Texas Sub Crew Joins the RCSubGuy to Fix and Break and Fix a Shark and Test out Two New Subs!
Added:Well, greetings everyone. This is Bob Martin, the RC sub guy with the Nautilus Dryd docks. And uh we're doing RC sub stuff. Hopefully that's what you're interested in because that's all you're going to see here. This is by weekly update video and uh we got a lot going on here. We've got uh a giant 212 that we're building. We've got a shark that is going to work and then not work and then work and not work. and we're going to try and figure out what is going on with that. We got two new boats that came in. We're running through the shop.
We're going to try and get all rigged up. We got a whole mess of new awesome kits that we want to show you guys. And uh we're we're going to end up throwing some boats in the water and just crossing our fingers and hoping they work. So, uh hey uh sit down, strap in, grab your coffee, and uh let's get this week started.
Okay, let's get this week started. It's Monday and uh you'll notice we have a clear workbench.
Where the Ulisses once stood, we now have a a blank canvas to uh get stuff done that is obligated for me to have done. Logan's down here bright and early. What are what are you working on right now?
>> Uh I was missing a couple bolts on this.
So I grabbed some spare bolts out of our container and rettightened them. So every slot should now be bolted together.
>> Yeah. Bolted, glued, and glued. Like we used uh ABS cement to fuse the sections.
And they're and they're bolted. So, in theory, this is going to be good and and solid, which is going to be important cuz this is a big big big heavy hole. There you go. You can see next to Logan. We're going to we're going to kick things off though with uh with an unboxing. So, I I sold this this kit to a gentleman a long time ago. A long time ago. I don't think he's ever got it in the water. This is going to show you just how old this is. This is recognize these good old good old VEX sixchannel radios. They're pretty cool radios back in the day. Um had a few quirks, but I mean for the most part pretty good radio. It it happens, you know. Oh, and actually I got another customer out of Georgia that just let me know that uh he's going to be looking to send back something that he bought years and years and years ago that he just has not had the opportunity to to build out and he said he's doing airplanes. Like who would do airplanes when you could be doing submarines? I don't understand. But whatever. He's going to be sending me pictures Tuesday, Wednesday, something like that. But uh this one should be pretty cool. And uh the neat thing about it, it's a super desirable little boat. So, I'm anxious to see what it looks like. Uh I will say based on the photos that he sent me, it's going to need just a little bit of work. So, let's let's see what we've got going on here. Oh dear.
That's never a good thing when the boat comes in bits and pieces.
Anybody recognize it? Oh dear. Pranged up dive planes. Jesus. All right.
Actually, you know, it looks okay.
I mean, we'll do some bending, get the planes back to proper again. We got fobs, periscopes, a bunch of little set screws, >> a little stand, and a battery charger.
Let's tear into this because in theory there's a cylinder in there. So, here is what we have. This was an easy fix.
These are all fully functional and uh they run with this linkage that snaps in magnetically kind of like that goes up.
Um, this is a uh a a uh Marram/Dryox MSD uh 2.5 watertight cylinder.
the the the whole stern just it fits perfectly right back on there. Just like can't even see the seam. There's going to be problems here though. I'm just We'll fix it. Don't worry about it. Pump control. We've got an automatic pick controller. We've got a remote switch fuse. No battery. There is no battery in here, but we'll get that figured out.
It's that I'm pretty satisfied with it.
I mean, it's going to need some work, but uh it's going to build into a a nice boat. This is a beautiful pool boat. You guys have seen me build these before. I would I would hazard a guess that it could be Marman who did this originally.
David actual Maramman. It looks like his handiwork. Uh I'm just going to take a couple minutes. I want to glue the stern on. I want to test the cylinder real quick and then we'll know where we're at. Well, good news. I found a battery.
a brand new battery. Uh, and we've got all of our functions going on here.
The ballast uh, is working, but I'm not hearing a pump. I can see a pump, but I cannot hear it running.
So, we'll crack into this real quick and just see if there's anything obvious going on. Um, this could in theory run as a gas boat, which wouldn't be a bad thing. Um, we'll see. We'll see if it's an easy fix. Let's see. Okay, so the the the blue back's going to need a little bit of work, but it's going to build back into a beautiful boat. I took this apart. Um, I the 2IS is is an interesting color. It's pretty frosty. I don't know, but it's it's certainly not activating the pump. I did happen to have one spare 2IS, so that could be repaired. Um, I think this is going to I think this is going to be okay. So, customer sent it to me. He wanted me to evaluate it. We're going to put it back together again and just set it aside.
Fortunately, it's small. It won't take up too much room. So, then I can get onto uh the Shark, which is needing to get done. But in the meantime, uh, Logan's doing another unboxing. Do we do we have an idea about which one this is?
Aula, I am. Oh, yeah. Oh.
Oh, that's pretty.
All right. Well, I'm I'm going to let you keep keep doing your what you're doing, and we're going to we're going to go through it. Take a look. I've literally got six giant boxes in my entry way there. um hooked up with a guy out of out of out of China that manufactures all of these. I'm doing some evaluation. I invested in them. I figure worst case scenario, I'll sell them and try and get my money back out of it. Shipping was bare. Very, very, very, very, very expensive. These are going to turn out to be pretty dang nice kits. The same guy that did my gigantic 72nd Oscar. So, let's let's let Logan finish unpacking there. I'll pack up the blue back and then uh we'll revisit him in a minute. Well, here's the uh here's the Aula kit and I got to say I'm pretty darn impressed.
Lower hulls all one piece. I'd be more impressed if they cut drain holes in the files, but you know, whatever.
These are beautiful. Came with two props, a resin prop and a 3D printed aluminum prop.
It it it rings really nicely when you strike it. That's cool. All your periscopes and everything. All of the little details. One little quirk. Uh the sail is hollow, but it's sealed. So, you'd have to just cut the little bottom panel off so that everything would drain. But all the details are really really nice. I don't know if you can see it or not. It's It's really hard to uh to see in this color of resin. This, I believe, is the what they call the It's a high strength resin. There's the white stuff and the green stuff. And the green stuff is supposed to be high strength, quote unquote high strength. Still a resin kit, but man, that's gorgeous. I'm I'm pretty happy with it. Logan's going to pack this up in the original crate, which is super cool. 3/4 inch thick corrugated cardboard. And uh we'll open up the next one and see what else we got. So, Logan got three more boats unpacked. Are there more?
>> Yeah, there's still another two, I guess. So, >> it's all just goodness. You remember what these ones are? We got >> alpha >> alpha in 72nd. And this is uh this looks to be filament printed.
All sorts of good stuff in here.
Yeah. All right. I love 72 for alpha. It is like perfect. And then this is uh French triion fong. Again, super detailed. Lots of cool stuff on here. I love the the fact they have so many reinforcement bulkheads in there to help maintain the shape.
Um tabs and everything to align things.
This is neat though. It shipped with a motor, a brushless motor that lives in the wet and uh fits perfectly in the pump shroud.
This is a cool boat. Um there's all the goodies, all the missile hatches and the sail.
That's a neat boat. You certainly don't see that very often. And then we got the baby Oscar. And it's not really a baby Oscar because it's still freaking massive, but uh it's the baby to my Oscar. And it's got all the same details, all the missile tubes and all of that stuff, all the missile doors and cool things. So yeah, now we got we got a baby Oscar, something a little more feasible. I think this is hundth scale if I'm not mistaken. And then all the decals and everything are are over there. These are pretty cool boats. I regardless, I think somebody's going to want these. And I mean, if you do, let me know. Might save me having to list them. All right, it's Wednesday and uh had some things happen. I was feeling not awesome Sunday night and I was feeling not at all better on Monday and it got really bad on Monday. I had a fever and everything. Took a COVID test. Turned out I got COVID.
Uh my doctor who is awesome hooked me up with some really good drugs which I took yesterday. I woke up this morning feeling much better. Just a little tired now. I didn't get I didn't get any work done in the shop this morning. Um but Logan did. Uh let's let's delve into what he did here. Uh so first thing that he did uh was a little bit of work on the on the on the 212. The um bottom edge of the of the forward hull was hitting and the whole upper hull was uh was about an eighth of an inch from mating perfectly. So, what Logan went ahead and did is uh is cut this back. And it's challenging. He did a good job. So, he took an eighth off the bottom and tapered that down to nothing uh on the top. And now uh all of our vertical lines are lining up. And the seam back here is looking awesome. So, this is this is trundling trundling right along. We glued the top on here, too. That's good. Now, it won't fall off. I got a bunch of cool stuff for this. I'm going to try something a little different. I think this motor, this Apis Queen motor fits perfectly on that shaft.
And uh it it it should fit back here.
I'll just need to mount horns as opposed to yolks in here. The big thing about this is this is only 150 kovts.
So, uh, what I might need to do is, uh, either give it more voltage or or just spin it up and see how it goes. That's a big prop. So, if we're running off of 13 volts off the fully charged, uh, life battery, um, you know, we should get a decent amount of RPMs out of it. I think we'll be okay. And it's a fast, sleek haul anyway.
If not, I could run the two batteries in uh series and give this thing like 24 volts. Then she'd get up and scream just a little bit. I got 100 amp electronic speed controller that I had here as well. So once I sink my teeth into this thing, we'll be in really good shape.
Other thing he did was unpack the last two boats. And these are probably my favorite right up there with the uh Aula that we that we did. Let's start over here. Uh Ohio, 1 100th Ohio. And this thing is freaking gorgeous.
Um like look at the details in the in the missile pods there. And obviously all of the hatches and everything uh are included with this engineered to to be fully operational and and they've got great great detail. Um, the one downfall is it's a resin prop, but it is the high strength stuff and it's pretty tough. I think it'll be fine.
But we got all the resin parts, all of the periscopes and masts and everything.
Uh, it's going to build into a nice boat. And it's got the little uh pod on the back there, which is a nice touch.
This is going to build into a spectacular sub. And uh I'm just trying to see the the whole split is a little different.
This is all one piece which is going to lend a ton of rigidity to it. Uh but the beauty is you don't need to get in here.
There's no die planes. The die planes are up here and you can reach that um just from from right here. And that's all open obviously. So really really easy. But yeah, I think I think this would fit you know an 80 mil cylinder. I don't think this will take our 100. I think this is more like 80. Let's Let's measure. What's our opening look like here? 90. Yeah, that' be perfect for an 80 mil uh single shaft. Um and it's Ohio. I mean, come on now, man. Super cool. And it's significantly cheaper than some of the other options, you know, on the market right now. Uh the other one, which I am going to say I like better because it just looks cooler. The Russians make cool looking submarines. You know, I I apologize to anybody that's got a, you know, a heart on for the American boats, but you can't look at that and just tell me that's a that's an intimidating submarine, you know, like the the shape of the sail and everything. Um, again, you know, you got all the substructure in there. You got all of the missile hatches. And this one comes with a uh a 3D printed aluminum uh impeller that goes in the shroud there, which looks just just cool, you know. Look at that. Um so yeah. Oh, and it comes with the resin one too if you if you just wanted to do a display model. But you know, all these these missile doors and everything just beautiful beautiful detail.
And of course, all engineered and uh rigged up to be fully functional.
So, yeah, that is uh that is Bory. You know, they're they're ICBM uh boat. So, both of these I took some pictures.
We'll get these up online and see if anybody's interested in them. I got to I got a hunch these are going to go.
They're a little pricey. They're they're bigger. You got to understand like this lower part of the hull here is all one piece. There's And then the upper deck is one piece as well. This This is cool.
