Possibility of severe weather for Boston area

[00:00:14]>> Right now, uh, next weather alert as we give you a live look here out over the city. This next weather alert is for heavy downpours and the risk of severe thunderstorms. We thank you for joining us. I'm Courtney Cole here with meteorologist and executive producer of our next weather team, Terry Ellison.

[00:00:29]And Terry, these conditions will impact the evening commute. We know that you guys are on it minute by minute for us.

[00:00:34]>> Yeah, it's going to be a bit of a rowdy evening and rowdy overnight tonight.

[00:00:37]We've got some potential for some downpours, some storms, uh, and several rounds of them at that. So, yeah, we did issue a next weather alert through tonight uh for periods of heavy rain. I think there's a chance that in some areas we could see 1 to three inches of rain in a short period of time, maybe even a little bit more. Uh, and c certainly that would cause some localized flooding should that happen.

[00:00:56]Right now, most of the action is down in Connecticut, and man, it's been pouring in southwestern Connecticut. We have some reports of over 4 in of rain down there. Um, and we're just waiting to see if that's going to lift north. You can see there are flash flood warnings uh issued for several counties down there in southern Connecticut. And you it's starting to lift northeastward and towards the Boston area. But if we go a little further west of there, you can see there are actually several tornado warnings now in parts of New York State, just northwest of New York City. In fact, uh the National Weather Service just issued a tornado watch for a very large area of uh New York State. The only little part of New England is western most Connecticut that's in that tornado watch and that's up till 9:00.

[00:01:35]Pulling out even a little further. You can see that a lot of this action stretches up into the upper Great Lakes, the Ohio River Valley. So, just to say there are several sort of waves of storms and downpours that we're going to have to go through uh through this evening and even actually into tomorrow.

[00:01:50]So, futurecast takes that uh pretty heavy downpours and thunderstorms right up into the Boston area from Hartford up up to the Boston area at about 5 or 6:00 tonight just in time for the evening commute. And of course, I think a lot of folks are wondering what about the Socks game tonight. I'll get to that in a second. But as you can see, this certain model uh has a pretty good downpour over Boston around 5 or 6 and then another round comes through later tonight closer to say 10 or 11:00. You can see a couple different lines. I wouldn't take this model uh exactly as it's shown. It's really hard for models to pinpoint thunderstorms and where they're going to be at any given time, but needless to say, there's lots of potential for downpours and thunderstorms this evening. We should clear out after midnight a bit and then the actual cold front comes through tomorrow, but as you can see, there's not a whole lot on futurecast. I'm not sure that the atmosphere is just going to be perfect enough to get uh more severe weather going, but there could be a brief shower or quick storm sometime later tomorrow afternoon. So, if you're heading to Fenway tonight, I would definitely bring the rain gear. I would be ready for anything. Um it certainly delays or cancellations are are possible um with all the action that's going to be going on. It just depends on really those thunderstorms where they track exactly and you can never really pinpoint several hours ahead of time if there's going to be one over Boston and at what time. But it's definitely a potential for tonight. Tomorrow a much better chance at being dry. So again, tomorrow for the area, we're well into the 80s.

[00:03:12]The humidity still around for most of the day and until that uh cold front comes through in the afternoon with the isolated uh shower. I think after that is when the due points will drop off and we'll notice a difference. Uh also going to be gusty wind tonight down south coast, southshore, cape and the islands through tomorrow. We could see gusts over 30 maybe even over 40 miles an hour at times and because of that the national weather service has issued a high surf advisory for tomorrow and Thursday. Okay. So, if you're heading to the beaches, especially down in this area, uh I would definitely be aware.

[00:03:41]The waves are going to be uh probably 4 to 8 ft, maybe even a little higher. So, just dangerous conditions. Probably some rip tide u you know, risk as well.

[00:03:49]Again, that's for Wednesday and Thursday. Now, as we get past that, much quieter times. It looks like a big old high pressure over us on Friday. We'll kind of be squeezed in between two weather boundaries later in the weekend.

[00:04:00]Uh but I think the high is going to protect us from any rain. it looks like for the entire weekend. We'll keep one boundary offshore to the south and east and then we'll have a front approaching from the west by the end of the weekend.

[00:04:10]But looks like a dry weekend to me. One last thing uh to put on your radar, tropical storm Bertha is still turning down in the Gulf. Uh it's gaining strength. It it probably will not reach hurricane strength, but uh nonetheless, it's going to be sort of moving from uh east to west over the next several days and probably enter uh somewhere in the Texas coastline uh over the next few days, probably by Friday. I don't think this is going to be a major deal down there. Most of the the wind and the rain is actually on the south side of the storm. So I again I think most of it will happen over the open Gulf and not over the Gulf Coast states. So yeah, lots going on. Uh obviously tonight we'll follow the thunderstorms and where they track. Jacob will be on at 5 and 6 tonight and Eric later on to give you an update. But 7day actually looks great by Friday and Saturday. Looks like another beautiful weekend. Again, low humidity for the entire time and temperatures uh in the low 80s. So, not much to complain about there. Once we get through tonight's uh, you know, rough patch, then we're going to be kind of home free for a while.

