Funda Institute Misotrac - Revision (Module 1 - 7) and PoE Q & A SessionAdded:
What to do?
Let's just wait a little bit for others to join us. We'll start. exactly at um 9:30.
Hi, good morning Gillang.
Please let me know if you've got audio problems. If you cannot hear what I'm saying.
Thank you, Nonanta. Thank you so much for confirming that you can hear me.
Uh it's now 9:30 and we can start. Uh welcome everybody to the live session. I hope you're having a good weekend and I would like to also confirm that I'm feeling much better today. I'm much better than what I was last week for the whole of the week and I'm glad to be back and we can see how we can move on with the learning since we are a little bit behind because of my absence since I was not around for the whole of last week. Yeah. So, I requested that you compile questions related to the learning that we've covered so far which is um day one up to day 10. H that is your module one up to module 7. So is there any questions on what what we've covered so far? I'm waiting for questions so that we can discuss together the questions. Remember that um we are only going to revise module 1 to 7 and when we meet again uh before the the day before the final assessment which will be on the 28th then we'll be doing the remaining modules which will be module 8 up to module 11.
So I'm here to take questions related to the learning content.
Okay. Um if you look on to your module one um I believe I've shared the screen for module one um introduction to mining safety.
Is there any questions on introduction to mining safety?
Guys, I rely entirely on you for questions cuz I don't want to answer questions that I have not been asked.
So, I'll be going module by module taking questions.
Okay. Um, let's hear you saying you need me to explain about module two, but we currently on module one. I want to make sure that before I move on to module two, we have um covered everything on module one.
Okay. Um Moete Mete is saying um how many marks is the final exam? It's out of 100 marks and for a duration of um 160 minutes which is your 2 hours 30 minutes.
So the total mark for the final exam is 100.
Okay. Um guys is saying module one is sorted. I think people are stuck on module two. So if everybody's saying we are okay with module one then it's fine.
We can move on to onto module two.
Okay. I'm going to share module two. the screen.
So module 2 is the overview of mining industry. Um 5.1 is the mining industry in South Africa. That is the whole overview and um that covers all the minerals that we we are handling in the country that we are exploring and the de historical develop development of mining the economic importance and the major minerals in South Africa and the structure of the mining industry our regulatory bodies labor organizations and the regulatory framework which is our mine health and safety act, the minerals and petroleum resources development act and the occupational health and safety act. So when it comes to uh m the mining industry the main uh act that uh guides the industry is the mine health and safety act along with the minerals and uh mineral and petroleum resources development act but our main legislation is mine health and safety act in terms of safety and there we've got the safety challenges in the South African mining industry. Please remember that we've got um different types of uh mining uh uh activities. We've got your open cast and we've got underground mining and the hazards that come with each and every with each of these um methods of mining.
They they differ. So the challenges will also not be the same on the basis of whether it's an open cast or whether it's um underground mining. The hazards will be different.
So that is just an overview. I need you to ask me specific questions so that when I answer I can be specific answer a specific question.
I think I've also I've already answered that we will be writing out of 100 marks and we are now on module two. Can I have specific questions on module two? I need to know what it is in particular that you do not understand.
Okay, Leuhan says if I have any questions about module 2, you need me to share them. Um, I have I had not compiled any questions on any module, but I can make it my work to do that and share them with you later on. So, I'll make a note here that I'll compile a few questions for you to test yourselves and um see how much you've learned on module 2 so far. But guys, also remember that um we've got questions inside the the learner guide itself that test how much you've learned and how much you know on what you have covered. So, over and above that, if you still want me to compile more questions, I will do that.
Okay, the other question says, "Buffed is saying morning. Will we be writing online?" Oh, yes, you will certainly be writing online.
And Tiamo is asking for uh common strata hazards. Okay, let me make notes of all these questions. Common strata hazards and uh questions related to Yeah, my desk is very small guys. I [laughter] want to put my book here. I want to put my diary here so that I can take some notes and my table is very small.
The questions aren't related to this module on question. They are talking about constructor control and stuff.
Okay.
Okay.
So basically what we are having a problem the problem that we are having here with module 2 is that the p questions are not related to to the content which is inside our learner guide.
All right.