This is cool. You know, you're not assembling sections. I'm I'm pretty happy with uh with these two boats for sure. Um tri, you know, it's it's a beautiful beautiful boat, but uh it's going to take a little work. You got to glue it all together and do all the filling and sanding and and all of that stuff. But uh it's fine. They're all super awesome. I'm happy with it. I don't know if I'll carry them as regular products. I have these ones. If you do want one, you better let me know cuz if I end up selling it, I don't know. I probably won't get anymore. I don't know. We'll see. One more thing. The baby blue back. The baby blue back is now mine. Uh made a deal with the uh with the owner, so it's almost ready to go. You know, I just got to fix the uh the 2IS uh and then do the final test and trim. So, I will uh go ahead and get that listed up as well. That's uh that's going to be a super fun boat uh for anybody because if you're in a pool situation, you're not going to get any better than that. I'm going to rest up now for the rest of the day, hit the ground running tomorrow, and uh yeah, there was something else I needed to do.
I just got something. What was it? Oh, yeah.
Frank sent the front of the C view. It wasn't supposed to get here till Friday.
And now it got here on Wednesday, which means tomorrow I could chop the front off of the C view. Potentially put that together so it could be all done for when Ed gets here on Friday. I have a lot to do. Oh, one more thing. Super weird situation with the potting here.
This Logan did a super awesome job on this. So, uh, this idea came from Ed. I was potting from the end cuz that was just where my brain was going. He potted his from the top. And this makes a little bit more sense because now you've got access to the reprogram button. So, we put a chimney on here. And then we'll just put a little dollop of uh RTV over the top. So, if you ever need to register or rebind, you just peel that off and then you can do all of that. But what ended up happening, for whatever reason, um when Logan did the the first pour, it didn't all cure. Some of it did, some of it didn't. He figures maybe he didn't stir it enough or something.
So, I poured I dug all that stuff out, put another layer on there. Oh, yeah.
That's good. Ah, perfect. Perfect. Now, I just chopped that chimney off and we'll be ready to go. And then we're ready for paint on the shark. I will do that tomorrow, too. Get the first layers of paint on uh on Dawn, the the mega dial of dawn. Things are going, things are moving, things are shaking. Thanks for your patience. Next week will probably be a better full video, but we'll get as much done as we can. And Ed's going to be here, and that's always a blast. We'll see what we uh, you know, set on fire or blow up when he gets here. First day back in the shop in a couple days because of the wonderfulness of CO. Um, but we're going we got cool stuff going on. We packed up some orders, which is not cool. That's kind of boring, actually. Now we're on to Now we are on to the cool stuff. Shark is being uh reassembled and tested.
Everything is fully functionalized. Uh bolted it back together and we're starting the paint. We got uh a nice white belly on there. And then we'll flip it, mask it, gray it, weather it, and then as it's all drying, Logan's going to be doing some tooth dental work. Getting some some white on there.
And then we'll do a wash with some blood, black eyeballs, black nostrils.
Uh get this thing looking like a shark.
Once once it's painted, it should be done. Final test in the pool and uh off to the races. One thing I'm considering, and maybe Logan, you got input on this.
You know how it it really wants to dive, right?
>> Yeah.
>> What if we were to put some clear adjustable fins on the back to draw the tail down just a little bit?
>> As long as they're kind of small and subtle, it should be fine.
>> Yeah. If they're clear, they would disappear in the water.
It would give a lot more flexibility to the operation because these center fins only control depth, not pitch.
So these would, you know, being so far off the center would allow for pitch control, actual pitch control, dynamic pitch control. I'll I'll put some thought into that. It would be easy to do. And if and if the guy doesn't like it, you just pull them off and don't run with them. Um, he is, as I told you guys, going to run this in both freshwater and brackish water. Um, if he goes in brackish, he's going to have to do all sorts of rebalancing because the trim's going to be all off. So, he may like just to run that on the surface in that case. But, uh, you know what? I'm going to mess around with that for a few minutes. But, in the meantime, Logan is, uh, testifying the motor that I selected for the big 212 right there. It's an Apis Queen. I showed it to you guys earlier. It's an Apis Queen, 150 kilovolt. So, I'm worried it's not going to have the revolutions that we're after, but it's a big prop. So, I'm just going to have a gut feeling when we hook it up and give it the gusto. This is sharp as like a blender. It's crazy.
Hopefully, nobody touches it. The reason I like this is cuz it literally just bolts right on the shaft as it is. I wouldn't have to do anything and it can live in the back and I can run separate linkages so they won't interfere with it. So, I am hopeful that this works, but he's going to rig it all up on 12 volts and uh we'll see how she spins.
All right, we're set to we're set to go here. Give her give her the slow juices.
Yeah, that's that is moving some air.
>> I can feel that from here. Yeah, I think I think that's going to be okay. And man, is that ever smooth and quiet.
Okay, good. I was worried, but I guess it didn't need to be.
All right, cool. I guess what I need to do is take some dimensions of the motor and take that, load it in, and make a uh a mounting bracket for this thing.
Super cool, man. Well, that makes me happy. Well, it's time to break for breakfast and uh get back to work. have missed the last two days because of being sick. So, that's going to be super exciting. But, um, we got good progress going on here. Uh, let me let me show you the shark. Belly's white, top is gray. I did just a bunch of misting with, uh, with chocked, with primer, with with C view gray. And, uh, this is what it's like, you know, you you don't want a solid color. You want it modeled.
And so you do a lot of like misting and stuff in this direction to preserve the the the pink in the gills. Um I think once this gets gets all dry and and Logan does the black and the nostrils and the eye and then the white on the teeth and the bloody wash on the gums, this guy this guy's going to be looking mean. I think tomorrow, well, when Ed gets here, we'll be able to throw it in the water.
So, we'll let this thing cook off here for a little bit. Logan's going to continue work on the 212 and uh then we'll figure something else for him to do. It's Friday and we're excited because the shark is pretty well done and ready for testing. Logan's working on a on a different project we're going to show you in a minute. And I am excited cuz Ed's going to be here later on and we're going to have a good time. We're going to fix that C view together. Uh, put the new nose on. Maybe head to storage and grab some cool stuff that I sold. If you're a Dive Tribe member, you got notified of it. It was a huge pre-subfest sale. Liquidated stuff for like pennies on the dollar. We're almost there, people. Uh, let's take a look at the shark. This is how Dawn turned out. Logan did a great job with the teeth and the eyeballs and the nostrils, and we bloodied up his mouth a little bit. Looks pretty vicious, I have to say. Um, it's all ready for testing.
Only thing we need to do is, uh, pop the bottom tray off. Um, take the tape off the drain hole, plug it in, and chuck it in the water. Just something else we could do. And Ed's here. I have a big big list of stuff. And then this will be done. We need to figure out how we're going to pack and ship it to the uh to the customer. And then what do we got? I don't think we've showed this to people in a long time. What do we got going on here?
>> I think the last time we had an update on this was last year, and that was around the time that I loved the Pisces model, which is the boat here. So, I wanted to make something cool with it. And that's when I saw your video from nine years ago on Nautilus and Stormy Seas. So, I wanted to make something similar. So, this is my project that I came back to after a year of kind of leaving it alone. But, this is going to be the Pisces in Calm Waters. We're going to good try our hand at at water modeling again or lo Logan is. I'm going to watch. But the What's the whole idea? Well, if you crinkle up the or this here uh clear uh printer sheet, you can get this kind of wavelike effect. And anywhere that you have the high points on the waves so that it doesn't just look like crinkled plastic, you add a bit of white glue. And that gives it the uh white cap effect from well waves. And by using that, you can hide seams and you can add a nice little gentle water effect without too much hassle.
>> Yeah. So, we're And and it just happened to work out that the sheets are almost the perfect width, right?
>> Yeah. I mean, I'd say it's within like a millimeter, which means if I just use some like gelcier, it should uh expand enough to hold it.
>> All right, we'll keep our fingers crossed. All right, let's see what we can come up with for for this thing. I promised Logan we'd work on a little bit this morning because we can't test the shark because it's pitch black outside.
Um, while he goofs around with that though, I'm going to move the C view in so we can start dissectifying, chopping, and uh, completely rebuilding.
Uh, and otherwise, perfect submarine. We have the C view out. I don't think this is going to be bad. I don't think. Here is the existing 8 window version, which is the wrong version for what the customer ordered. This is the correct four- window version that the customer did want. that that old Frank cut right off of his own personal boat to make this whole situation right. So the seam that we're going for is right here. So what we need to do is split this perfectly.
Uh glue that on, fiberglass it, and we're done. In theory, you know, it sounds simple, but uh we'll we'll see how it goes. Now, we need to choose our weapon of choice. So, as it turns out, after trying just a couple things, uh my weapon of choice, uh is actually my little uh my little uh my little hacksaw. Um what I like about it, it's not electric. It's not moving quickly.
It's not going to melt the plastic, and it cuts through this stuff really nicely. So, what I did, I traced to the perfect line with the masking tape and used that as a guide to go right down the middle of the uh the seam there. So, we're going to do that same on the other side. Knock it off. Square it up perfectly. Mount that. And uh in theory, that's what we just need to do. So, let me let me get this other side done and we'll see what we have to work with. CPU surgery progressing. Well, it's been split. So, we got the new head on and the uh the seam is nice and smooth. Just little gaps that'll be easily filled with a little bit of filler. And we'll do uh you know, lay up of fiberglass over the seam to make sure there's no issues. Uh use some brass alignment pins to make sure that everything is is square there. So, yeah, we'll we'll get this down and uh permanently adhere it with that fiberglass. Look who's here.
Ed May made it. And he's brought he's brought toys. We're going to we're going to look at that stuff in a minute, but I'm in the middle of fiberglassing. I just want to show you what I got going on. So, I've bonded up the uh interfaces here so that there's a a rounded interface and not a sharp 90° to trap air bubbles. Um, and this is the 3/4 ounce cloth that I'm using. It's just like tissue paper. It wets out like crazy.
So, all you do is wet out the inside on both sides over what you're trying to do.
And then I just go like this.
Squish it on. And that's it. You just wet it out. And look, it just disappears.
You don't even need to like tamp it very much. It's pretty cool.
And this will just make sure that there's no chance of the nose falling off.
Um, well, very small chance of the nose falling off. Uh, if there's horse put on it, >> you you you make that look too easy. Had I done that, there'd be resin all over the model, the floor, the table, my hair, the dog.
Oh, yeah. Just wet it down. Pick it up with the brush. Put it >> Yeah. Well, that's >> It's not my first time at this rodeo.
>> So, we'll let we'll let this kick off and I'm going to do some sandifications on the outside. And this is just done.
Yay. C view is curing. We got some more filler on the on the bottom there.
That's going to be done. That that literally did not take me very much time. Maybe maybe an hour from the very start to where we're going to be done.
It was fine. The surgery was successful.
But now, as part of the deal with Steve, I got a couple boats and they're pretty cool. I have to admit, there's just a small amount of PTSD going on looking at this right now, but hopefully it'll be all right. So, this is an Angle of Germany 212.
The uh ill-faded 212 is a a version of this. This boat does not have periscopes.
That's cool. I just one more thing to go wrong. I want to pop it open. I want to see what the equipment tray looks like because it's one thing for a boat to look good on the outside, but the true test is what does it look like on the inside.
Man, I forget how heavy these things are.
>> What's underneath the hood?
>> This is typical angle, too. The tray catches on all the weights. Yeah. Looks new.
Clean. We got nice little power distribution block going on there. We got a TDR6 receiver set up for Free Sky. So, I'll be pairing this up with uh with an X18.
And oh, there's our batteries. 212 Z. Oh, 4200 milliamps. So, yeah. I guess uh just got to get a radio, do the pairing thing, and check it. Make sure it works. I don't need to know how it works. I just need to make sure it works before I sell it, but I need a radio for this and I need a radio for this. So, this is standard Engle 212 that I am intimately familiar with now. So, feel pretty confident we'll get this thing going.
Um, let's put it back together again and then we'll look at the 23. All right, here is the 23 and this is the Bronco 35th scale type 23. Beautiful kit.
Whoever painted this up, they did a good job. I will say they got a little sloppy with the with the limber holes, with the drain holes in the in the deck, but it just it looks like it was handone, you know, by by some German drunk on German beer.

