In State of Origin Game 1, Queensland established early dominance through passionate, intense play in the first 10-15 minutes, outmuscled New South Wales particularly in the middle positions, and scored early tries through Sam Walker and Tom Flaggler. New South Wales appeared lethargic and conservative, playing too cautiously. The turning point came when Queensland's numerical advantage (13v13) forced New South Wales to throw off their self-imposed shackles, leading to a dramatic comeback. The controversial send-off of Kalyn Ponga for a shoulder charge to the head changed the complexion of the game, demonstrating how disciplinary decisions can significantly impact match dynamics. This game illustrates how team energy, intent, and tactical awareness in the opening minutes can determine momentum in high-stakes rugby league matches.

ORIGIN REVIEW! Cleary’s Brilliance saves Laurie? 😳 + Ponga SEND OFF debate 🗣️ | NRL 360 FULL SHOW追加:
Welcome to NRL 360. Rub your league from every angle. Game one is done and dusted. Queensland jumped out of the blocks and with the 56 minutes to go, it looked all too hard for the Blues until one massive moment.
State of Origin game number one on Fox League.
Brighton has lost control of it. Another Blues era inside their own half. Red to the right. THERE'S THE WALKER KICK.
There's the first try. New South Wales pay a hefty price. Last tackle. I don't know where the pass come from. TOM FLAGGLER HAS SCORED for the Maroons.
Bren now lift the monster KICK THROUGH.
THEY'RE WINNING THE RACE. THEY ARE RIPPING AND SHREDDING THE Blues here.
They roll left. Cleary kicks early.
Looking for Young. There's your response. Clearing first chance he gets.
Robson now deflects it off in 12. I think they knocked it on and that's all.
Murray may have revenge or not. What was the contact?
>> Shoulder charge direct to the head. I'm thinking that's a send off. I get that mate. This is in the head there. There's no attempt to tackle. I know what you're saying, but this is an illegal play.
>> Stand by. Stand by.
>> This is a shoulder charges. Makes direct contact to the head. Julia, you're off.
>> It's Sandy.
>> I cannot believe this.
>> Argue all we want, but it it is what it is. Like that's called I haven't got any problems with it.
>> Right side clear. He's going to score.
>> Comes flying through. Boy, did he get that on the inside of Hamoli Olawatu.
And this is going to be taken off them.
Kick and chase monsters there. So are the blows. So man they're brought on Superman or >> over the top in the clear. Strange is there. Hurdles one and scores for the Blues.
>> QUICK PLAY THE BALL. BLUES WITH Clare Teddesco on foot with one man ADVANTAGE AND THEN OUT OF that L comes up with a mighty play.
Brley blows all score.
>> The Maroons down to 12 hanging on.
>> 139 on the clock. Clearing bombs. It may be their last chance.
has come to go.
Unbelievable.
The Blues had a night of controversy.
Game one up in the series.
>> What a game of rugby league. What a game of state of origin. The New South Wales Blues were gone. Somehow they came back and they got the job done. Joining me again, the great Gordon Talis. Let's bring in two of the brightest minds in our game. Matty John's and Coop.
>> I like he's in a suit. How good is this?
>> You two are looking to a funeral.
>> That's Gordy. He's dressed in black today. He's got the black on. Had the suit on.
>> What about that though, guys? They pretty much stole that one. New South Wales. How did you two see it?
>> Oh, it was a hard game to actually analyze because New South Wales just delivered the first 20 minutes to Queensland on a platter. And to be fair, New South Wales needed something because they weren't going to chase down the scoreboard playing 13 v13 and then the lightning rod moment that it was um just it played into Queensland hands all that the way that Sam Walker controls through the 20 m zone early tries on the ball got the pressure on the scoreboard going um and they just play with more intensity. There was something missing at the start of the game for New South Wales. They were clinical trying to get their game on whereas Queensland were passionate, had intent. Um and I still don't know what's going to happen in game two because that was just entertainment plus.