Guys, please excuse me cuz I'm still taking the questions. I just want to compile um a document that answers all these questions. Or do you would you rather we go through the questions um question by question? I don't know because I was thinking cuz uh others are also saying they want questions related to module 2 that they can use for revision purposes.
Um, what time will the exam be? That will be communicated.
I have not uh decided what time we're going to write. I'm going to have to go through my schedule and then I'll let you know what time we'll be writing.
Um how many% does the POE contribute to the final exam? It contributes 20%. And 80% is your final assessment.
And can you please explain the safety culture? Okay. Safety culture.
Okay.
I'm going to write down all these questions and I'm going to answer question by question once I've taken down all the questions and at some point I'm going to request that you stop asking questions so that I can handle the questions that have been asked and over and above that then I will also create um a document even if it's just a small word document that answers the questions that are here but I'll also go through them question by question so I've got a question here on ground Instability happens when the soil I don't know if this is a statement or a question but it says ground instability happens when the soil or rock beneath where is that Um, I saw something about grand instability.
I don't know what that was if that was a question or there was a statement. I'm trying to look for it. Remember that I'm busy compiling the questions. So, please give me the questions.
So, what does data control mean and what is its impact?
And what is its impact in mining safety?
Okay.
Okay. Somebody says, "What causes ground instability?
Guys, let us interact. If you've got a clue to some of these questions, please by all means you can assist with an answer in your comment section and we will go through the answer and let you know if it is accurate or not or if there's anything wrong with your answer.
So this is interactive learning. Like I said uh we are all going to to be communicating. It's a two-way communication but I I will compile answers for all the questions still.
[snorts] The difference between mechanical and economic hazard.
Okay, we've got a question on mechanical and economic hazard.
What is a fire triangle and what are the precautions needed to be followed?
What is a fire triangle?
Uh please be specific. So when you say the precautions that need to be followed um are you referring to precautions uh during a a fire in an event of a fire?
I will take it that's what you mean.
cuz your question is incomplete.
Okay.
Um, another question it says, where do we find notes about strata control?
Starter control notes.
I will share those because they are not in your learner guide. like as you said that there is uh some cor some things not correlating between the POE and the learner guide right the early entry examination we do on daily basis before entering the working area. What is the hierarchy of ranks of people doing the examination and what are the steps to do it? The early entry examination we do on a daily basis before entering the working area.
What is the hierarchy of ranks of people doing the examination? I saw you talking about the workplace inspection in the hierarchy of ranks. I I I take it you're referring to the jobs uh the responsible people that will go into the area to do the inspection.
Uh ground instability is caused ground instability is when a rock or soil can't hold up itself anymore. It can be caused by weak rock type blasting or vibrations. That's correct.
uh during blasting activities the the rock muscles they become loosened up because that the whole purpose of blasting is to loosen up the rocks so that we are able to extract the ore that uh we will be looking for. So the ground will become instable and then we will need to do things like rock support uh to keep the rocks in in in in a stable position. So, we we are now at that fire triangle. Um I seem to be battling to [laughter] scroll down.
So, yeah.
Uh guys, any other questions? Cuz I'm compiling questions.
I'm compiling all the questions so that I can make a structured um response to the questions.
Somebody t says ground instability is caused by heavy machinery, blasting or traffic can make the ground move or crack, but it's mostly caused by blasting activities, production activities.
Drilling can also cause uh uh ground instability. Do remember that before we do blasting, there is drilling activities first before uh there can be blasting happening.
Okay, somebody's asked answering the fire triangle. So the fire triangle are fuel, heat, and oxygen and precautions is to adhere to PPE.
H well, yes, the fire triangle is fuel, heat, and oxygen. Without one of these elements, you cannot have a fire. But the most important thing when it comes to fire precaution is to ensure that you maintain good housekeeping because you need to look at your common causes of fires which is poor housekeeping um flammable gases and vapors. The presence of flammable gases and vapors.
If you're working in a confined space and you've got the presence of uh vapors, those they you need to ventilate properly before you can do any hot work activities and uh PPE. Yes, certainly at all times, but it is not a major precaution when it comes to um fire safety. Yeah. Smoking also you need to be smoking in designated areas.
Um uh storage of uh flammable chemicals also they have to be stored in designated areas and they have to be labeled and people must be taken for training on how to handle a safe a fire.
