[00:00:00]Michael Winslow of the Police Academy movies wanted to make a children's film specifically for his kids. And for some reason, Michael Winslow had some sort of sway over actors. They got Kathy Kenny.

[00:02:12]Michael Winslow was like, "There are no movies for children. Absolutely no movies kids can enjoy. Every once in a while you get a Spy Kids or an agent Cody Banks. Otherwise, 2005 hard Rs.

[00:02:29]>> I looked around out there and I noticed that with my children there wasn't enough for them to see. I mean, you know, there's the occasional good movie like your your Spy Kids and there's an occasional Cody Banks. If you're lucky, you get a couple of those every every year. So, I will put forward my best effort and get it together and try to give everyone some alternatives and something to see.

[00:02:49]>> So, he set out to make his own movie for kids that his children could enjoy. And >> but he did not succeed.

[00:02:56]>> To do that, he had to create a production company, Winslow Productions.

[00:03:00]This is their only production as far as I know. And they created Lenny the Wonder Dog. All about a dog that is injected with a smart microchip >> by Miles Dyson himself from Terminator 2. So, we know that chip has Skynina in it.

[00:03:18]>> It's not every day you hear that you're responsible for Lenny the Wonderdog. He took it pretty well.

[00:03:24]>> I feel like I'm going to throw up.

[00:03:26]>> That's why he has all the information about everyone cuz this chip comes preloaded with personal info about everyone the dog looks at. Where is this guy stealing this info?

[00:03:46]Evil Dr. Vagner wants to steal the chip to control the world. But there is a little boy named Zach and a little girl named Becky who have teamed up with a cop played by Michael Winslow. And they are going to thwart him. And for some reason, Michael Winslow had some sort of sway over actors because they got a lot of people in this.

[00:04:07]>> He called in some favors. He had some dirt on some people because I don't know. He got two people from the Drew Carey show in on this in 2004, and they were still pretty big names at that point. I mean, Craig Ferguson still is, but Craig Ferguson plays the villain in this. They got Kathy Kenny as the news reporter.

[00:04:23]>> They got one scene of the two of them together. They got one scene of the two of them together where they clearly just told them to improv because they had them. So they just say nonsense for a while.

[00:04:34]>> Did you have a special skill? Yes, I did. I used to juggle things. I used to like to take cats and uh hamsters and occasionally an eagle.

[00:04:44]>> That might have been the majority of Kathy Kenny's bits, too, where she's just talking about like all sandwicher cookies were stolen.

[00:04:51]>> She just made it up. In a related story, the stolen cookies have been found in the basement of Principal Waters's home.

[00:05:00]>> Yeah, it's possible it was just improv on her part, except for the parts that were plot important, >> but they have her fill in a lot of gaps and that's just like, what do we do? I don't know, cut to her on the TV, her wood panel news from the 70s. When they do the interview with her and Craig Ferguson, they awkwardly cut from that to another news report where she's wearing a different outfit because that's when the actual plot stuff happens.

[00:07:48]>> So, Michael Winslow, I mean, the interviews for this movie are very funny because he talks about the fact he wanted to make a children's film specifically for his kids cuz he wasn't satisfied with the content that was coming out except for things like Agent Cody Banks. And knowing that Agent Cody Banks was somewhat of an inspiration for this makes a lot of sense because Agent Cody Banks was also unreasonably horny for a children's film. They have the premature ejaculation Capri Sun joke.

[00:08:17]>> What is going on? I'm not unconvinced that the singer was not named Angie after Angie Harmon as well.

[00:08:42]>> Yeah, even though they they weren't wearing a lot of clothes in that first scene. Maybe we should be reviewing Agent Cody.

[00:08:57]I think a lot of the strange tone of this film also could be explained by realizing that this was written and directed by two Israeli guys that seem to be trying to make this somewhat of a fusion of their culture with with America.

[00:09:11]>> They're talking about how they wanted to make sure it's very funny in the interviews.

[00:09:16]It's a kids movie. It has to be so funny. Everything should be funny. Even like random people should be funny. We decided that uh if we're going to make a kids movie, it has to be funny. We believe that every comedy should have every character in the movie, if it's the guy in the cash register, you know, or the guy pumping the gas or anybody has to be funny.