[00:05:07]>> All right. Yep. All the sun we saw there, it makes us feel better about what we're about to deal with.

[00:05:10]>> That's right. Yes, [laughter] >> Terry. Thank you. Tonight, Red Sox have a chance to have the franchise record for most wins in a row at 15. The one and only other time this happened. Let me set the scene for you. It was 1946.

[00:05:28]Harry Truman was president and a loaf of bread costs just a dime. So, you can see why everyone is so excited, right? It's been a minute. The excitement is building across Red Sox nation as WBZ's Paul Burton shows us.

[00:05:44]>> 80 years ago, a Boston Red Sox team led by these four legends you see behind me went on a 15game winning streak in 1946.

[00:05:52]That record still stands today, which is why Red Sox nation is at an all-time high because the Red Sox have won 14 in a row in tonight if they beat Baltimore.

[00:06:02]They will tie that all-time winning streak record. Red Sox fans are fired up. I spoke with many went to last night's game and they described it as electric. So many fans arrived early here at Fenway Park just to soak in this history, soak in this moment, and they can't wait for the game to unfold tonight. Let's hope the weather holds off in Boston. [00:06:26]>> It is day two of jury selection in the Lindsay Clancy trial. The Ducksbury woman accused of killing her three children. WBC's Christina Rex is at the courthouse in Plymouth with the very latest. Outside the courthouse in Plymouth where jury selection is underway for day two of Lindsay Clancy's murder trial. Now, on day one, five jurors were seated, and as of this recording, four additional jurors have been seated at this point, meaning there are a total of nine jurors seated for this case. The goal is for there to be 18 jurors at the end of jury selection.

[00:06:59]At the end of the trial, only 12 jurors will actually deliberate, and the rest will be alternates, but the judge likes to keep the jury larger, especially because this trial is expected to take quite some time, just in case any jurors need to drop out over the course of the trial. Now, just a reminder what this is all about. Lindsay Clancy is a Ducksbury woman who's facing three counts of first-degree murder. She allegedly killed all three of her children, ages five and younger, back in January of 2023. And Clancy through her attorney has said she accepts responsibility for what happened and doesn't deny what happened. But her defense is that it happened because she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time this happened. One other note today is that her defense attorney filed a new motion asking for the amount of police, fire, and EMTs who responded to the scene that night to be limited.

[00:07:52]The amount of them who are allowed to testify for the prosecution to be limited. There are 18 on the witness list, meaning 18 potential first responders to testify, but he's asking the judge to limit the number who are allowed to testify to avoid cumulative or repetitive evidence that he thinks will be prejuditial to his client. [00:08:16]>> The US Army has released a photo of a US Army soldier killed in Iraq over the weekend. The Pentagon said a 30-year-old Sergeant Michael Emanuel Swinton of Fagetville, North Carolina, was killed during a controlled explosion to destroy an attack drone. Sentcom said a second service member was wounded in the same incident and treated for a minor injury.

[00:08:39]Last night, US Central Command carried out another wave of strikes against Iranian targets for the 10th day in a row. A proposal moving through the Massachusetts Senate could reshape what neighborhoods across the state look like. WBZ's Louisa Mohler explains.

[00:08:56]>> There's no doubt there's a housing crisis in Massachusetts. The price of homes is super expensive. Supply is certainly way lower than demand. And now the Senate wrapped in an economic development bill is trying to come up with some creative ways to address this.

[00:09:14]One of these suggestions is getting rid of single family zoning. So what does that mean? Most of the residential properties in Massachusetts are zoned for single family homes. Homes that just have one family. This would not get rid of single sing single family homes but give people the opportunity anywhere in the state to end up building duplexes uh two family homes instead of single family homes. Now housing advocates say this is just one tool in the toolbox to combat this housing crisis. But people who oppose this say this could mess with the identity of certain communities that they don't want the state to push their policies on local municipalities. This could come up for a vote as early as Thursday in Austin. I'm Louisa Mohler, WBZ News.

[00:10:05]A big disruption to the morning commute.

[00:10:07]Shuttle buses have replaced trains on part of the Red Line, impacting thousands of riders. And for the next 10 days, service will be suspended from Park Street in downtown Boston to the end of the line at Elwife in Cambridge.

[00:10:20]The MBTA says the closure would allow them to perform critical track work, but it's creating quite a headache for riders as WBZ's Mike Sullivan shows us.

[00:10:30]I'm Mike Sullivan here at Harvard Square where these people are getting ready to get on a bus because the Red Line is shut down for the next 10 days. The MBTA saying it's necessary so they can do work on the tracks. We hopped onto one of the buses and talked to people what's been like today. One person told us that they planned a trip outside of the state to try and avoid these 10 days. Someone else telling us they just tried to all lot enough time to get where they had to go. The MBTA says it could take potentially 70 minutes to get from Ale to Park Street. But the good news is the buses are free during that time. In Boston, I'm Mike Sullivan, WBZ News.
