Your soul, composed of mind, will, and emotions, cycles through four distinct seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall) in your relationship with God, each with a unique overriding need, fear, lie, temptation, antidote, worship expression, focus, and tree of life purpose; understanding which season you're in helps you process circumstances intentionally, overcome season-specific challenges, and grow into Christ's likeness while bearing fruit for others.

7 Things You Need To Know About Each Soul Season With God
Added:As we talk about God in every season of your soul and the cycles and seasons that you go through in your relationship with him specifically, I have a goal. I want you to be able to look back and better understand what you've been through with him. Because the more you understand your past, the more you're going to have clarity in the future. And the more you realize what he's done in your past, the more you're going to trust him with your future. And you know what? You don't partner with someone that you don't trust. And one of the goals in life is that you would be able to fulfill the purpose and the assignment that God has for you. And how on earth can we fulfill the assignment and purpose that we have if we don't partner with him? and we'll never partner with him when we don't trust him. And we don't trust a God that we don't understand where he's been in our past because we need to move forward with him into our future. And so I want to unpack that a little bit with you today as we get more into this understanding that your relationship with God goes through cycles and seasons.
Today I'm going to talk about the fact that there are four seasons, how I got that revelation that I unpack in the book that I've written called God in every season and an accompanying study guide that you can do as an individual or with a small group or with your spouse. There's a diagnostic test in there that helps you understand exactly what season your soul is in in your relationship with God right now. And as we talk about those four seasons, I'm going to also explain to you there are seven aspects related to each of the four seasons that I'm going to get into over the next several weeks where we're going to talk about what it looks and feels like to be in a winter season with God versus a spring or a summer or a fall season. Your soul is made in the image of God. And God has shown us so much of what he's like throughout nature where we see the cycles and the seasons all around us. And in the same way, whether you're a man or a woman, you are going through cycles and seasons that are actually propelling you forward. In the same way that there are minutes, hours, days, and years, we have the winter, spring, summer, and fall played out in the earth, but the earth continues to advance and move forward in terms of age. Right? In the same way, we are growing up into the likeness of Christ as God himself, our father, our faithful father, escorts us through these seasons. And my goal is to help you not only see him better in your past, but to also help you feel better about where you are right now in the season that you're in. And if you feel stuck and in reality are stuck in one of these seasons with God, we're going to get you unstuck.
So, we talked last week about Ecclesiastes where it says to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck what is planted. And then it goes on through a long list of all the different daily things that happen throughout um this earth experience. And it concludes by saying he has made everything beautiful in its time or you could say in its season. He has put eternity in their hearts. Isn't it amazing how he has put us in the context of time here on earth? All so that we can be birthed out of this restriction of time into the limitlessness of eternity itself where there is no end and there is no time. It's all just more and more and more of him, knowing him and being with him. And who knows what other mysteries God has as part of that.
But that daily that that point of cycling through the things that we go through here on this side of eternity is already connected to where we are headed forever, where we're being birthed into.
And you know, part of the cycles that we go through is we are being emptied so that we can be filled again. In the same way that um God created a woman's body with a womb that could receive life and birth it over and over and over again.
In the same way, you were created in your relationship with God to be fruitful, to bear evidence, to bear fruit that shows evidence of the fact that there is a God and he is good. You are being filled with purpose and then you're birthing that purpose into the earth throughout the cycles of your life. And so there's an emptiness that comes that gets filled once again and a birthing of his purposes in the earth through your life over and over and over again. You are a display of the splendor of God.
And the seed so to speak that God plants in you that then grows and matures throughout those seasons that you cycle through in your relationship with him.
that seed that grows in you that you eventually um give life to and it becomes something that is that is fruitful in real life. Um that thing in you is something that you will sew and another person then can benefit from and have their own experience in their own seasons with God. We're all interconnected in that way. Right? In the same way that if I as a woman birth a child, I have literally impacted the world through that thing. That child that I birth, it's not a thing, but through whatever it is that you and God are birthing together in this season. It could be something that's a revelation, an understanding. It could be an aspect of your character growing and maturing that you're birthing into the earth. It could be a project literally an assignment that God has given you maybe through your career or through something that you do as a hobby and it it is birthed and then it literally impacts those around you. One of the things I I talked about last time we were on choose love was the fact that that we're not talking about the seasons of life, we're talking about the seasons of your soul.