You need to have a fire warden in place.
you have to have your evacuation plans and and and and the list is quite long.
So, I'll make a separate document like I said regarding uh all the questions that you're asking and probably maybe also a an audio.
How does monitoring improve safety performance?
Somebody is saying okay to before I go to the scope a very interesting question that comes up the whole time.
So um chlorine torch cutting is a metal cutting process that uses a high temperature flame and oxygen to cut through material especially steel. Okay. I didn't see the question on torch cutting. Yes, that is what torch cutting is. It's um when they using oxy oxygen and acetylene uh gases to cut metal. Yeah. the same gases that they use for welding but in this instance it will be an open flame to cut through metal.
Okay, I will also touch on uh torch cutting also just to give some clarity on that and um am I going to give you a scope? Yes, I am going to give you guys a scope. I will not leave you in the dark or in the cold. I'll touch a little little bit and give you some hints as to what is likely to be asked and the structure of the examination on our last day of revision.
Next week uh on the 27th I will give you the structure of the examination, how the examination will be structured and the dos and don'ts of the exam. So ground instability is also caused by bad support of rocks and uh cysmic um events. So when you you burying down rocks underground, you need to follow the bearing steps and wash and wash it. I'm bad typing family. I don't know. Are you talking about um the tableafula? What you referring to?
Please be explain what you're saying.
Yeah, but in any case, she is correct when she says rock instability is caused by bad support of rocks and cysmic events. Um, cysmic events are your movements underground, your kind of like um uh what you call this thing forgot what is cysmic events. But it's more like your when you when your when your ground is shaking, you know. Um I'll I'll come with the uh geological term for when the ground is shaking.
It's it's some events that happen from time to time, but they are mostly prone in the mining environment.
Yeah, your cismic events is things like your earthquakes, man. Um those kind of things they happen the earthquakes happen a lot in in the underground because already we have got um you know the the ground it's not in its natural form anymore because it has been tempered with. So we get a lot of um systemic events in the form of earthquakes underground.
Um, ground instability is typically caused by factors that weaken or shift surface material commonly include natural factors, human activities, and soil or rock conditions. That's correct. And um, examples of health, environment, safety, hazards. Okay. What is root cause analysis?
Uh, is it okay to use answers from Google?
I was explaining to somebody the other day saying um you know you you can use answers from anywhere provided that the answers are accurate. So your answer should mostly be based on your understanding but your your your main guide is your learner guide that is your main source of information of of um point of reference rather let's put it like that. So if you have to refer to anything that would be your learner guide but you can use answers that are based on your understanding. So you don't have to put it exactly as it is in the learner guide.
Uh root cause is a systematic method of identifying the underlying reasons for an incident or problem to pre to prevent it from happening again. That is correct. A recourse is a method of identifying the main causes of an incident, not your superficial or your rather your immediate causes. So there's methods that are used to to conduct a root cause analysis. I'll take down that as well and we'll include it in the notes that I'm going to share. I'm only going to share um an audio on the questions that have been asked. Anything that's not part of this I am not going to include. I take it this is module one up to module 7 cuz we are no longer on module 2 only. Now we have moved root cause analysis.
Objectives of the safety function.
Uh objectives of the safety function I'm just going to go through your questions again and see if there's anything that I may have uh omitted so that I can cover everyone.
Okay.
Somebody's saying, "Can I send you a downloadable learner guide?"
Unfortunately, not. The learner guide is for sale. It's 350 rand. I I think I mentioned it in the last um live interaction that if you want to purchase the learner guide uh we can send you the payment link and you pay your 350 and we will career it to you. So it is not downloadable and I will still share the notes like I said I was going to share the notes and I'm just now scrolling through the questions so that I can see if there's anything that I may have missed.
Okay.
Okay. What causes ground instability?
Okay, let us quickly go through all the modules and see if you may be having questions on anything that we didn't go through. So, right. Um, Module two, importance of mining and of safety and mining environments.
Module three, hazards in mining, sorry, module three, role of mining safety officer. And module four is the OS principle. Module five is hire.
Module six is PPE sorry legal framework and module 7 is PPE. So please give me all those questions so that um I can go and compile your audio and also the notes based on the questions.
