though that would eliminate evil.

[00:11:10]And he will not destroy our capacity to receive to rely on others and to be grateful.

[00:11:17]He will not make us impervious and insensitive, self-autonomous, and indestructible robots even though that would eliminate the suffering of the innocent.

[00:11:31]He will not destroy the family structure where we benefit from the gifts of our ancestors and we suffer from their failures.

[00:11:40]We receive life from Adam and Eve and we also receive the trials of our wounded humanity from them.

[00:11:47]And is the first not worth the second?

[00:11:53]No.

[00:11:54]The goods God has given us are great goods and he will not destroy them even to end all the evil and suffering.

[00:12:06]And we can never thank him enough not only for giving us these gifts but for giving them to us forever and refusing to take them back.

[00:14:59]Not only has God given us great gifts already, but he plans on giving us even greater gifts in the future.

[00:15:07]And so many times, these greater gifts spring out of the suffering, even innocent suffering.

[00:15:17]This pattern shows up again and again, if you watch for it.

[00:15:21]We get unjustly fired from one job that actually puts us in the way of getting a better job.

[00:15:29]It's precisely because your kid was such a mess in his teens that you're so deeply grateful he's now married, faithful, and is holding down a job.

[00:15:39]It was that early heart attack that shook you awake and pushed you to get your life in order so you could actually live much longer in the end.

[00:15:51]Even more, it was your wife's nervous breakdown that gives you the chance to show her how much you love her.

[00:15:59]It's the death of a friend that makes you get serious about your faith again.

[00:16:04]It's your financial trouble that makes you remember what's really important and what isn't.

[00:16:11]And of course, it's death itself, as Jesus has proven for us, that has become the doorway to eternal glory.

[00:16:22]God can't get rid of evil and suffering without eliminating all the best goods in the world.

[00:16:30]But what he can do, and what he always does, is use evil and suffering as the opportunity to give us new goods greater than any we have ever imagined.

[00:16:48]We just have to be willing to trust him and accept the gifts as they come from his hands.

[00:19:31]>> Our fifth mystery, for God to eliminate all evil and suffering, he would also have to eliminate even greater goods, like human freedom, the capacity to love, and ultimately humanity itself.

[00:19:46]But God will not do that, because he is so good and so all powerful that he can bring an even greater good out of evil.

[00:19:59]From the greatest moral evil ever committed, the humiliation, torture, and murder of his own son, God brought about the greatest good, our redemption.

[00:20:13]At the cross and at the empty tomb, God proved forever that he can work all things for good for those who love him.

[00:20:25]And Jesus accepted his suffering, and he offered it to the Father for our salvation.

[00:20:31]And now, he gives us a way to join him in the great work of saving other souls.

[00:20:41]He invites us to accept our own crosses and offer them up.

[00:20:50]Whatever pain, whatever loss, whatever disappointment, whatever evil we face, and to unite it to the sacrifice of Jesus for the salvation of our family and friends.

[00:21:02]So, as a resolution, let's do two things.

[00:21:05]When we face some evil or suffering that we can't understand and we can't change, we need to immediately surrender it to God and to say out loud, "Jesus, I know you are there and will work this for some greater good.

[00:21:23]Jesus, I trust in you."

[00:21:26]And second, accept and offer up whatever cross comes your way this day for the conversion of all the loved ones of those who are praying this rosary.

[00:24:58]>> And I think that needs a little context because the point I'm trying to make is this.

[00:25:03]We're not fighting alone.

[00:25:06]This is not just a rosary podcast.

[00:25:09]This is a mission to build a spiritual army of people who yes, who live friendship with Jesus, but also who help their loved ones get to heaven through authentic friendship.

[00:25:22]So, it's the mission is friendship with Jesus and friendship with others. That's the heart of our movement. That's what we're inviting people into, that mission.

[00:25:31]>> Mhm.

[00:25:33]>> But 21 years ago, in 2005, Archbishop Naumann did something really great for us.

[00:25:41]He made us a public association of the faithful.

[00:25:45]Basically, that means the church looked at this work and said, "Yeah, this is a real Catholic mission and it's for the good of the church." And that recognition matters.

[00:25:56]Basically, what I'm saying is this.

[00:25:58]We're inviting people to become members of this movement, official members, because when you become a member of the Movement of the Holy Family, you're not just praying, working, or suffering alone.

[00:26:12]You're joining your prayers, works, joys, sufferings, sacrifices to those of thousands of other members.

[00:26:23]And that creates a spiritual pool, a spiritual treasury.