>> Yeah, schnopsis.
>> His cutting torch wandered a little, but this is the uh I'm going to assume one of the early versions of the Maximus model bow. uh conversion kits. This is a piston tank system and uh with a bayonet connection in the back, which is pretty cool. I don't know much about it. I'm going to learn everything along with you guys. Uh again, TD R six receiver, so I just got to grab another X18. So, both of these boats are going to come with top-of-the-line radios.
Um, it does not look like the forward dive planes are rigged up for operation, which is not a big deal because we got nice big control surfaces in the back.
Um, I think it's going to be just fine.
And it's going to turn on a dime. These things really really perform well because this rudder, big rudder directly behind the the propeller. Like tomorrow or whenever we feel up to it, I'll grab a couple of radios, pair them up, try and figure channels out, and we'll just see if they work, you know? it. You know what'll happen? We'll throw we'll we'll get them rigged up. We'll throw them in the pool. They'll just work right off the bat and that'll never happen. You know where we are.
We're at the top secret uh test facility. And um you saw us test out this uh this massive motor and massive prop on the bench and we did a feel test for air movement, but Ed's like, "Why don't we just throw it in the water and we'll see what it moves." So, we're we're gonna blenderize my uh my spa.
This is about as redneck a setup as you can get. Wires everywhere. All right.