Somebody's saying, "Please consider us those who will be on duty when setting the time and the date for the exam."
Unfortunately, that's not that's out of my control. So, the exam will certainly be on the 28th and the time I would like to believe that the exam will be opened throughout the day.
Uh I will confirm that with you when we come back for the next session.
Objectives of the safety functions. State two uh duties of employer under MHSA.
Duties of the employer under the mining health and safety act.
And can you explain further about ethics in the context of mining safety, work ethics, right? And then there's a question that says uh ma'am please consider okay I've gone through that we will not be able to uh you know set a separate uh we will not be able to schedule a separate exam for those that will be on duty. The exam will be open throughout the day of the 28th. So at some point you need to make time to write the exam. What is the importance of compliance in mining?
Answer is to prevent u fatalities and injuries. Avoid occupational diseases, legal and financial protection. Okay.
Okay. Importance of compliance in mining. Yes, that has been answered but I will also include it and the difference between active and reactive monitoring.
Um the difference between active and reactive monitoring.
Um active and reactive.
What percentage is the minimum pass mark? The pass mark is 60%.
And there's a question in on SOPs, standard operating procedures.
What is it that you want to know about SOPs? Please be specific.
What are the function? What are the limitations of PPE?
Limitations of PPE and objectives of safety function.
Objectives of safety function prevent accident. Okay, that's an answer. So the objectives of safety function is to prevent accidents and incident, protect employees employees health, protect property and equipment, ensure legal compliance, promote safe safe work practices and identify and control hazards.
duties of the employer under the MHSA, maintaining a safe working environment and providing necessary training. Thank you guys for the answers those who are on the ball and answering the questions.
What is OS monitoring?
Can anyone answer that? What is OS monitoring? If you've got the answer for any of these questions, please by all means you can include it in the comment section.
Somebody's uh you came in late. Uh nurse Shabangu, I have already mentioned that I'm going to give you the scope on the day before the final assessment on the 27th or would you rather have it earlier than that because that was my plan because we're going to have another session where we'll be revising the remaining chapters. So the plan was to give you the scope on that day. I don't know you you are allowed to to comment and let me know how how soon would you like to have the scope but I don't see the purpose of giving you the scope before we have even concluded the learning to me personally it doesn't make sense occupational health and safety monitoring involves tracking workplace environments safety systems and employee well-being by I mean to prevent and accidents, illnesses and legal breaches.
Yes. But you can further tell us or elaborate to say how is this uh tracking done. So it's normally done through your audits and your um inspections.
So that is how the monitoring is done and it involves it is does certainly involve tracking workplace environments, safety systems and employee wellbeing by actively um you know identifying hazards. As you do your your your your audits and inspections you will be identifying hazards and that will take you to those steps of um your hire process.
Right guys, I think we have covered a lot of questions that will keep me busy to compile a structured I want to compile actually more of a structured um audio for the answers to these questions.
I will post a link on the on our WhatsApp group where I I would have recorded the answers to the questions and have having been a bit more elaborate.
I hope that's fine with everyone.
We will be asked sections such as appointment sections of the she representative and their requirements before nominating amanza team and PPE sections.
I'm not sure I understand the questions.
We will be asked sections such as the appointment sections of the representatives and their requirements before nominations amongst the team and PPE sections. Okay, I see you want to know whether you will be asked questions that are that want you to refer to to the act itself and say on which section of the act uh are you required to appoint um a safety a safety rep for example? No, you are not going to get that type of a question. But I will verify. I will make a note of this one also whether you are going to have questions that want you to refer to specific sections of the act.
Citation act citation.
I don't think I've seen a question like that before but it can happen but I will make sure that um I do answer whether you are going to you need to know this the citation you should be able to site the act OHSing refers to the continuous review assessment and o of occupational health and safety activities within the workplace. Yes.
Importance of integrating health and safety.
Sorry when we say integrating integrating it into please complete your questions but anyway I'll take a note of integrating rating health and safety.
into company activities or daily operations. Yes, I'll take it.
That's what it means.
Right. Uh, how does mining impact the environment?
I think this an answer can come out of some of you because I' I've already seen that some of you have got answers.
Um because I'm not really this is not about me. It's not about me providing answers for everything. So it's interactive. If anybody feels confident that they can answer a question, please by all means answer on the comment section.