And so I want to look into what we mean when we talk about our soul. Our soul is made up of our mind, our will, our emotions. And it is the place where our body, our physical body and our soul, that part of us that will live forever, overlap.
It's what makes you uniquely you. It's your personality, what you feel, and the way that you process everything.
All of that will go with you into eternity. You don't just become a different person when you take your first breath in heaven. We're still us.
We're still have the same similar unique wiring that God gave us, that we grow into here on earth. It's just hopefully the more mature version of all of that.
Right? So your soul is the part of you that is being transformed and becoming beautiful in its time or we could say in its seasons. Your soul is important now and for all of eternity. And because your soul is important, wouldn't it be wise and worthy of your energy to focus on it even now to invest in your soul where you meet with God?
It's in your soul throughout each changing season where you can intentionally and correctly process the circumstances of life. And how we process, how you process your pain and your victories is what matters most.
Your soul in the context of the season that you're currently in and the seasons that you have yet to go through is where you think about God. Johnny has a favorite quote by um Awtoer and it's um let's see if I can say it correctly.
What you think about God is the most important thing about you. What you think about God is the most important thing about you. So our soul is where we literally think about God and we process the weightiness of who he is, who we who he who we think he is, who we are experiencing him to be and ultimately who we believe him to be. That all plays out in your soul. And what you think about God is the most important thing about you. Your soul is where you will gain anything that's of eternal worth.
So when we talk about God in every season of your soul, we're actually talking about the most important part of who you are now and in eternity. So it's a big deal what we're talking about here. Another thing I wanted to point out before I get into the four seasons and the seven aspects is that obviously none of us has the luxury of choosing the seasons of our soul anymore than we get to choose the weather. This is something that we were born into. The same way that you were born into, you know, winter, spring, summer, or fall, wherever you, what city or place on the planet you were born, you landed and it began this perpetual cycle. You were born spiritually into a perpetual cycle where your soul is cycling through these distinct times with your God. It's important because of that how we choose to get through them.
So, we don't get to choose the season we're in, but we do get to choose what we're going to do with the season that we're in. And no matter what the season you're currently in is like, there's always something in us that's kind of just ready for the next thing. And then when we're actually going through transition and change, we hate it, right? We want what's familiar. And God in his kindness has only given us four distinct seasons.
um you see it played out in the earth especially if you're in a zone where you get to experience you know winter and then spring and it's you know very um obvious as you change seasons you get a little tired of each of the seasons and there's something that's refreshing about the shift and the change but then we always complain too right we're like oh you know I got to pull out my coat for the winter and oh going to go into these shorter days and it's darker longer And there's always something to complain about, but yet there's also something in us that longs for the new, for the next new thing. And out of God's kindness, he gives us the familiarity of the four seasons to set us up for success. What if, for example, in the earth, we had like no season ever the same? like we'd had a million different seasons that we cycled didn't cycle through but we you know progressed through you would never know what to expect. You couldn't prepare, right? And the familiarity in the spirit also is so helpful once you realize what's actually happening. You're like, "Oh, okay. I'm in spring right now and as much as I'm enjoying this, I need to be ready for what God's doing next in my heart. And I and I don't need to um fight against the change when it starts happening. And I need to embrace what he's doing now because I'll never have this season again. And you'll have the familiar seasons. You're going to have many spring seasons in the future, but never that spring season, right? Because you're advancing and moving forward.
So don't ever be in such a rush that you miss the opportunities of the season that you're currently in.
Okay. So the four seasons, I first wanted to kind of describe to you where this book came from and the revelation that I put in it. Um, as I said before, it really is a labor of love. First of all, a labor of love for the Lord. It's the best version I can put on paper of my experience with God. It's kind of like a giant journal and I'm inviting you along in it. And in this um God in every season book and uh study guide that I've written to go with it, it's basically um came from a time in my life where I was leading worship at our church that we were pastoring in Atlanta. We're not pastoring anymore. And in this church, uh we were invited to go as a worship team lead at a conference in the area.