You got to understand, too, these uh these scimitar props are far less efficient in reverse than they are in forward. So, it'll it'll actually push way more water in that forward direction. But before we can do any of that testing, I got to grind a flat, do set screws, and all of the stuff to retain it on the shaft. And good morning, Saturday, bright and early, 9:00. But we've been busy. We've been doing stuff.
And there I had a complication last night. I got for the first time in 15 years a case of the hiccups at dinner.
and they didn't go away for two hours after like onto bed and then I got a case in the middle of the night. They kept me up and then we just went out for breakfast and I got him again. So I have like recurring >> doesn't work.
>> I don't have a hiccup. So we'll see.
Anyhow, complication. But we've had a busy morning. We've done breakfast. We went to Denny's. Hit storage bay. We got a whole bunch of stuff shipping out from my Super Subfest sale that all of you guys were aware of because you're a member of the dive tribe, right? And you got that preliminary special pricing, but elected not to take advantage of it.
Um, so we did all of that. I got a bunch of stuff from storage, old OTW parts that is going to be in embedded into the 212. And now we've decided we're going to go test the shark. So, uh, we're gonna we're gonna head out to the top secret test facility, fire it up, and, uh, see if it'll work. Okay, change of plans. We brought the shark outside, try to fire it up. And one of the motors is not happy.
So, it needs work, which means we need to work on it, which means we need a place to work on it, which means we've got to get this out of here. So, we're going to do some sanding, finish that up, and then we can get Can we put it in your truck?
>> What? Yeah, sure. when we're done.
>> Don't melt in there. Sure.
>> We can put it back in the dining room.
It'll be fine.