>> Yeah, it's good. Yeah. Well, I had huge concerns when like New um New South Wales were just that was so lethargic at the start of the game. You don't want to say ambush. We say that all the time like you know it's coming but I think they they underestimated the intensity Queensland played >> and the real concern for me was the Flegler try when they scored under the post there. I I I just went mate this is going to be anything. There's no doubt and we'll talk in a minute after the uh the Ponga situation. It was really funny. It was more than just a numerical advantage. You could actually see like change total change in attitude. It forced New South Wales just to throw off the shackles. Self-imposed shackles.
They played too conservative. Meanwhile, Queensland started to tread water, tried to defend it. And and in 2026 with origin club football test match, you just can't do it.
>> And they had success early from playing footy. That's where they were. They had the advantage and were way better than New South Wales. A tough loss for Queensland that they go.
>> Yeah, but I was really proud like you know watching it. I think you know the last you know 20 odd minutes. Uh the way that we defended uh early I thought our ball movement was so sharp. It's normally a game two or game three but they combined really quick to have a new number seven. Um but our defense kept us in the game for a long time. I was you know like Max Path our smaller guys I thought were really good fast through the middle got us off to a good start.
Um, and then defensively we just put everything out there but just weren't good enough in the end.
>> Why were Queensland so good to start the game and why were New South Wales so poor?
>> Um, I think there's something about the energy from transitioning from the sheds when you're amped up ready to go. Then there's a flat spot around the anthem in terms of having to control yourself. But I think Queensland um, yes, they got the possession and the scoreboard. You see Sam Walk a couple of tries or try assists, but I thought it was PL. I thought it was Flegler. I thought their line speed was actually physically more dominant than what New South Wales middle fords were. And that's that's where it was set up for me because those errors from New South Wales. Yes, they were poor ball control, but there was something about the want and desire from Queensland in the first 10 or 15 minutes that outmuscled New South Wales, particularly in the middle.
>> See it that way.
>> I agree with him.
>> Thank you, Mr. Johns.
>> What about the What about the coaches?
>> What's something that both coaches did well? Uh Billy, mate, look, Billy has proven himself. I I honestly believe if he decides to be a full-time coach, he'll be one of the greats. Like if you look at the side, what he did with selections, um he generally gets right.
Secondly, tactically, like look at the first two tries like from the kicks coup that you know, monster, they were Billy, they were Billy's tries. You can see it was something he spotted in the theater when he sits there and watches it. done me one way back, grab a hook because Tedesco, you generally chases cross. He nailed that. The other thing he does we underestimate is the ability to elevate players, particularly young players, particularly left field selections. Like look, that that performance from Sam Walker >> was one of the great origin debuts. It's the best I've seen him kick like long kicking, Maxi Pl.
>> Uh just it can go on and on over the years.
>> Little tactical thing. I know it was 101 Billy Slater is Kalin Ponga was on his kick return stepping back off his right going to the short side pick up SE Cola who made a couple of dens and line breaks. That is Billy as a fullback.
He's sitting there watching a bit of a [ __ ] New South Wales kick return or or kick chase. He found that and Ponga executed. So there's there's a little bit of tactics where Billy's beautiful mind of rugby league comes to the four.
>> And I got to say Lo he people criticized him for the bench. I I thought he >> I thought he used it well.
>> He he really used it well when he put Kamar and Victor on. It was exactly the right time. Murray, I mean, Murray just gave us a little bit of traction. Uh, Victor gave us a bit of he may got wrong. Lori, >> uh, I thought we played firstly too conservative. Way too conservative. I think in yardage we got to take more, you know, push the ball to the edges, take the easy meters more. Way too conservative. The other thing was we spoke about the top and like this is hard to criticize because we weren't in the sheds >> but just there's like Gordon that lost art of emotion. Yeah.
>> You know to get yourself up for big games and you you take it it's easy to talk in hindsight but I always look at the size when they burst out of the tunnel and I saw Queensland really come out. New South Wales I just thought okay >> they're cool and they're calm and they're collected probably too much.
>> Did that because Moses got reeled out late. Would that have changed the way they played? does it guys in the house.
Uh >> it's a balance in acting origin because too much emotion you you're redlinining.