[00:09:38]>> You know, they injected humor into every scene was appreciated, seen, heard. Two of the villains are called Hanky and Panky. Come on.

[00:09:54]>> It's such a good joke. They're identical twins, but then one of them's so tall his head's always cut off.

[00:10:16]>> There's one point where Craig Ferguson starts talking to the camera, then a hand slaps him, which is apparently, I guess, us. the audience slapping you.

[00:10:23]>> I guess he does address us like he says like, "Hey, I can't take these guys seriously." That's funny.

[00:10:31]>> No. How could I take these people seriously?

[00:10:34]>> How many of these bad kids movies have we watched where there's an interview basically like that? Like all the kids movies are crap. I'm going to make a good one. And they didn't.

[00:10:44]>> Apparently, they came up with some weird fusion expression which is mostly just known from this movie. Holy saba.

[00:11:19]>> Yeah. Holy Saba is not a thing, but apparently it is a thing to everyone in this universe. But there seem to be a lot of things that are just done and accepted in this universe. This is kind of like their own thing, right? Like this is not our world. It's perhaps a parallel dimension.

[00:11:33]>> Yeah. It's like close to our world, but not a world where boys walk around in question mark shirts. People randomly go into Spanish soap operas.

[00:11:47]Santa Maria >> that's funny >> opera music plays over >> cops they drop that part way through >> yeah they seem to get bored with that gag and move on to some other things >> it doesn't add real humor it's just like that's distracting that that's playing over Michael Winslow not doing much. And they even do a record scratch like it's really been interrupted by Fartman and the other guy, I don't know, interviewing a clown.

[00:12:30]>> Michael Winslow's character is really getting big dogged by Fartman.

[00:12:37]This is just some regular cop, but for some reason his introduction scene, he's doing some kind of presentation about safety and some auditorium for kids, but he's not doing anything related to the slide behind him. He's just making his sound effects and EVERYONE'S LIKE GOING CRAZY.

[00:13:07]I love it. Like they're setting themselves on fire.

[00:13:11]Yeah. This is the greatest thing of my life.

[00:13:15]>> It's that TV fun house where they say the catchphrases. Yay. I'm Joe Piscapo.

[00:13:23]>> Once an audience likes a catchphrase, it doesn't always accept a new one.

[00:13:33]I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN this presentation because he finishes this safety presentation to the school and then he goes backstage and then there's a singing parrot and like what is going on?

[00:13:43]>> Why is that the followup to that?

[00:13:45]>> Ladies and gentlemen, Ginger the opera parrot.

[00:13:51]>> But what about the dog?

[00:13:52]>> Right. Right. Uh don't worry about that.

[00:13:54]I've put Fartman and Harley on that.

[00:13:57]He's trying to become a detective, but he's not taken seriously by the people on the force. So, he goes to investigate these disappearances in town, which tie into the scientist that put the chip inside Lenny, the Wonderdog, and he takes some paw prints cuz he realizes a dog must have opened this window. They call him Ace Ventura, pet detective. All of the policemen laugh at him in unison, including Fartman.

[00:14:21]>> Hey, look who it is. Ace Ventura.

[00:14:26]make any good collars lately or were they leashes?

[00:14:32]>> It's truly the most humiliating. He's He's ready to die after that.

[00:14:36]>> Yeah, he's ready to He's like, "Take me now."

[00:14:39]>> He sees the kids. They're shadowed by the sun. He apparently thinks it's the angel of death and he's like, "I'm ready. Take me now.

[00:14:47]>> I'm ready.

[00:14:50]I'm ready."

[00:14:52]>> Razle sent us. HE APPARENTLY QUIT the force, went to the park, laid down, and went, "Kill me now, guy."

[00:14:59]>> He didn't change any of that by the end of the movie either, cuz he goes, "Take me now." And then he rides off on a motorcycle that had a helmet.

[00:15:10]>> It's been a good run.