[00:26:29]And together, we offer them to God for the conversion, holiness, and salvation of our loved ones. So, we get to pool our spiritual resources to help in the conversion and salvation of our loved ones.

[00:26:44]So, basically, it means you're not praying with just your own strength, but with this whole community of people.

[00:26:54]>> Yeah.

[00:26:55]>> Which is not to say that your prayers don't matter or it's just like a sheer numbers thing, but just that it's in our human design that we're supposed to do things together.

[00:27:05]We're supposed to do things as a community. There's a different kind of love when we are really on mission together.

[00:27:13]That's beautiful.

[00:27:14]>> Yeah, no, no, no, that's what I was saying.

[00:27:15]>> I forget that.

[00:27:17]>> But it But it doesn't happen automatically. It doesn't happen by just praying the the Rosary podcast with us.

[00:27:23]I mean, a person has to make an act to the will.

[00:27:26]So, if you want to share more fully in this mission and to share in that treasury of graces, all you have to do is just freely choose to become a member. It's free, but you have to make the act of the will. And it's really easy.

[00:27:50]But it does take an act of the will.

[00:27:53]So, uh I think it's pretty amazing to have thousands and tens of thousands of people working together for the salvation of each other's loved ones.

[00:28:06]>> Yeah.

[00:28:06]We need that. And we definitely need the reminder, too.

[00:28:10]>> So, what what were you reflecting on with this whole Because this is I mean, this is a a big stumbling block to people to have faith, the problem of evil, why innocent people suffer.

[00:28:20]>> And it's always I mean, it's not a stumbling block that you get over once and then you just get suffering and you move past it. It's just We're always faced with different kinds of suffering, but I I was Suffering has so many different effects in our life, but I was thinking about Sometimes it's really hard to imagine what heaven's like.

[00:28:41]>> Yeah.

[00:28:42]>> And it's hard to imagine that you'll like it because you think, well, I'm not going to have all the things I like doing here. It'll be so abstract and it won't be feel very human. I like there are elements of this life I like so much, but it suffering sometimes helps me imagine more clearly, or at least in a way that's more inspiring, what heaven will be like because man, I would really like this life if I never got the flu.

[00:29:09]>> Yeah.

[00:29:10]>> If I didn't have arthritis, if I didn't get hungry and tired, and if I just wasn't so often suffering takes us out of the things we love, but it also paints a really good picture in the negative space of what heaven could be like.

[00:29:28]>> Yeah.

[00:29:29]>> Because I like life without suffering. I really do.

[00:29:33]And that doesn't mean I have to be miserable every time I'm suffering just because it's there, but it's a good reminder that this gets better.

[00:29:42]>> Yeah.

[00:29:42]>> It genuinely does.

[00:29:44]>> I think the two things I forget to reflect on, think about, are one, the shortness of life, and the length of heaven.

[00:29:52]>> Yes.

[00:29:53]Yeah.

[00:29:54]>> Heaven no suffering in heaven.

[00:29:56]>> There's also its own sad suffering, and it's hard going through the best moments of life, and then the awareness creeps in that it's very fleeting. I love going to concerts, but I am very aware song by song, this ends soon.

[00:30:13]>> Yeah.

[00:30:13]>> Ah, it's the encore now. It's over now.

[00:30:16]And to experience heaven as something that goes on, and doesn't run out. We run out of everything here, and that's okay cuz it reminds us that there's something that doesn't run out.

[00:30:28]But the other thing that crossed my mind in this is that there's always that ex- that not an excuse, but it's the reasoning people point towards where us it it didn't make sense to me that we suffer so much, and there's a good God, and I just don't these things don't connect for me. But what they end up doing is they they remove God from their life. You haven't removed suffering, but you've removed the good part.

[00:30:52]>> And you've you've removed your only hope >> Yeah.

[00:30:55]>> to overcome suffering.

[00:30:57]>> Mhm. It's the only thing that could make it meaningful. It's the only thing that could Again, that what we're describing suffering reminds us of heaven, you you're just removing that cuz it's fair that you're like this is not how we're supposed to be and I loved that picture you drew because it's there must be something it's supposed to be like then.

[00:31:18]>> Yes.

[00:31:19]Yeah.

[00:31:20]The the greatest way to overcome suffering >> Mhm.

[00:31:25]>> I think it's twofold.

[00:31:28]To fix our eyes on heaven and then just live in the present moment.

[00:31:34]>> Yeah.

[00:31:35]>> Cuz you can always get through the moment.