You don't get the clinical stuff that you need to but then if you sit below the the mark you get smashed and taken on the back foot. So you have to get it right. Billy's proven that he's got his starts right. Lori needs to improve on that. But I will give Lori a big rap. I think he got the interchanges perfect.
particularly Casey Mlan coming on and a couple of others towards after the Ponga thing like there was a zip uh about those changes >> ju just quickly too to tell another one we haven't spoken a lot about Adam Fenil Blake and Blake put them on together as a combination that Krenella combination you see Fenil Blake was just his second stint was a lot better just bumping through Brayley scooping and going just little nuances like that he did well >> Gordy should Kalin Palmer have been sent off >> um I would say no. I I I think a send off in my time and this time is the last resort. Like I really think it's the last option >> for a referee, but I can't argue with it. Right.
>> The only thing that is on my mind is when the referee overrules the video ref. So when it goes to a bunker and they're sort of saying, "Hey, I think it's sin binning is sufficient and he overrules it." That's the part that I'm a little bit puzzled with.
>> I thought it was a send off. I I thought when when I first saw a Gordy >> 10 in the bin, I'm thinking 10 in the bin. The more I looked at it, I'm thinking, you know, Kalin comes in direct contact to the head, forceful.
The more replays you see like this, you see he actually does the the shoulder hits the head. He doesn't wrap the arm around. Uh he's a good 15 m out here, so Kalin's got plenty of time to readjust uh his position. Uh I didn't see too many mitigating circumstances given Kalin had heaps of time to change where his body was at and try and get himself in a right shoulder tackle instead of >> he tried to tackle Latrella at >> he did maybe maybe there's a bit of a technique problem where he doesn't use his right shoulder. That's a right shoulder tackle.
>> Well when he played six remember played six in Newcastle had a lot of problems with his technique and >> take the bias away. Take the bias away that that is right on the precipice of send off or sinbin and I can't argue against it. Yeah, you could sit there and sort sort of >> millimeter differences here, there, and everywhere, but when I saw it live, I thought, uhoh, trouble.
>> Tell who was glad he went off. It was mate Katon.
>> That's what I was going to say. Tell us about that, Matt.
>> Well, I tell you what, another thing Slate did really well. He used to frustrate me at Newcastle. Kalin's got his sweet spot. He loves to get the ball flat to his left and he gets it and he can chop off chop on the inside or he can goosey and go. And what he did with Katon just kept targeting him all the time in around that third last defender and he just and Katon was all at sea. He was sliding. He was going backwards. He was taking show and goes. And one point you'll see it was a uh a kick reception.
And Kalin goes up and he was sliding.
This time this is one here. This leads to Lindsay and he turns turns in catches him again. Now Lori's got a decision to make here because we know now that Kalin's going to be playing in game two. You know, he's got to be he's got to be totally confident in the Canon can get the job done. If he's not, then someone else has got to move.
>> Do they reshuffle it? Mlan, we mentioned before, he was >> so good offelievable. Changed the game.
His touches were all quality. He went to the game, Matty, do you pick him for game two?
>> I I They got to find a place for him.
Whe it's on the wing, you've just got to You can't ignore that performance. He was just, you know, reminded me like actually reminded me of like Lori as a young Lori Daly just the way he holds himself and his aggression. Um on an in an ideal world Braith if Latrell's fit I go Latrol left. He's got the aura. He's got that like aura about him and I put Kryon over to that side to sort of try to take care of >> Yeah, I think that's that's the key is Latril's fitness there. Um Mlan like you to dominate like Sam Walker did in your debut. You need this inner swagger and sort of almost arrogance to a point that says you can do it. For a kid to sit on the bench for 60 minutes and then the ball goes up in driving rain. He just leapt up and his two catches put New South Wales on the front foot and the momentum continued. Imagine he dropped one of them. That is New South Wales on the back foot and every meter counts and they probably don't get to that opportunity.
>> To put into perspective, you had to kite making the errors early. He's come on.
You said it. Young kid 60 minutes in and just goes bang. Now, what did we think of Nathan's performance?
>> Oh, well, you know, like I tell you what, leading up to Ken's dismissal, you could almost feel the opinion starting to form on Nathan. He's not good enough.
We shown you great club player. Great great club player. Average seven at Origin. But one thing about Nathan, like I I'll say it like this because how can I say this? Okay, I'll talk in gambling terms, right? Um, when you're a playmaker in big games, you know, Blakes know what it's about. The first 60 minutes in these big games, it's like in gambling terms, you're playing the Pokés, right?