>> Yeah, I believe it. It's Texas. It's hot and humid out already and it's only 9:00. All right, time to sand the C view. Shark has been repaired. It was a faulty ESC. That was the one that we tore apart earlier. So, I don't know.
You know, could have been anything. We put a brand new one in. It's fully functionalized now.
So, we're going to bolt it back together and head out to the top secret test facility once again. Of course, now that it's 185° and 90% humidity, >> we'll go jump in with the shark.
>> Yeah. Get some cool footage. It's not a bad idea. Top secret test facility. Once again, we've got Dawn the Shark ready to go. Um, you guys remember I added these stern deflectors here and it has a tendency to dive. So, what I'm going to do, I'm just going to give them a little up angle and we're going to see if that helps straighten them out, make them a little more controllable under the water. You can mess around with them and and it's fine, but we're going for perfection here or something remotely close. So, let's drop it in and see what happens. All right, boys and girls.

I mean, he's nice and deep right now, but if you can adjust the speed. Yeah.
Yeah, that's it. So, so the trick is to play with the speed.
>> Yeah. to get just the the the infamous dorsal fin sticking out of the water. So, Shark was working perfect until Shark wasn't working and uh I think we killed the battery. We brought it back in and it was reading like a really low voltage. So, we got it on the charger. Hopefully, that's all it was.
But, it was working awesome until then, right?