And we went, I was one of the worship leaders and a man came up to me afterwards that I didn't know and he said, "God spoke to me and said to tell you it's time for you to produce a record album." I guess not a record. We didn't have records then, but um to produce a worship album. And I was like, I so appreciate that. That means a lot that you would say that, but I'm not I don't write songs. I don't have any original songs. I don't play any instruments. I don't even know how I would do that. Um, and he said, "Well, if you change your mind, I know that God wants me to finance that for you." So, that got me thinking a little more seriously about it. I went home that night thinking about it, and I woke up in the middle of the night with just this big picture understanding of what the Lord wanted me to do. And in an instant, he just showed me. At this time, I had all four of our daughters already. And he showed me how each one of them through their, you know, toddler years from infancy to toddler had been a distinct season in my relationship with him. And he said, "I didn't just give you their four names." He said, "Their names were a reflection of things I was teaching you in those seasons of your soul with me." And I was like, "Whoa."
And I started thinking through their four names. So our our daughter's four names are Promise Joy, Justice, Hope, Grace, Victoria, and Glory Ruth.
And we have a story related to each one of them, how the Lord um prophetically gave us names for them and confirmed it in really cool ways. But that particular night as I was processing this with the Lord, he said, "I taught you in the middle of those seasons with me while you were at home raising each one of them because they were each kind of leaving the toddler stage when I would have the next one." And he said, "Your life and your life song was a unique worship to me from each of those different seasons you went through." And he just began to tell me. He said, "Promised Joy was a winter season in your soul with me." And Justice Hope was a spring season and Grace Victoria was a summer season and Glory Ruth was a fall season. And it just like opened up before me literally in an instant. And and I I was just looking at these this 10y year, 13-year lifespan of mine related to each of my daughters and all that I went through during those seasons of being at home with them. And I just saw where God had been in my past and it unlocked this incredible understanding that I couldn't wait to, you know, express and communicate to others. And I that's why I ended up writing about it.
But before I wrote about it, I went back to the man and I said, "You know what? I think I do have a worship album in me."
And so I ended up producing with some friends of ours that were on the worship band with me. Four long songs called Every Season of My Soul. So God in every Season is the name of the book that I wrote later, but I released this album.
It's on uh all the music platforms.
You'll be able to find it out there.
Just look under my name. Um don't expect, you know, Selene Dion voice or anything like that. I can carry a tune.
But the heart that was there in these four long songs became like the Psalms of David. And it was my my quest in in this worship album and worship experience for you was to help lead people through what raw, honest worship sounds like coming from that season of your soul. And so I wrote out a kind of prophetic lyrics similar to the Psalms for each one of these four seasons. So they became named promise, justice, grace, and glory.
And uh so yeah, you can for free uh access that and I think it will resonate with you especially after you read the book or maybe even after we further um dive into each of the seasons and these upcoming Choose Love episodes. Um but I wanted to just give you a little bit of the background of that so you'd understand where this revelation came from. So years after I produced the um worship CD, worship um album, I ended up writing the book that I now reprinted for a second edition and produced the study guide. One thing I want to say about the study guide is it's it's really I didn't know what else to call it. It's not a workbook. It's more of a study guide, but what it's called is experience God in every season. And it's meant to be a way that you can sit with the Lord and encounter him in powerful ways that you will never forget right in the season that you're in with him now.
So, all right, those are the four seasons. That's where they came from.
They're word pictures to help you not only relate to each season uniquely, but also understand how to maximize your growth in them. So, the four seasons, obviously, we don't really have a spiritual winter, but it is an analogy.
It's a word picture to help you relate to these aspects um of the Lord that you're experiencing through each season that your soul rotates through with him.
So, the first analogy that I use, okay, I'm going to go through um three different ones with each of the four seasons. This may sound confusing in the book. It's just right there. It's very simple. But um I take the season that you're in. So let's say we start with winter and we say what it feels like, a specific time of day, a point in the human lifespan, and a farmer's field. So the farmer's field is the easiest one to see, right?