[00:15:11]>> Like, remember my safety thing? Neither do I, cuz I didn't give you any information. Bye, kids. Just made noises and went, "Thank you. Yeah, Michael Winslow gets involved with this because the kids are sent by one of the other sidekicks to meet another sidekick who appears to be an Asian stereotype who's not Asian, but does some kung fu stuff.

[00:15:40]>> Then Michael Winslow is sitting in the same park that he's going to be in and then they think that he's that guy and then just decide to ignore the other guy.

[00:15:48]>> And they hang out with the cop. You see the random guy in the park just doing martial arts. It's a lot like the Frying Ryan scene.

[00:15:57]>> You know what? All roads lead back to Flying Ryan.

[00:16:05]>> There's behind the scenes things that are going on that are on screen. You can see what's going on on screen. For instance, the scientist does not show up in the final scene. In the final scene, they just show a cardboard cut out of him and one of his little sidekick guys as if they were there, which seems to imply that they're dead.

[00:16:22]>> Yeah, he's dead.

[00:16:24]>> It seemed like they're acting like he's kidnapped, but we never see him alive after the opening scene.

[00:16:29]>> They didn't have him past the, you know, half day they had him for shooting.

[00:16:33]>> So, he died.

[00:16:34]>> So, they're like, I don't know.

[00:16:36]>> Dr. Island is still in a coma. Doctors at Newville Hospital say >> if you hadn't put Dr. Island in a coma, we'd have the chip by now. What he is doing was crimes against humanity and canines as well. So maybe it's better.

[00:16:49]>> It's really not clear what this chip can and cannot do. The backstory is that he and Dr. Vagner went to the scientist academy together and Vagner was kind of the evil scientist variety. So he got kicked out. But he wants to take the thing that the good scientist guy was working on, which was a chip that can train dogs automatically. So, if you just give them the chip, then they can do whatever ability you want them to do, like service dog type things, but apparently also it can make them geniuses. And it may or may not be able to allow them to talk. Kind of ambiguous at the end. It may be Lenny just could do that anyway.

[00:17:26]>> Yeah. You know, he loses the chip, but then he can still talk. So, >> yeah, they did take out the chip, right?

[00:17:33]>> No more talking Lenny.

[00:17:34]>> Lenny Dylan. That's a good name. I don't think dogs have last names.

[00:17:39]>> Holy Saba, Lenny, you can talk.

[00:17:41]>> Let's just keep it our own little secret.

[00:17:43]>> Oh, it gives him laser powers at one point, too.

[00:17:45]>> Yeah, he's got crotch laser.

[00:17:46]>> He does his crotch lasers, but only one time. He could have used this any other time in the movie.

[00:17:51]>> I think he uses it once after, too, and then he stopped.

[00:17:54]>> And when did he use it again?

[00:17:55]>> Just shortly after that. So, he uses the laser twice, I think, and then he forgets he has it.

[00:18:01]>> Pretty cool stuff. He's got all of this information that I don't know why or where it would be cataloged cuz he can see all this information about people like it's an episode of MTV's Next with a little text about them their interests and little comedic bits.

[00:18:15]>> Yeah, that dog needed to be staring at that teacher in her first shot where it's just focused on her chest.

[00:18:23]>> It's getting hot.

[00:18:24]>> Yeah, good kids move.

[00:18:27]>> They couldn't afford It's getting hot in here. They couldn't afford Britney Spears, which is why they added some dubbing over when Craig Ferguson is saying some lyrics to one of her songs because they realize they'd have to pay for it.

[00:18:39]>> So, they're like, I don't know, maybe the girl's thinking something at this point.

[00:18:43]>> My loneliness is killing me.

[00:18:45]>> H, >> what an article. I mean, >> with a nutcase villain like this one, >> still >> I'm going to be collecting royalties from the movie.

[00:18:54]>> Then we have Britney Spears at home at the end. Britney Spears at home. I have no idea with this concert. Craig Ferguson's plan is to take this chip that's used on dogs, but then use it on people on children so that they'll work for him and somehow he can rule the world and somehow this also ties into this concert. I'm not sure how >> the concert. Maybe that's the idea.

[00:19:18]>> He doesn't have the chip mass produced yet.

[00:19:21]>> No, I don't know what he's doing.