>> We have it on tape. It's on got video evidence. What we're going to do now, unpack these two brand new X18s, pair them up to these boats, and just see what works and what doesn't work. Um, in theory, the 212 is supposed to be almost ready to go. I just got to tighten up all the crazy little linkages in the back cuz all the die planes are loose.
And uh try out the Maximus boat cuz I have no idea how that works.
and uh you know just throw it in the water and see what happens. I don't think we're going to get it in the water. Just as a warning, I don't think we're going to be to that point, but we're at least going to make them do the things when you move the sticks. So, we're doing good progressives. We got we got the 23 all set up with the uh the radios all paired up. The only problem is it's not getting the telemetry and we ran into this before. So, I think the radio needs to be updated. They're brand new radios. They need to be updated to the latest firmware. Got the 212 all going up. And we found out the coolest thing, right, Ed? About the ballast system.
>> It's uh it's fully proportional. So, we got it on a slider here. So, you can literally set the ballast wherever you want. Now, >> it's like a little bit useful. The problem is it's a single tank. So, as it draws in, it's going to go heavy on the nose and then settle down. So, you could stop it halfway, but then you're going to be cockeyed. you know, dubious use, but still pretty cool. Um, we found out we were trying to tighten the linkages inside. We couldn't figure out why these rudders kept moving. It's because they're not glued on in the shafts. So, what I did is I've glued or drilled a little 16th hole. We're going to put these in place and do a little thin CA in there to lock them on the shafts.
So, we've had all kinds of excitement here in the last couple of minutes. Kirk stopped by because he was looking to dump another project. But look what I got. It's a I I don't even know what block that is. I It must be block two, maybe. Virginia ABS. It is sweet. I don't know what he printed that on, but it is smooth.
Really nice. So, I mean, I'm not keeping it. I'm not doing anything with it. I'll relist it and sell it. But look for that coming up here right away. And then look who else showed up. Another one, >> Nathan.
And uh he's brought his um submarine aircraft carrier. Why don't we give me two seconds? We're going to finish doing this thing updating the softwares and suches and then we're you give us a tour.