I mean, you have a farmer's field and it looks completely different in the winter versus the spring versus the summer versus the fall. The farmer's field goes through four distinct seasons. Or maybe it's seasons within seasons. You know, in the summertime, maybe you plant uh corn crop and it's done at the end of summer. So, I'm not talking about the literal seasons. I'm just using it as an analogy. Um, another analogy that I use throughout the seasons is the time of day in this, and we'll get further into it as we talk about each of the seasons, but midnight is a reflection of a winter season with the Lord. Sunrise, right at sunrise, when the sun is just kicking off the start of a new day, is kind of an analogy of the spring season in our relationship with God. high noon when the sun is at its highest point in the day. It's the hottest time of the day.
That would be the summer season of our relationship with God. And then sunset would be the equivalent of um the fall season that we cycle through in our relationship with the Lord. And each of them are obviously important times of the day, but we really get into the nuances of what that means for us when we're going through these four seasons.
The other kind of word picture and analogy that I use when I talk about each of the seasons is the points of the human lifespan. So, conception would reflect a winter season. Birthing would reflect the season of springtime and maturation, the process of maturing would reflect the summer season of our relationship with God. And then the letting go of what has matured would be a reflection of our fall season with God. So those are three kind of word analogies that I use throughout the teaching on the winter, spring, summer, and fall. The other thing, the second thing, so there's seven aspects we're going through right now. Seven aspects that we'll talk about in the coming weeks and in the book of each of the four seasons. So the second thing that I talk about is your overriding need during each season. There is one main need that overrides all other needs of your soul during each season.
When we can get in touch with the legitimate needs that our soul has, then we're more likely to allow God to meet those needs.
Often times when we have a need, we spend so much time trying to validate that need that we never get the need met. We're just trying to prove that this is a legitimate need that we have.
But when you understand there is an appropriate need for that season and then you don't have to like convince God that it's a worthy need. You just go to him and freely receive what you're needing in that season. And we can also do a better job of giving ourselves the freedom to be needy or weak so that we have the chance to receive strength from him in a specific way that we need in that specific season. Sorry to interrupt this episode. I just wanted to quickly say that we love giving you guys this content for free. So, back to your show. we can be assured and know that it's normal and valid to have that need. So that is part of each of the seasons. I go into a very clear understanding of what is the overriding need that we all have when we go through that season with the Lord. The third aspect that we're going to get into related to each of the four seasons is there is a common fear, lie, and temptation that is unique to each season.
And that's so important to know. Others struggle just like you do. You're normal.
again. So, we waste so much energy in a specific season in our relationship with God because we are struggling and we are just like, "Has anybody else ever felt this way before? I mean, am I just is something wrong with me?" No, you're experiencing specific normal fears, lies, and temptations that come with that season.
going back to a farmer looking at his field. If he is looking at a a field during, let's say, springtime and all he sees are these little tiny plants that aren't even close to how big they need to be when it's time uh to harvest them.
If he doesn't know this is the appropriate time for a little small bud to begin to appear, not the whole plant.
If he doesn't know that and understand it, then he's going to look at that field of possibility that's, you know, it's it's right on schedule. It's the little buds, but he's going to look at it and be tempted to be scared that he's not going to have a harvest.
But it's not time for him to see the harvest. But if he knows, oh, I'm in the spring season where these things are just beginning to take off, then he's like, hey, we're right on schedule. I am not tempted to be afraid of what's happening next.
The enemy of our souls is not creative at all. And so these fears, lies, and temptations are not unique. They come back around every single time we come to that season. And when you know it's the enemy and his old familiar patterns, then you're more likely to see it for what it is and overcome it and not waste energy that comes with the fears, lies, and temptations of that season. Getting all of those fears, lies, and temptations into the light and identifying them for what they truly are makes a huge difference as you navigate the seasons of your soul with God. And lastly, another thought about the common fears. Your pain is real, and every one of your tears is felt and seen by God, but it's also shared by your brothers and sisters, your fellow humans. Every gender, and every race, every nation, every status, you're not alone.
