Pitch-roll Palmrest prototype, round 2!Added:
Hey everyone, new prototype day. So, first of all, I want to give a big shout-out to my friend Cyrus in the UK who's been pushing me over the last couple of years with mechanism design stuff on a regular basis by just charging into it and doing their own stuff. And after I showed that M6 V-brake adjuster pitch roll mechanism the other day, Cyrus is like, "Eh, I think you could invert that in a better way." And sure enough, you can. He sent me a a little demo geometry palm rest in his own mini style. And I have integrated that into my own palm rest repo now, which will be this part will be released at some point soon. Anyway, what it is is it takes that spherical washer approach and makes the palm itself the spherical washer, which is pretty cool. So, we're going to take this carrier here.
We're going to put the palm on top of it.
We're going to put this nut and this like sort of spherical washer thing on this screw through here.
And we'll pop that down into the base plate carrier.
And then we'll take this M6 nut and thread it on there a little bit.
And then pop it into place.
And tighten it down the rest of the way.
So, it's almost snug. I'm just going to reposition the palm.
And here we go. So, this is it as assembled. Ignore the protruding screw here. It's too long for this application, but it's what I had handy.
What we have here is a fully pitch roll adjustable palm rest that locks down pretty darn hard with an M6 screw providing compression between all of these very solidly printed plastic parts, but gives you a very smooth pitch roll adjust with just one tension adjustment. So, now you can see that when I loosen that screw a little bit, we have plus minus 20° of pitch and roll.
This is pitch. Here's roll.
It's a huge amount of adjustment range, way more than you actually practically need for this. But, when you snug it down with this single screw, which is accessible from the top, boy, it is it is rigid AF. Uh there is no there's no moving this once it's actually cinched down. I'm exploring whether this could be done with an M3 screw or maybe an M4 cuz M6 is way overkill for the amount of tension you really need to make this feel solid. But, what's really cool about this is that it's a super flexible pitch roll mechanism with a ton of range, adjustable from the top with only this mild surface discontinuity in the top surface of the palm rest, which you can cover with something if you want.
And it's all just inert plastic parts.
So, there's one nut and one bolt, and that's it. Everything else is printable parts. And so, if you want to change the geometry of the palm rest, whatever, you're literally just changing, you know, in CAD the actual shape of this surface, and everything else can be can be shifted. If you want to change the height of it, you can just print a new carrier that shims it up 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, whatever.
And it's a really flexible architecture.
So, I'm stoked about this.
Uh thank you again to Cyrus. I love you, dude. Uh you you keep pushing me, and it makes me so happy. And I hope that other folks, once I get this out there, will experiment and continue to push the envelope of what's possible for really, really comfy palm rests on small boards and anything else.