>> In the last 20 minutes, you're in the High Rollers room. It's like almost like a different game. And one thing about Nathan, you see grand finals and these big occasions, mate, when he's in the high rollers room, he's Kerry Packer.
>> He he gets it done. And I thought first 60 60 minutes he could be forgiven cuz mate his forwards just had no traction whatsoever. I don't care you put Andrew John's Ricky Stewart Alan Lang out they don't impact it but the last 20 minutes like in 23 uh 2023 Graham finally got it done.
>> I think the criticism of Nathan's rubbish like he is so so good. There is moments that u only the trained eye see how good some of his plays were in that second half. Um, in the first half, yeah, it's hard to play off the back foot and get momentum. On the second half, when he realized he had the acceleration, he went for that 4020 kick. Like that is centimeter perfect in a big moment. And then Brayley gets out, that is going from ball player to ball runner mode. Um, and then the kick again, it was literally one meter from being good or bad. And that highlight reel catch from Tedesco, like there is some moments in Origin that will be on the top shelf for a long time. that sits alongside what Tedesco did.
>> Do do you always look for a 4020 in that moment? Like if you're a half, are you always looking for it?
>> Uh you're aware of it because you know that the fullback is isolated down to 12 players. You know that you have shift shape to the long side to bring up that winger and as soon as you see the disconnect between the winger and the fullback, it's time to hit the hit hit the footy.
>> Coops. You mentioned moments Maddie Ethan Strange. Oh, how good was he? I mean, he was everything Ricky told us he'd be at origin level and >> just took that leftsided players like >> they're just a little bit more difficult to handle. You know, that left hand carry and checks, but he just man, he's he's so strong. Yeah, that one he went through there was an obstruction when Hamal just they didn't quite get it right like he threw off monster there.
>> Um, superb performance.
>> Big one. Big some big decisions coming up.
>> What do they do? Cuz this is the million dollar question. This is a headache for Lori. It's a good headache.
>> Yeah.
>> I want to ask both of you, what would you guys do?
>> What I would say to Lori is this. I would say, Lori, back your own intuition. Do not pick the bloke that you think you'll get less less critic criticism around. Just pick the best bloke and just go with him. I think sometimes in the past, sometimes in New South Wales, the media, we can be so, you know, tearing, they go, you know what, I want to pick this bloke. But what I would do, Ethan was fantastic.
It's hard for me to say this. I would go Moses 6 and I go Ethan 14, but I'd make sure he gets long minutes.
>> I would do exactly the same. Don't do the popular vote. Do the one that's going to work. And I feel like the Clearary Moses combination is one that you can definitely rely on that when one's on, the other one's going to, you know, play second fiddle when the other one's up and step. Whereas Strange is just a ball runner. He's a go-getter.
He's the perfect 14. Sit him in 14, you got the best of both worlds.
>> Oh, I don't know. I don't know. But you know what? I could >> I thought his last 23 minutes was as good as Nathan Cle, >> but I thought he had about seven carries deeper. He made about 80 m. So when the game's on the line, you got a guy playing his first origin and he played to his strength. So even Moses didn't stick in New South Wales.
>> Even Moses preferred in for game one before he got injured. You changed now because Ethan Strange's performance.
>> I'm tempted to. Yeah.
>> Well, if he doesn't play, >> that was pretty special.
>> No. So this is the thing, right? If he doesn't play Moses between now and they say that it might be out for two weeks and he doesn't play and he's not training, what do you do? That's >> strange.
>> It comes down to circumstance. But if they're Moses was still the six before game one, I think he's still the six for game.
>> What about Sam Walker? How good was he?
>> Yeah, I thought he was really good.
Obviously, there was a lot of question marks and there was, you know, Ponga seven and you know, um, young young Clifford, I thought he was outstanding.
Like, you know, Sam, I think he can play off the cuff. I thought it was a real good knock for him. I thought his kicking game was great. Um, defensively, he just got up and got in their face.
And that's and that's what you can ask.
And I actually thought he was the best Queensland player.
>> One of the best field.
>> He's a brilliant little player. Like, uh, that first half um, kicking game, like I'm talking general play kicking.