You are literally experiencing the same fears, lies, and temptations by the same enemy. And there's something that happens when you understand that. You feel that sense of camaraderie like, "Oh, the same tricks. I got this. And not only do I have this and I can overcome this, but I know how to encourage others when I see them struggling with the same fears, lies, and temptations." The fourth aspect of the season that you go through that we're going to talk about is your antidote to fear. in each season.
Now, it's important not only to recognize the unique fear that comes with these seasons, but to deal with it as poison.
And for the poison of fear, there's always an antidote. And an antidote to any fear is always love, right? We'll discover the different ways to overcome the fear that can torment us in subtly different ways in winter, spring, summer, and fall. We're going to talk about what letting God's love in a specific way, what does it look like, and how does it help you overcome that fear, that lie, that temptation that you're experiencing in that season. The fifth aspect that we're going to talk about related to each of the four seasons is your worship in each season.
I love um there's a line in one of the songs by Brian and Katie Torwalt that says, "My soul will sing, my soul will make this place an altar."
An altar is where tragedy and disappointment converge with trust in the goodness of God.
So you know any season can bring with it life and life is full of tragedy and trauma and going through major difficulties. So how we make those a place of worship an altar when we go through them whatever season we're in is so important.
Worship is our heart and our soul coming into tune with the truth. Worship, your worship is when your heart and your soul comes into tune with the truth.
God is looking at your soul and listening to your heart's cry, which is the real you in each of these seasons.
And there's a unique sound that comes from that deep place inside of you during each of these seasons that you go through with him.
So question, do you have any places in your life right now that need to be made an altar?
We all have these places.
And it's only one time in your life will you ever have that day in all the unique circumstances that have come together for good or bad where you can worship him from that place.
So we're going to talk about how your worship in each season is central in your relationship with God. And again, true worship is what raw, honest passion sounds like coming from that season that you're in.
It's always going to be unique. It'll be a cry of your heart. It's not just the factual communication.
Um, you know, just like a dysfunctional marriage, you just would have factual communication. There's no romance in it.
What is marriage with no romance? It's lom. There's there's no fun in it.
Marriage was never meant to be separated from the romance of a relationship. And in the same way, our relationship with God was never meant to just be a series of factual exchanges. You know, I choose to believe in you and this that. There's a deep cry that we were meant to be able to offer up to God that's passionate.
It's real. It's honest. And he meets that cry. And he breathes life back into those places that we offer up to him, those altars where we meet him. So, in um each of these seasons, I have these lyrics that I wrote, as I told you, that are from the worship album that I did, and I unpack those with you, and I'm going to do that in in the upcoming um episodes of Choose Love here.
And number six, the sixth aspect of um each of these four seasons that we'll focus on is this, your focus in each season. So, it's easy to lose focus when you're under stress or pressure, right?
You're just tending to what screams the loudest. You're just trying to survive and you can lose focus of what is the most important thing either in life or in that day or what's the most important thing for that season. So, I'm going to help you discover the main things that you simply cannot afford to lose focus of in each of these unique seasons. So every season has a primary focus that if you'll keep it as foremost in that season, you're not going to get stuck.
You're going to keep moving forward and you're going to find yourself bearing fruit in due season. Cycle after cycle in your relationship with God.
So there's no neutral ground ever. No neutral ground. We're not ever just coasting.
Everything requires, as we said before, intentionality in order to move forward.
But the good thing is is you're not the only one that's fighting for your life to advance. God himself, your father, is fighting with you. He's fighting on your behalf to move you forward so that there is no neutral ground. So that you are taking ground all the time. And lastly, the seventh aspect that we're going to cover in each of these four seasons is uh the tree of life in each season. Um I read to you before Psalm 13. Like a tree planted by streams of living water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, whatever they do prospers.
So we know our soul is like a tree of life where our seasons unfold and we will bear fruit. You will bear fruit in your appointed seasons.
We'll discover that our leaves are for the healing of others.
and will answer questions like, "What is it that you were called to produce that will bring healing to the nations?
