Using "radiational cooling" to explain a chilly night is a classic case of over-intellectualizing the obvious. It turns a simple frost warning into a physics lecture that prioritizes jargon over practical utility.

Cooler, sunshine for Mother's Day in ChicagoAdded:
With your first look at the weather forecast, if you are going to be treating mom for today, happy Mother's Day to all the moms. It is going to be beautiful with sunny sky conditions.
Tonight though, chilly temperatures with the potential for some patchy frost. And as we look ahead to Tuesday, that's our next chance of rain showers and even a few thunderstorms in the forecast. Right now, a live picture across Chicago, 46°.
That's how it feels. Grab the jackets this morning. We do have a calm wind.
The winds today are fairly light out of northeast. So, that's going to be keeping our lakefront communities on the cooler end. We're staying dry for today, unlike yesterday, when we had that cold front roll through bringing us a little bit of that light rainfall. As we look ahead to this afternoon, around dinner time, 5:00, 6:00, we're going to be in for mainly clear sky conditions. Again, the winds are going to be fairly light from start to finish for today. Tonight, those clear skies will remain with us.
That's where we will start as we look ahead to your Monday morning. Monday afternoon, another gorgeous day with plenty of sunshine. But then here comes a cold front. That's going to be arriving Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday evening, giving us kind of rainfall. And you can see right here some of these deep oranges and yellows popping up on radar. That's indication of some heavy downpours and the potential for a few isolated thunderstorms, too. So, this cold front's going to roll through starting at around 2:00 p.m. continuing until about 7:00, 8:00 p.m. And then after that, we will clear out for your Wednesday and beyond. For today though, for Mother's Day, 64° for your high temperature, mostly sunny skies. We will be cooler for those lakefront communities with temperatures there in those low 60s. The farther inland that you are, middle to upper 60s. Then tonight, 40° for your low with those clear skies. Patchy frost is going to play a role for tonight. And the reason why it is it's going to be so cool is because of radiational cooling. So, during the day we have sunshine which radiates and that heats up the earth's surface. Well, at night sometimes we have cloud cover and if we do those clouds act like a blanket trapping in all the heat at the surface. Well, like tonight we're going to be in for a clear sky. So, that's going to release all the heat that we received during the day freely back into the atmosphere. Plus, tonight we're going to have a light wind too. So, mixing can't occur. What I mean by mixing is the warmer air aloft can't get dragged out of the cooler air at the surface. So, we do have that frost risk especially across our northwestern suburbs for tonight early tomorrow morning. If you already done some of your spring planting, protect those plants. Maybe put a burlap sack over them. So, 64 for the high temperature today. We should be at 68. That's normal for this time of year. So, we're going to be below that today as well as tomorrow. Tomorrow a high temperature of 56°.
Low 70s on your Tuesday with a chance of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures return to the 60s Wednesday and Thursday. Mid 70s by Friday and then the warmest day this week does come next weekend, Suzanne, with a high temperature of 82°.