All right. And it was printed >> much thicker and much heavier. And so I redid it, made some changes to the files, cleaned some stuff up, um, and then printed it in ASA with a much lighter upper section. Um, the same lower section and made some other modifications.

>> So, uh, thruster driven, just those same green thrusters you guys use in the Shark. And, um, what do we call these things?
>> Like nozzles.
>> Nozzle. Yeah. So, we just added nozzles.
That's Bob's suggestion there. So, we'll try that. They're not hooked up yet, but um you know, real real simple installation there. Put a rod in. Boom.
Good to go. Does have four planes. Just don't have those up yet. Um these are fixed, although the files to make it where you possibly could. Somebody, probably not me, could possibly make a move.
Um to get into it, I made a little uh hatch back here with a latch and then I put a bolt in. So, just the one bolt the whole thing off and then a latch up front and hopefully that's enough to hold it, but I could always I did put pin options in there. I don't think we'll need them. Lots of space inside.
Went with waterproof servos just to make it easy front and back. Um, and then the thrusters go in here. Wires will come out. Come to the watertight cylinder. We talked about the ballast keeping it low.
So, I did the Ulysus mod >> here. Hopefully this will be good. The lipo battery up front, no lie, I'm really worried about it being extremely heavy in the front, but it could even sail horribly. You could Who knows? It's all made up. U all I got all the watertight all the the water important stuff in this one little box. So that's really good. These little circles >> S3 watertight boxes in theory rated to 80 ft.
>> This is the 250, not the 350. So it's the middle size.
>> Middle size. Yeah. Yeah. So, I was going with a bigger one. Didn't need it, so kept it small. Um, so underneath just the fast 40.
>> Mhm.
>> And some wire connectors. So, on top we got our pump, two switches here for the ballast, and then our TDSR12, and our two speed controllers. Everything basically comes out in bullet connectors on the outside.
>> Mhm.
>> Um, and so in theory, it'll work absolutely excellently, but in practice, there's no telling. It looks good though. It'll be nice and clean. And I wouldn't worry about the the weight because we've got acres of place to put foam in here. And this is all below the water line. So, not a problem.