Right.
Somebody says mining impacts the environment through habitat destruction.
Correct. Soil erosion and severe chemical contamination. That is very true. Including water contamination also.
Okay.
A safety audit is a systematic examination of a workplace of workplace activities, equipment and safety pro procedures to determine whether health and safety standards are being followed.
That is correct. How does mining impact the environment? The answer is there at the bottom. It is very correct. Uh ma'am can you please send a scope early so that we can know what to study or concentrate on for modules that we already revised. I think I will be it will be easy that way guys like I said anyway I don't know I will I will I will share the scope but I don't want to share it too early. I will share it next week around Tuesday. I don't want to share it too early before you do the other modules because if I share the scope, you are not going to study the rest of the content that's inside your learner guide. You are only going to be looking for those who have not yet finished the learner guide. You are only going to be looking at what I would have like highlighted as the scope. That is my fear because we are not learning to forget. We are not learning uh questions that are going to come out in the final assessment. We are learning the content everything that is inside the book. Remember that this is important for us when we go to the workplaces. We are they are not we are not only going to do what we wrote in the exam. So we're going to holistically be doing everything that is expected of a safety officer. So that is the reason the main reason why I don't want to give you the scope. Imagine if I were to give you the scope when we starting with with the course just at the beginning. I'm already giving you the scope. I'm actually I'll actually be saying do not study. Just go and do what what I say you should be doing in preparation for the exam.
Somebody says can we have the scope on the 26th? Okay, I can agree to the 26th but not yeah at the beginning of the course. Okay, the 26th is a day before the 27th a day before the revision.
Okay. Um we are going to write at home guys please come when you join when when I ask you to join the session please join on time because I don't want to spend too much time repeating the same questions and you know uh elaborate on further on the hierarchy of controls I'll make a note on that hierarchy of controls And do we need our own data or we will be given Wi-Fi on the day of the exam?
You will not be given Wi-Fi. We won't be sub uh supplying with Wi-Fi. Remember, if you're writing from home, you need to have your own data in place. So, at the at our facilities, we do have Wi-Fi, but sometimes it buffers because of it will be carrying too many people. Remember that our groups are very big and as a result you need to ensure that at least as one as a bare minimum you've got your own data considering that everything is coming from our end.
I take it we have arrived at the end of our Q&A session.
Is there anything else I want to close it in closing? I want to know if there's anyone that still has a question on module one up to module 7.
Are you happy?
Are you all happy?
Okay, I will send the notes on module 7.
But module 7 is very basic and very straightforward. Is it's PPE if I'm not mistaken. Guys, please do not rely too much on the notes because remember that they are a summarized version of version of um the learner guide. So you need to have in indepth understanding of the content. So the notes are just there to you know to summarize things and give you a brief idea of what's going on. So what is the purpose of an investigation?
Guys, you know what happens? Snap.
Sometimes the reason why I literally write down these questions, sometimes if I leave the questions having noted them down, they take a while for them to reappear on YouTube. So that is the reason why I write down these questions that you are asking. Okay. Some a very critical question risk ranking.
I will cover that as well.
Uh consequences of non-compliance.
So somebody says many of us are in the physical class. we will be will we be given we will be able to write exam in the class since we are too many um I will clear that out with the office guys I don't want to jump the gun and find myself saying things and tomorrow you know not being able to you know or be held accountable for what I said in this live session so I'm going to find out from uh the office whether you are allowed to write from home even though you are in the physical class some says we are happy just never of the exam guys don't worry I am going to record the audio of all the questions that were asked in this session so that um you know you can have it's something to replay if you still want to go back and replay the audio you can replay the audio so I am certainly going to do that for you and I will also share um a document I'll also type if I get a chance. I don't want to commit too much.
I might just type the answers or I'm only going to do the audio. I'll see which is which. But I'm more likely to do the audio than to type the answers.
Task observation is a proactive safety management tool used to monitor workers as they perform their duties.
Yes, that is what it is. Plan task observation.
Uh what time are we going to write the exam? I will communicate that one. Dust control is important because it protects workers health, improves safety, protects equipment and reduces environmental pollution.
Thank you very much guys for the session safety committee. That is the last one.
I'm no longer taking questions.
