[00:05:23]They became really close really quickly [music] and moved into her shared apartment together.

[00:05:32][music] The future looks bright again and for the next few years [music] it is.

[00:05:39]But Nirage is living with a secret.

[00:05:44]Manisha wasn't the only woman in Naja's life when [music] they were living together.

[00:05:49]>> Naja's parents were actively looking for a new spouse for him. [music] >> Her new Romeo is seeing another woman virtually back in India.

[00:08:13]Manisha must [music] have been absolutely devastated.

[00:08:17]Her man was going to marry somebody else in Chicago, Illinois.

[00:08:30]Geraldine Smith thinks the arrival of her baby [crying] will finally convince lover Louisa Macdonald to leave his family.

[00:08:43]She gave birth to a baby boy which she named Louisa Macdonald Jr. in an anticipation that uh someday soon that Louisa McDonald would be divorcing Valerie McDonald and coming to stay with her.

[00:08:58]I want to speak to Louisa.

[00:09:01]>> But her plan backfires.

[00:09:09]>> Once the [music] child was born, Louisa McDonald stopped coming by so often.

[00:10:18]>> Good. Geraldine Smith had said she'd pay $500 for the shooting.

[00:10:26]Life isn't worth a whole lot to some people.

[00:10:38]>> After living with Narrage Dav for 18 months, Manisha Patel [music] is being usurped.

[00:10:44]>> It's delicious. Her love rival is about to arrive from India.

[00:10:51]But Manisha shows no anger.

[00:10:55]She even helps Nirage set up house for his bride to be.

[00:11:34]When Pervy arrives, Manisha must make way.

[00:11:53]>> I certainly don't think Manisha gave any indication to him about how she was feeling. She bottled it up inside.

[00:12:10]As soon as Pervy arrives, Manisha is out of the picture.

[00:12:16]Nirage settles down to [music] a new life with his new fiance, 28-year-old Pervy Joshy. [music] >> I love it.

[00:12:25]>> Yes, I love it. I love it.

[00:12:41]>> [cheering] >> Don't worry, it's just me.

[00:12:48]>> But Manisha isn't giving up.

[00:12:57]>> The fact that Nirage was now living with his bride to be didn't stop Manisha from loving him or trying to be with him.

[00:13:06]What's wrong?

[00:13:08]>> Her friend's in trouble.

[00:13:09]>> Manisha was keeping in close contact with Nirage. She was phoning him and texting [music] him.

[00:13:22]Manisha meets her replacement.

[00:13:35]Pervy had no idea Manisha existed, but Manisha knew all about Pervy. Seeing Nirage and Pervy together just came to crystallize for her just how desperate her situation was.

[00:13:51][music] On July 30th, 2013, Manisha is up earlier than usual.

[00:14:01]Ostensibly, she was getting up that early to go to work.

[00:14:06]Manisha's flatmate saw her kneeling and praying in front of a shrine, something she had never seen Manisha do before.

[00:14:16]Manisha doesn't like the new [music] arrangement, so she's going to change it.

[00:14:30]She still has a key to her old apartment.

[00:14:34]Pervy is home alone.

[00:14:37]Naraj was working as a security guard.

[00:14:41]Often doing overnight shifts.

[00:14:47]Something primal in her that night took a hold of her and she was unable to control herself.

[00:15:00]She put her hand over Pervy's throat.

[00:15:06]and she put her hands around her neck and started choking her.

[00:15:17]Movies would have you think that choking someone only takes 15 seconds. [screaming] It actually takes a tremendous amount of strength.

[00:15:41]But that wasn't the end of it. Then Manisha stabbed her twice after she was dead.

[00:15:49]>> Manisha thinks she's reset the clock.

[00:15:52]She thinks that with Pervy out of the picture, she and Nirage can get back to having life as [music] it was, the life that she knew and the life that she obviously loved with him.

[00:16:04]>> Nirage returns home from work.

[00:16:07]>> Pervy >> to discover his worst nightmare.

[00:16:11]Pervy.

[00:16:13]Pervy.

[00:16:14]>> Pervy is new to the country, but Nirage knows one person who would want her dead.

[00:16:23]And by coincidence, Manisha has also been stabbed.

[00:16:28]>> Hi, Manisha. How you feeling?

[00:16:31]>> I'm okay, sir.

[00:16:33]>> What happened again on the night of the staming?

[00:16:35]>> There were two of them.

[00:16:37]>> Two.

[00:16:38]>> They wore masks so I couldn't see their faces.

[00:16:40]>> Manisha said that she was attacked by two men as she was walking home.

[00:16:44]>> Then one of them stabbed me here.

[00:16:47]>> It turned out that she stabbed herself.

