Evil Dead Wrath, a 2028 prequel set in 1972, will embrace classic horror filmmaking techniques including practical effects, tungsten lighting, and Ektachrome 100 film stock to create a gritty, isolated atmosphere that contrasts with the modern digital aesthetic of Evil Dead Burn, which will feature tracking shots and urban settings.

Why EVIL DEAD WRATH Is NOTHING Like Evil Dead Burn
Added:We are just a few weeks away from Evil Dead Burn hitting movie theaters on July 10th, but after that in 2 years on April 7th of 2028, we're getting Evil Dead Wrath. And now we're starting to learn more information about that and just how different it's going to be from Burn.
Let's talk about it.
>> [music] >> Hello everyone, welcome to Digital Shark Crew. My name is James. Thank you so much for stopping by. If you're looking forward to the future of the Evil Dead, hit that subscribe button because I talk about it and discuss with you guys right here on the channel. I can't wait for Evil Dead Burn, but Evil Evil Dead Wrath is 2 years away. Wait, originally supposed to come out in uh next year in 2027, they pushed it even further to April of 2028.
I guess to give some breathing room from Burn. Who knows, maybe some post work that needs to be done. And now as we learn more information from producer Robert Tapert via Dread Central online, we're learning that maybe there is going to be quite a bit of post-production needed for this film for Evil Dead Wrath because it is a prequel to the entire franchise. I guess, you know, Army of Darkness kind of goes back. But it takes place in 1972 and I kind of find that very intriguing and I love the idea about that because we're getting Burn, we got Rise and we got Evil Dead 2013. We got those modern-day great and then of course the originals. But we got those modern-day.
But now you take us back to the '70s, a time that predates cell phones, predates internet. It is the era of fear and tension and helplessnessness and helplessnessness and helplessness helplessness because you there was nowhere to go. There was no one to talk. You couldn't just pick up your phone and call. It you're you're all alone and you're isolated and it sounds like they're going to bring them back maybe not to a cabin in the woods, but to a very isolated environment.
Whereas Evil Dead Burn looks like it's going to take on an entire city and town or street at least, This movie seems like it's going to be very isolated and they're going to bring you back in and they're going to make it very claustrophobic once again. But, what I love about this is they're not just making a 1972 and being and making you say, "Hey, look. This is 1972. Look at the clothes they wear. They're wear They're dressed crazy." They're actually using lenses specific to that era. And in fact, the lighting is going to look much different than a modern movie. It's going to be very tungsten, very warm.
They're actually using a film stock known as an Ektachrome 100, which was very popular in that era. And if you know me, I love the look of film. It is grittier, it is nastier than digital.
And I think old movies and old movies like 20-plus-year-old movies, I think they look just a little bit nicer because they're not as clean, because they're not as crisp. And a horror movie, that gives it even more of an edge to a film.
It just has that little bit of grain, a little bit of dirt to it. And this look is going to add to that. And I can't wait. And you juxtapose that with what we're getting in Evil Dead Rise, where it's going to be digital, very glossy.
