Loeb successfully moves the UAP debate from tabloid speculation to rigorous physics, proving that data is the only cure for our cosmic curiosity. It is a refreshing example of how high-level academia can tackle fringe topics without losing its intellectual integrity.

Analysis of the First UFO File ReleaseHinzugefügt:
The United States government has released its first batch of newly public files on unidentified objects, UFOs or UAPs. These are objects that the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies cannot identify. If they are real and not spurious, there are two possible interpretations.
Either these are familiar humanmade or natural objects or these are nonhuman-made objects.
Either way, the matter is of great importance for national security or for basic science. The biggest impact of today's release is psychological.
This topic deserves to be within the mainstream of public or scientific discourse. Like any detective story, the mystery can be resolved with high quality evidence. Knowing the distance, velocity, and acceleration of these objects would address the question of whether any of them lies outside the performance envelope of humanmade technologies. This is the goal of the Galileo project under my leadership. We are triangulating many objects in the sky and are using artificial intelligence to ascertain their nature.
But the annual defense budget is a million times larger than the annual budget of the Galileo project. The Department of War and the US intelligence apparatus have been using state-of-the-art sensors to monitor the sky and the oceans over decades. As a result, these sensors might have detected rare anomalies that escape the attention of scientists. It is the civil duty of scientists like myself to help the government solve the mysteries of these unidentified objects. At the very least, I would feel that my research time was not wasted since it contributed to national security. Finding an extraterrestrial visitor would be the icing on the cake and the biggest scientific discovery ever made. It will likely change our perspective away from local conflicts to a cosmic perspective.
If probes are visiting our backyard, we might aim to visit the backyard of their senders. There is no doubt that we could be visited because it would take a billion years for the Voyager spacecraft to cross the Milky Way galaxy. And most stars formed billions of years before the sun. There was plenty of time for probes to arrive into our cosmic backyard. Even at the speed of our existing rockets, science is the privilege of staying curious and taking risks.
Enrio Fermy asked in 1950, where is everybody? This is not a philosophical question. It is a scientific question that can be addressed based on data. The answer might be right here. We should be open-minded to the possibility rather than ridiculing or sidelining it. The new release will be followed by additional installments in the coming weeks and months. The best is yet to come because higher quality data will take more vetting by layers of government bureaucracy before it is released. It is remarkable to find within the released files a letter from 1947 addressed to the chief of staff of the air force discussing flying discs.
Serious military and government officials have been documenting unidentified objects across agencies across decades across the world.
President Trump referred to the UFO file release today with the words, "Have fun and enjoy." Indeed, this is exactly what the Galileo project research team under my leadership did today. Altogether, there were 161 total records released on May 8th, 2026 with 82 records from the Department of War, 56 records from the FBI, 12 records from NASA, eight records from the State of Altogether, there were 161 total records released on May 8th, 2026, with 82 records from the Department of War, 56 records from the FB FBI, 12 records from NASA, eight records from the State Department, 28 records, and 14 image records. The 46 videos requested by Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna will likely be released in future batches. After reviewing the new files, my research team concluded that none of the objects is sufficiently extraordinary to require an exotic origin. Interesting details regarding the videos are unfortunately reducted and all images could be explained as either reflections in the camera optics or human-made objects. Apollo mission images show lights above the lunar surface, but these light sources could be flashes from asteroid impacts as reported by the Artemis 2 astronauts or they could be optical artifacts. My day was filled with two dozen television interviews where I explained the above points. In one of them with Newsmax, I was asked to represent humanity in a future encounter with aliens. I'm excited to take part in a blind date of interstellar proportions because it offers me an opportunity to find a dating partner who is more intelligent than I can find here on Earth. Are we alone? is both the most romantic and also the most impactful question in science.
>> Dr. Abby Loe is a professor at Harvard University and the director for the Institute for Theory and Computation.
And Luis Alzando is the author of Imminent Inside the Pentagon's Hunt for UFOs.
>> All right, Lou, first to you on this one. Give us your thoughts on what we're seeing in these newly released documents and videos and pictures.
>> Well, first of all, thank you for having me, John and Katrina. Um this is really a historic moment for for greater transparency in the US government. Uh this administration made a promise to the American people and they are delivering on that promise. So I think it's very very significant. Two, what I'd like to do is just caution people.
Look, it's very very easy uh for us to go down these rabbit holes and look at something on a video and be like, "Oh, wow. That's that's really something interesting." And reality is some of these a lot of these things have prosaic explanations. What concerns me are the ones that do not. When I was at the Pentagon in the ATIP program, which was the Pentagon's UFO investigative program that we had at the Pentagon, we worked with the CIA, the FBI, and there were moments, there were instances where we were encountering things that certainly were outperforming anything we have in our inventory and we were pretty sure was not foreign, adversarial. So, so there's still a big mystery behind this.
>> Yeah. You know, President Trump just weighing in on True Social as he has wanted to do. Yes, Avi. Uh, here's what he said. As for my promise to you, the Department of War has released the first trunch of the UFO UAP files to the public for their review and study. In an effort for complete and maximum transparency, it was my honor to direct my administration to identify improved government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena, and unidentified flying objects. Whereas previous administrations have failed to be transparent on the subject, with these new documents and videos, the people can decide for themselves what the hell is going on. Have fun and enjoy. Have fun and enjoy.
>> And happy happy Friday. I'm less concerned now.
>> Yes, exactly. Uh, you know, Obby, I I just have to ask you the question. I mean, you know, you you talk to people.
John and I were talking about it like are they or aren't they real? Of course.
Of course, we're talking about uh you know, intelligent life um way outside of this solar system. What do you think on that? Uh what's your answer to that and why?
>> Well, thanks for having me.
Fundamentally, I believe that we are not at the top of the food chain.
>> As shocking as it might sound and the reason is simple that there are 100 billion stars like the sun in the Milky Way galaxy alone. Most of them formed billions of years before the sun. We are late to the cosmic party and even our Voyager spacecraft takes less than a billion years, you know, to cross the Milky Way galaxy. So that's 1970s technologies and there was plenty of time for other civilizations more accomplished than we are to reach our backyard. And so this is not a philosophical question. It's not a religious question. It's a scientific question as to whether we are being visited. We just need to look around us.
And you know this question of are we alone was asked by the physicist Enrico Fermy back in 1950 uh in Los Alamos. And perhaps one possible qu answer to this question is right here. We just need to look and uh I'm very much encouraged by the release of the data today even though it's preliminary and we should expect the most interesting data to come out in the future because it takes more time to declassify but already today we have uh about 82 records from department of war, 56 records from the FBI, 12 records from NASA, eight records from the state department. you know altogether we are talking about serious people noticing things they cannot understand uh and of course their day job is national security so these are serious people we depend on them for the safety of our nation and they say they cannot figure out things so for me as a scientist you know I very much would like to help them and I'm really delighted to see this data because I see science as the privilege of maintaining our childhood curiosity you know most of the scientists are risk averse NASA will never make a statement that could be controversial. So they are very careful at what they say. But fundamentally science is about data evidence, looking at it with open eyes and figuring out for ourselves the answer. And you know that's what makes it fun. And I completely resonate with what President Trump said. It is fun to look at data and try to figure it out.