[00:16:51]She was trying to deflect attention [music] from the police investigation.

[00:16:56]>> Manisha's fate is sealed when the police check CCTV footage [music] of the victim's residence.

[00:17:04]She was seen on surveillance tape going into the building and coming out of the building uh in the middle of the night.

[00:17:13]When confronted with the evidence, she admits to the killing, but claims [music] self-defense.

[00:17:21]But again, her story falls short.

[00:17:25]Manisha's jealous history and self-inflicted wounds simply hasten her road to court.

[00:17:33]Manisha's thinking was so off center. She actually thought by eliminating her rival, Nirage would want her.

[00:17:46]In 2015, Manisha is found guilty of murder. On appeal, her conviction is quashed and she faces [music] a new trial.

[00:17:58]In 2018, Manisha Patel is [music] convicted of manslaughter.

[00:18:05]She is sentenced to [music] 9 years and 4 months behind bars.

[00:18:11]Manisha is highly [music] unlikely to kill again. Like most people convicted of murder, she had a very specific reason and motivation for doing it. And that's over.

[00:18:31]But how cute is that? I mean, >> on the night of June 23rd, 1987, >> Geraldine Smith is razor focused.

[00:18:41]>> Wow.

[00:18:42]>> She sets up an alibi spending the evening with family.

[00:18:47]>> How adorable.

[00:18:48]>> Then sends her hired help out on the streets of Chicago to do the dirty work.

[00:18:56]Louisa Macdonald picks up his wife and daughters after [music] church.

[00:19:02]>> Hey, how was it?

[00:19:04]>> Both so much fun.

[00:19:06]>> Yeah, we learned a new song.

[00:19:08]>> The pastor asks about you.

[00:19:09]>> Yeah.

[00:19:10]>> Mhm.

[00:19:14]>> Praise the Lord.

[00:19:16]He's a savior.

[00:19:19]>> Nearby, the hired assassins lie in wait.

[00:19:24]Marva Golden waited in the car with the engine running while Eddie Williams stood on the corner waiting for the McDonald family to return home.

[00:19:34]And that's where Louisa's love triangle explodes.

[00:19:43]She was shot to death in front of her children.

[00:19:51]The two young daughters were highly traumatized.

[00:19:56]>> Two days later, 37-year-old mother of two Valerie McDonald dies in the hospital.

[00:20:04]>> Was a gunshot wound to the head. She went down immediately. I don't believe she ever actually regained consciousness.

[00:20:14]>> Did you take care of it?

[00:20:18]Geraldine thinks she has won.

[00:20:22]>> This was the whole master plan of Geraldine to seize the husband [music] that she couldn't have from Valerie. And the easiest way out was [music] to eliminate Valerie McDonald, which she did.

[00:20:36]>> What Gerald Dean doesn't know is the cops are already on her trail.

[00:20:47]After his wife's shot, Louisa chases the gunman.

[00:20:51]>> Go, go, go, go, go, go.

[00:20:53]>> When he sees the getaway car, he realizes who's behind this shocking attack.

[00:21:04]>> He informed the detectives that that car looked exactly like his girlfriend Geraldine Smith's car.

[00:21:11]>> Their prime suspect [music] says she was at home with family all night. She's so cute.

[00:21:18]>> She even tries to explain the getaway car.

[00:21:22]>> She stated that she didn't have any knowledge of the shooting that a friend of hers had asked to borrow her car. She had given it to her and she hadn't returned with the car.

[00:21:35]>> The police don't believe her.

[00:21:38]Geraldine Smith's vehicle was processed [music] by the Chicago Police Mobile Crime Lab and Eddie Williams fingerprints were recovered.

[00:21:51]>> Come on, tell us what you know.

[00:21:54]>> Gerald Dean and her two helpers are charged with murder.

[00:21:59]>> You killed her, didn't you?

[00:22:00]>> Under questioning, Gerald Dean admits [music] nothing.

[00:22:05]She just repeatedly denied any knowledge of it. She just appeared cold.

[00:22:13]>> The hired killers are much easier to crack. It >> was you that killed her.

[00:22:19]>> No, Eddie shot her. [music] I was just the driver. Eddie Williams and Marva Golden gave full statements implicating themselves and each other and Geraldine Smith in the shooting of Valerie McDonald.

[00:22:36]In 1989, Marva Golden pleads [music] guilty to first-degree murder and is sentenced to 20 years.

[00:22:49]Eddie Williams also pleads guilty and is serving life.

[00:22:54]>> You would think they would be the hardened ones, but they readily uh confessed their parts in the crime.

[00:23:02]>> Geraldine Smith is found guilty of firstdegree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

[00:23:09]>> She had no qualms with paying $500 to have somebody killed in front of their children.