>> No promises for a beautiful paint job, but in the water subfest.
>> The paint job I'd be the least amount worried you can knock out a good paint job in a day. So, this is going to look super cool in the in the water. And the and the idea cuz I don't I don't think we touched on it. It is a >> aircraft carrier.
>> Aircraft carrier. Some some marining aircraft carrier.
>> So yeah, launching off. We'll see. So I did make provisions for LEDs in these strips right here.
>> No promises for subfest, >> but it I got I think I have the LEDs. I don't know. We'll see. We got to get in the water. See if it even floats and all that stuff first.
>> And I was I was joking with him. Like we should we should rig it up on a servo so that when you hit the servo, a little door opens up and a little plane goes.
>> Should be doable. Should we do >> I think it'd be cool. Of course, the other option is it could not only launch aircraft. It could launch mini subs.

>> Should have like an under hull launcher for submarines.
>> Yeah.
>> Not that anybody would ever see that, but you'd know it was there.

>> What'll be interesting is to understand how the water plays over the sloped surfaces and the wings and what it does for control and all that stuff. But so what do we what do we got going on here now? We've got two three things to to test. So, we got the 212, we got the 23, and we got the Shark. The Shark's already been tested, but we need to get some footage of it. Uh, the 212, everything's functional except the pitch control.
>> Pitch control seems blocked.
>> It's well, it's just not working.
>> Nonoperational.
>> Yeah, like all the control surfaces are working perfectly fine. Just the pitch control is not engaging. 23.
Everything is perfectly functional. But apparently uh Steve guy I got it from said that he is encountering massive difficulties in trimming. So we're going to see what we can come up with from a trimmification procedure uh to get it trimmed. It's a lot of rubber bands. All right. Well, figure out what we're going to do and head outside.
What the hell?

>> Yeah. Lean towards a bad battery, but at the same time, the song really stumbling block with a Shark. Now, I don't remember if I recorded or not. You guys probably remember more than me, but we swapped the battery out before in the Shark because we ran into a problem. And we thought it was a faulty battery.
We've been percolating here because we charged up the battery. It lasted for >> 2 minutes.
>> 2 minutes maybe and then it died.
We checked the voltage on the battery.
We're at 8.6 volts right now. Fully charged should be like 14. And we just charged it.
So here's our thought. You know, I may have made an assumption that this is a fully sealed enclosure, and I think that that assumption is incorrect. So, inside here are obviously all the cells, but there's also the battery management unit. So, what we're going to do is attempt to burn the shop down and cut this open. Uh there's only one seam around the outside. Uh, I'm gonna cut it open carefully and see if water is getting inside. And if so, then the solution could simply be in a new battery to seal around this seam and we should be in good shape. If not, I know for a fact this sealed lead acid battery will work at half the capacity at about maybe the same weight. But at the very least, you're gonna see us cut into a battery and potentially uh set shop on fire. So, let's see how that goes.

>> Yes. You can see all the corrosion and everything already going on. I'm thinking it's still viable, but uh we just simply need to seal around the uh the seam. Yeah. Okay. Living and learning. Should still work, right? I don't see why we couldn't use these batteries.

>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's like there's like filled up to here.
>> Yeah. Give it a blow. We're not blowing it out.

>> Yeah, this is this battery shot. It's right it's it's at 8.8 volts and it was actually coming up over time probably as the board dried out. Um, and you know, the the other thing when the when the battery is in the shark, it's upside down. So, when the water comes in, that board is sitting in the water.
Yeah, >> that's why it happened so fast.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
All right. Well, that's garbage. We're going to take a new battery, seal it up, reinstall it, retest it. But in the meantime, probably got other boats that we can test, too. So, we're we're we're going to be fully discharging this. We got a little electric motor hooked up there, and we're just going to let that thing run all night until it doesn't spin anymore, just for safety.

So many times people are like, "I need to send my submarine back to you because I don't know why it's not working."
But when you start at the beginning of a system and work your way through it step by step, eventually you'll find what the problem is.

It's very powerful. You could Well, you could actually hear it at the end of the stroke like when it was pulling that much vacuum, you know?

>> Like it has to go through that bulkhead, right? Could it have got like twisted or something?

>> It's only coming I can only push it in 3/4 of an inch.
>> Wow. So yeah, somebody needs to be harassed. So we figured out that there was a stoppage in the uh in the stern right here about 3/4 of an inch back.
And without having to undo all of this and put everything in there and all that stuff, we figured out there must have been a big loop of hose cuz this should only be this long. But we've got about 2 in or 2 and 1/2 in of extra hose. So, it was kinkedked and blocked. But now I can blow through this, no problem.
And we can push our rod through. Cut this, slip that, put that, connect that, and we're good. The I think it was a a build step error. or whoever put this together. Um, you connect the hose, keep it tight, and then connect up here at the at the uh >> They probably put it together first, then assemble it.

>> And that's what's tough about blind assemblies like that.