And I love what they're doing there with the tracking shots. We We had a clip a little while ago where it was a bird's-eye view of the deadites attacking the family. We saw the teaser where it's a one-er of Alice crawling around the house as deadites fighting and attacking behind her. I love that they're going to go side-by-side. And in the 1972 Rise movie, it's getting even closer to like a Friday the 13th in terms of what they're doing. As the producer Tapert even said that there's going to be a lot more like kids being kids and sex being played out and probably drugs and things like that that you got from a more traditional slasher film. But, I don't think that Evil Dead Rise will be a traditional slasher film in any sense. I think this is going to be a film where we're going to get to know these characters, we're going to get to love these characters, and then they're going to rip these characters away from us. And I'm really curious how they're going to get to the Necronomicon, if it is in fact the Necronomicon, or if it's going to be a different book altogether. We know there are multiple books. Or is it going to be like Burn Ward? Looks like it's just pages thrown together by somebody's writing. I'm half hoping it is the Necronomicon from the originals, but I'm also half hoping that it is a new one that we haven't seen yet. We maybe we get the origin of one of the newer ones as well. And I wonder if we're going to get any nods to Professor Knowby, like at all. If they're going to go into it, if they're going to explain a little bit more about how he got the Necronomicon in this, you know, his whole discovering the Necronomicon, Ex-Mortis, and the Kandarian Dagger, the runes of Castle Kandar, and then bringing them to the cabin to basically. Like I wonder if we're going to see any of that or hear any of that. If they're going to focus on that. Or like I said, maybe it's a different book altogether. But I just feel like there's so much that they can play with here that hasn't been explored. And I would like to see a little bit more of that. And I am curious how far they're going to go into the horror, into the gore, and all that in this film with the film and trying to make it look like an old movie like that. Like are they going to make it the uh the Deadites going to look digitally enhanced at all? Is the blood going to be digitally enhanced? How much did they do practically on set versus how much they're going to do in post? Because you could do a lot practically and then touch it up in post and that would still look flawless like a 1972 film. But if you do too much of it in post, you're going to take away from that. Evil Dead Rise is said to be one of like there's going to be a director's cut of this thing that's going to be even scarier than what you're going to get in the theater because there was some stuff they could not add to Evil Dead Rise that was going to get an NC-17 rating. And they said, "We have to trim these things back to make it hard R for the audience to get to a wider release."
But they're promising that when it does hit online, whether it's DVD, DVD, 4K, Blu-ray, whatever, streaming, there will be the director's cut that is going to be a lot gorier, a lot harder, a lot scarier than what we're getting in the theater. And that's what makes me curious about Evil Dead Rise. Is they kind of know the parameter I mean I'm sure they know them going in, but now they know more of the parameters of what the MPAA is going to be looking at in terms of an Evil Dead movie going to NC-17. So they can probably tone that back before they get to that part. But, I just had this feeling that this movie is not going to be as It's going to be gruesome. I want to I'm not saying it's not, but I don't think it's going to be as gruesome as Evil Dead Burn. I think it's going to It's going to be gruesome, like I said, but I think it's going to be more character-driven, more plot-focused than Evil Dead Burn. I think there's going to be a lot more nuance to Evil Dead Wrath. I'm not saying it's going to be a better movie.
I think I'm really excited for Evil Dead Burn, and I don't want to undermine that at all. That's not what I'm doing, but Evil Dead Burn, it looks like it is serving a a specific purpose, and I think Evil Dead Wrath is serving another purpose, and I think that's what I'm loving about this franchise and how it's progressing forward without Sam Raimi, without Bruce Campbell, that we are getting different filmmakers to come in and give their perspectives, their input into the franchise themselves. So, you're taking it on, you're still having this singular continuity, but it feels different, almost like an anthology, but within itself, and I love that aspect of it. And that's how they can continue to keep this fresh for the years ahead is just have fresh eyes come in and revamp it as they want and give each film a 1970s feel or a modern 2020s feel, and both of them, hopefully, being very good and very entertaining and very scary at the same time, but serving different purposes within that scare and within the lore of the franchise itself.
There's so much lore that they can play with, that they can develop on, and that they can utilize that I think it makes sense to do a 1972 one as well. And I think I think the the terror from the 1972 is going to be more in that isolation claustrophobic feel. Where you There's no outside help. There's no chance of help. Where I think in the modern one, in Burn, it's going to be more in your face, gore, slasher, and all that. I think that's how they're going to play around with that. I think there's going to be more tension in Evil Dead Wrath than there will be in Evil Dead Burn, and that's why I'm not going to compare I'm not going to say one's going to be better than the other. I haven't seen either, obviously, but I hope they're both I hope they are both equally as good, but I think And going to get different versions of the Evil Dead world with both of them, and I'm hoping that they're both fantastic and I cannot wait to see them. July 10th, April 7th of 2028.
Woo, we got some time to go, but I'll be talking about them, discussing them right here. What are your thoughts on all of this?