[00:19:22]>> He can't put his plan into action at this point. But there's one kid that they're experimenting on in his skyscraper/warehouse >> where he seems to be answering the same questions that Lenny was answering to prove that the chip has made him into a super dog.

[00:19:42]>> This kid is just coincidentally a genius or do they already have a ship like this?

[00:19:46]>> In which case, why do they need the dog?

[00:19:49]>> Yeah. It's unclear too if the concert at the end is supposed to be taking place in the school or if it is just the same auditorium and they're pretending it is someplace else. Vagner, he comes out to like talk to all of the kids. It's an audience primarily of children and then they offer them coupons for this cartoon rehabilitation center. There's this random running gag about cartoon rehabilitation that never comes to anything.

[00:20:12]>> I thought you kicked the cartoon habit.

[00:20:14]>> I did.

[00:20:15]>> Right. It'll get you two free sessions at the Cartoon Habit Rehabilitation Center.

[00:20:24]>> If anything, this movie seems very pro- cartoon because after they offer the cartoon rehabilitation, they introduce the singer with a cartoon and then they have several cartoon interstitials in this to cover up for shots that they didn't get. Yeah, they do use cartoons for establishing shots or a bunch of times they're just showing around the town and then there's just a big scene missing here with some big action sequence where they escape. It's just like we forgot to film this. So, here's this.

[00:20:54]>> I think it is not because they forgot to, but because they did not have the means or the know how to do this. The way they >> I don't think it's just forgot, but I mean obviously something happened and they didn't film the scene. the way that they've drawn this. There are so many identical scientists swarming them. It's like a scene from the Matrix, you know, where you have all of the Mr. Smiths coming in. But they're like, "Clearly, we can't do that." So, just pretend if we did do a cool fight scene. It's kind of like this.

[00:21:21]>> You said that once you fought off 54 ninjas all by yourself.

[00:21:24]>> 54 ninjas, right?

[00:21:26]>> You're a police officer.

[00:21:28]>> I was.

[00:21:29]>> Wa! A ninja cop.

[00:21:34]He thinks he's Bruce Lee.

[00:21:38]>> One of the few real establishing shots you shows some skyscraper building and they show the top of it implying that's where Craig Ferguson is, but then he's in some dingy warehouse.

[00:21:49]>> They clearly have one warehouse they can film in. They also use it for this shack that the scientist sidekick friend is working in. And they make a joke about how it's much larger on the inside, like it's a TARDIS. But clearly this is just because that's where they had to shoot and they had to explain why it looked massive compared to where they were supposed to be. Just incredible stuff.

[00:22:07]The sound is also very good in there.

[00:22:10]>> He mentioned a fellow scientist named Dr. Vagnner who started to play around with some of the experiments.

[00:22:16]>> I don't know how long they had Craig Ferguson to film for. Clearly, he was mostly shooting in this warehouse except for the very end. They have him walking around barefoot in this warehouse.

[00:22:24]>> They couldn't afford to give him shoes.

[00:22:27]>> He does a dance number. They showed this dance number in the trailer for this. We saw it at the beginning of another movie that we were watching. And the trailer was not even over yet before I'm like, I need to buy this film. I need to buy Lenny the Wonderdog. And I did not have any regret purchasing the film. It was much better than the one we were watching.

[00:23:21]>> I did want to do this movie because my son is two and this will be a good movie for him to see. except that I'm the villain in it. I don't know that that that actually makes sense now that I think about it. Maybe I should quit.

We just went to a concert and then there was audio ABOUT SOME GUY TRYING TO TAKE over the world cuz kids are dumb or something.

[00:28:56]We had to watch the whole thing like shrunken down. There was also a weird part during that first sound effect demonstration, whatever the Michael Winslow was doing. The police chief comes up and starts talking to them and for some reason this whole thing is in front of a green screen. Their stage is a green screen and then a sign language interpreter is there in the corner digitally added just for part of the scene. Who is seeing this? Why is this happening?

They're completely off-screen characters, but they want to do this thing where Zach has to sneak Lenny the Wonder Dog past the parents because the mum is allergic, you know, because that's a cliche in kids films.