[00:23:23]In 1991, she is sentenced [music] to death, later commuted to life in prison.

[00:23:32]17 years later, in 2008, Geraldine Smith is released on parole. Geraldine Smith is one of the few truly evil people, male or female, that I've ever had to interview.

[00:25:19]>> Across [music] town, 28-year-old US Air Force Sergeant Brian Spinx is also giving back to his community and his country.

[00:25:27]>> He came from a military family. I know his family [music] was very very respectable and instilled very good values in him.

[00:25:37]>> At [music] a get together in 2008, Brian's life takes a beautiful turn.

[00:25:47][music] >> She just seemed like a a nice girl. Very laidback. Uh kind of quiet.

[00:26:47]Back in time in 1893 in Little Italy, New York, life is tough for newly arrived Italian [music] immigrant, 21-year-old Maria Barbella.

[00:27:01]Maria was not well educated and barely spoke English.

[00:27:07]But Maria's determined to get ahead.

[00:27:10]She gets a job as a seamstress.

[00:27:14]You proposed >> and has big dreams for her future in a new land.

[00:28:16]They were from the same region in Italy.

[00:28:18][music] And that made her feel comfortable with him.

[00:38:30]In Shrefport, Louisiana, Kim Coleman's possessive jealousy is destroying her relationship with Brian Spinx.

[00:39:17]>> It's the last straw for Brian. On January 16th, 2010, after a night out with friends is ruined, Brian decides [music] to end the relationship permanently.

[00:39:35]>> And he left her a voicemail telling her how embarrassed he was and that they were over.

[00:39:56]Kim doesn't [music] get the message because she's on her way over.

[00:41:16]It's then believed that she went back into the kitchen, retrieved a second knife, and continued to stab him 60 plus times.

[00:41:33]She was a [music] woman scorned in that moment and committed an unimaginable crime against someone who fought for our country.

[00:41:59]>> I don't think she would have made the call to 911 if she knew that he was still alive. I think she thought he was dead.

[00:42:15]>> Him pleading basically for his life, knowing that the person that did this to him is still right there next to him.

[00:42:30]>> It's the most chilling of calls >> and you hear a gurgle.

[00:42:42]>> The gurgling sound. It appeared to us at that time is when his throat was cut. We believe it was during the actual 911 call. It's almost demonike what she did.

[00:42:54]>> The last horrific moments of Brian's life have been recorded, but [music] Kim still thinks she can save herself by creating an intruder. To give her story credence, [laughter] she stabs herself.

[00:43:14]The story she told was that somebody had followed her home and attacked both of them in the apartment.

[00:43:22]That was the first story she told.

[00:43:24]>> But there's no evidence [music] of an intruder and the 911 call will seal Kim's fate.

[00:43:32]>> There was no doubt in my mind that we were looking the person that killed Brian Sphinx directly in the eyes.

[00:43:38]>> I did it.

[00:43:40]>> But he was coming after me.

[00:43:42]Kim is charged with seconddegree murder.

[00:43:47][music] >> The prosecution did such a great job poking holes in her story. The jury knew that [music] Kim Coleman killed Brian Spinx in cold blood.

[00:44:01]>> In 2012, Kim Coleman [music] is convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

[00:44:11]When I found out, I was shocked. I never saw anything [music] like this in her before. I never thought she was capable of anything like this. And I almost couldn't [music] believe it.

[00:44:31]>> Giving her heart to the wrong person has ruined Maria Barbella's life. Desperate to save her reputation, on April 26, 1895, she turns to her mom for help.

[00:44:45]Maria even asked her mother, Filyamina, [music] to please come and help persuade Dominico to help him find his senses.

[00:45:35]that caused her to snap.

[00:45:43]Maria was pushed to a point by him that she could not tolerate.

[00:45:52]It was quick and it was deadly.

[00:45:57]He wouldn't have known what had hit him.

[00:46:01]He misunderstood and miscalculated her for being a complete and total pushover.

[00:46:09]With so many witnesses, Maria is immediately charged with first-degree murder. But her case will become the talk of New York. At her trial, the allmale jury don't hear details of her abuse at the hands of Dominico. They see it as a public killing and convict her of murder.

[00:46:37]Her fate seemed sealed.

[00:46:40]>> But the court of public opinion doesn't agree, particularly the women of New York. They think she has grounds for [music] justifiable homicide and campaign for more than a year until she gets a retrial. [music] The jury hears her story for the first time.

[00:47:03]>> The jury found [music] her not guilty and she walked out of court.

[00:47:13]Did Maria kill [music] Dominico? Yes, she did. Was it justifiable homicide?
