Exhaust system sound quality depends on proper flow dynamics and pipe diameter progression; a larger rear section (57mm) compared to a smaller front section (42mm) allows exhaust gases to flow more freely and produce a better tone, while the front section restricts flow and creates a quieter sound. The system must be designed to allow proper breathing throughout its entire length to achieve the desired acoustic characteristics.

Almost a sports systemHinzugefügt:
Some of you watch the videos and think, "Wow, I wouldn't mind that on my car."
Whether it's a thumping great V8 or a little pocket rocket or whatever you have.
Another good reason for having videos.
This gentleman came in the other day inquiring. I said, "I've got one to show you."
And you've seen it probably.
Uh Hyundai Getz. Uh gave it a gave it a little bit of street muscleness.
If you can do that with the Getz.
This one has 169,849 km on the very, very digital odometer. Cuz it says odo, so it's got to be an odometer.
>> [snorts] >> All right. I'm going to get it up in the air.
And we're not going to do as much as we did last time. So, hang in there. This will be interesting.
It's a partial sports build.
What do we like now?
Mhm. I'm led to believe things have been unbolted partway just to make it some sound.
Not real good when there's a fuel tank there.
All right. We'll make it up in the air and we'll see what goes on.
Either way, we do have another DOHC motor because it's it's not a SOHC.
Not S O H C. Double overhead cam.
16-valve, fuel-injected, and we have got the shock protector, aka life support, installed. There will indeed be some welding.
All right. Let's have a look underneath.
Okay, we have got the 1.6 L DOHC motor, not the 1.4. So, let's all hit that raise him up and away we go button.
Oh, these come up considerably quicker with little cars on them.
Well, the original equipment muffler still there, but and I hate saying this, little spaces put between the plates blowing out hot gases.
What's that?
This is a fuel tank. Not a good idea.
Now, gentleman wanted to go from here like the other one.
Uh, that can't happen today for reasons beyond my control and perhaps later on the gentleman will come back when he can and will make the front part.
At the moment, just going to make the rear.
Still going to have the small front on it. It will change the sound.
And uh, we'll see how it goes. Now, if he expects it to sound way, way different to a leaking exhaust, yeah, it will.
It'll probably be quieter than it is now, but a better tone.
That's quite frankly it's just leaking everywhere at the moment.
Well, the old one's off and most of the new ones up there sitting on the uh, newly refurbished fan.
Rack it up, but of course not painted yet.
Onto the new plates.
The same sort of stud pattern as Ford Falcon. So, that's convenient because I just sort of stopped the video there for a sec and draw your attention to the fact that the rear section is now being built in 57 mm.
The front section is still only 42, so it's very small.
For the sound to get from the engine in its robustness, if that's a proper word, through to the rear, it's got to get through all that small stuff.
Now, due to I'll just call it limited finances today, the gentleman could not have what he wanted in its entirety because well, things cost money.
Uh, if you've got X amount of money, you want to do something, but you can't do everything, this is the way to do it. Get it in preparation for the front. When the front's done, that's when all the great sound will really happen. This will be a quiet system, but have a look at the big difference between that 57 mil at the back and the 42 mm at the front.
Vastly different, but all set up, ready to go, and very quickly and easily make that front section at a later date.
The front part will be in and out in an hour. Job done.
All right. Back to the video.
So, that's convenient because we are doing this in 57 mm or 2 and 1 1/4 in.
So, the last bracket will be made after the top hops in place. It does need to come down cuz these do not have a large cutout in there. They They angle down.
Coming along nicely indeed.
As you may see, yeah, there's the chambering in there. You can just see through to the inlet pipe and two layers of fiberglass, one at the front and one towards the back.
And that's tucked up nice and high, so without the cut open or cut away, it does need to come down this way and then just cut it off neatly.
As you can see at idle, it is not overly loud at all.
And that's because the next section has not been replaced yet.
But the customer can get around to doing that in his own good time.
And it's still only 42 mm in the front.
So, all of that open goodness is still being restricted by the front, but it's a damn sight safer than having it wide open to the atmosphere right beside a fuel tank.
We'll drop it down and give it a couple of little light revs. This is an automatic 1.6 double overhead cam.
There is your sound test with a few revs through it.
So, when the front's opened up a bit more, uh that's going to be very, very good indeed.
It just needs that depth coming into it to be able to refine the sound to get it out the back.
Uh it's a bit like people trying to put a huge tip on the back of an exhaust system and thinking it's going to change a massive amount of sound. It doesn't happen.
If it's blocked it up, it's blocked up.
Now, this isn't blocked.
It's OE design, OE fitment, but we've freed up the back. And later on, they can have it so it really breathes nicely, just like the red one a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks for watching. Comment, like, share, please.
Trying to get it up. Been a bit quiet in the workshop, but then we're going on the street.
No traffic, no nothing.
Mhm, must be something in the water.
See you.