What aspect of the goodness of God are you being a conduit of in these seasons?" I think one of the simple ways to think of them is is it's just a constant moving forward in our longing for more of God. More of God. And when we say more of God, we want to see more of his redemption and his justice played out in our lives, through our lives, and through the things that we've been through, through the things that we're going through and that we're going to go through. That literally makes us these portals for the kingdom of God to come through into the earth. as you contend for more of the Lord in your life coming through these seasons that you're cycling through and your relationship with him. Couple of other things that that we will do when we get to each of these seasons. At the end of us talking about each season, I'm going to provide for you and I'll read over you a truth statement related to the season that um I'm I'm teaching about. So there's a specific truth statement related to winter, another one for spring, another one for summer, and another one for fall. And you know, I've talked about this throughout the years, but the importance of our mouths, our words, what we speak, scripture makes it very clear that it's so important what we say with our mouths. our mouths like a rudder of a ship. We guide our souls through the waters of that specific season so that we get to the next season. And you know, with our words, we've also learned, you know, science has taught us in recent years that when your brain hears your voice speak something out loud, it literally rewires your brain. It can cause old pathways of thinking based on trauma you've been through to rewire around the truth that you now know as a more mature adult who's grown more and more into the likeness of Jesus. And so I'm excited about speaking those truth statements over you related to each of the seasons because truth statements work. And I'm going to be challenging you to create your own truth statements related to the season that you're in to help guide your own soul through the lies, the fears into truth so that you produce the fruit that you were created to produce at this point in your life. And we're going to become so empowered in our thoughts and in our behavior that no matter what season we're in that we live free from the things that undermine our intimacy with God, who created us to be free. You know, that thing in you that longs for freedom from all the things that hold us back is God in you. He didn't give you a longing for something that he doesn't also want for you and that he's not only empowering you but equipping you to grow into. So there are layers of freedom to be experienced and um we're going to experience those together. I wanted to read something briefly from my book God in every season and this is just a paragraph related to our worship. And worship again is such a key part of our intimacy with God. Like a photographer who senses the constant new opportunities to capture the endless yet fleeting new perspectives of their subject matter. A true worshipper seeks to capture the passion evoked from seeing God at that unique moment in their adventure with him. Whatever the season, in fact, the more in love you are, the more varied experiences or seasons you want to go through with the one you love. This aspect is my favorite, which is why this book was birthed from a worship project.
There's a point in your relationship with God that he so touches your affection that you don't mind. You even crave the next new thing with him because you crave to see him in new ways that he currently can't be seen. As a worshipper, you can't wait to see yet another facet of who he is. So that you absolutely have to worship in new ways with new words and a new passion. When we talk about worship in each season, be sure to take inventory of your own worship life and be willing to upgrade it. And don't worry if it's language and expression changes through the seasons.
He loves it all because he loves you.
So, I just want to pray over you and bless your soul's cry right now in the season that you're in. Lord, I um I just pray for every single person that is relating to this and maybe starting to figure out what season their soul is in with you right now. Um, and I just want to bless their intimacy with you and the outward expression of their worship, whether it's in a worship setting at church or driving in their car with their worship music going or at home with some intentional time of worship, maybe with their family. God, I ask that you would begin to show them how they have um an opportunity right now to see you in ways they've never seen you before because they've never been in this exact season and moment with you before. Would you open their eyes to see you?
Not just see you rightly, but see you in a fresh way that that causes an overflow of worship that they've never given you before because they've never seen you in this way before. I'm asking you to do that with me as well, Lord. this season that we are each in with you that is so familiar but so unique and hard in its own ways, important in its own ways.
It's such an opportunity ultimately to know you in a way we've never known you before.
Oh God, that I would know new aspects of who you are, what you're like.
Thank you for making yourself known and available to every one of us. Whether we feel it or not, it's the truth.
Would you teach us to worship from that new place, that new perspective of who you are? Would you do something so powerful in each of our our our perspectives that we must we simply must overflow with some new version of worship of you?
You deserve it, Lord. And you say that we are worthy to have these new fresh experiences of you. And so we say yes to it. We say yes to you in Jesus name.
Amen. All right, I will see you next time on Choose Love where we will begin to get into the first of the four seasons, winter.