That's the best I've seen Sam Walker kick. And then the game was set up for him to do things like this through the avalanche of good ball possession. You give him 20 play, the ball's in the red zone, he will set up a try through that kick. And then his presence forced Toesco go to the other side of the rock and what does monster do? Kick the ball down the other side.
>> Were you surprised at how good he was, Cubs? Honestly.
>> Yeah, I was. Um, look, you I make decisions based on the worst case scenario um and then hope for the best.
That's one thing Melmana taught me about origin. So, playing off the back foot, you know, how does Sam go defensively and all that, but no one ever denied his ability to do what he did once he gets near the draw.
>> All right, before you go, who goes on and wins the series?
>> New South Wales 3-0. Oh, 3-0.
>> Obviously, Queensland 2-1.
>> Queensland.
>> All right, man.
>> Well, that's the thing, you know, just quickly on that to finish, I'll say this. There's a temptation. They say never change a winning side.
>> Ponga doesn't get sent off, we don't win. And mate, I tell you what Slater's doing now. He's at his theater at home and he's coming for us.
>> He's watching you.
>> He's getting some tips.
>> Thank you, Maddie. Thank you, Cubs.
Great analysis. What a game it was. Up next, it's Brent Reed and Michael Caranas.
Cut ball cola dispenser. Cola runs in there. Was it a circle charge or he ran into pocket? They could be more heard about this. Now we got a little bit of Auntie Bachi origin style.
>> So here's the tack. Oh wow. Longer the arms dropped out of the tackle. That's the worry. Ash CL have a listen to this.
>> I get that. This is in the head there.
There's no attempt to tackle.
>> I know what you're saying, but this is an illegal play.
This is the shoulder charge. Makes direct contact to the head.
You're off.
Welcome back. Let's bring the journals in. Brent Reed and Michael Caranis and Rey last night. You had the ultimate dummy spit. You threw the toys out of the cot.
>> That's not entirely true. But anyway, >> you're carrying like a toddler. It's like you've gone You've had a bit of a sleep though, >> mate. I was surrounded by New South Wales gloating.
>> Yeah.
>> After they beat a 12-man team and played ordinary breath.
>> You said he shouldn't have been sent off too.
>> I don't think I actually said that. I don't think that's correct. I said I would have understand if they didn't send him off.
>> But now I look at it, bra, now I've seen some extra angles, including one on your Instagram feed. Um I can see why he got sent off.
>> Oh, so you can understand it. Yeah, >> you've had a sleep and you've >> Well, I never said he should have been sent off. I don't I'd love to see why I said that.
>> I may have said it. I got a bit there was a bit of a mist.
So look, did you see footage with the shoulder hitting the head? The only footage I saw was >> see to me it looks >> that footage was seen but then I've seen footage from behind to cooler from the other angle. I think from that angle yeah it looks as though there's um shoulder contact with the head and look in the modern game you can't do that. So I can understand why I sent him off.
>> Yeah I'm the same. I thought >> there it is here.
>> Yeah for my you know in the >> angle is the killer.
>> Yeah that's right. As as Ry said >> having been able to watch it again I thought I was comfortable with the decision last night. No doubt about that. But I thought actually Klein handled the situation really well was unfortunate, but that's not the the referee's prerogative is not to determine what the outcome may be from that decision. Right. So I have no issue with that. Um it obviously changed the complexion of the game because as Rey had touched on New South Wales were horrific up until that point, but rightful sendoff.
>> What was the bunker trying to tell him?
>> I think well you we could only give >> all the footy the clarified that today Gordy and what the bunker was saying is it's at least a send a sim. It's at least a sim. So they're saying at the very minimum it's a >> Let's have a listen now.
>> That's a shoulder charge to the head.
>> So that's a send off for me.
>> For me that's a send off. Shoulder charge to the head. A shoulder charge direct to the head, mate. I'm thinking that's a send off.
I get that. But he's hitting direct from the head. I get that, mate. But this is in the head there. There's no attempt to tackle. I know what you're saying, but this is an illegal play. Kalin, this is a shoulder charges. Makes direct contact to the head.
You're off.
>> A massive call by Ashley Klein to make by himself. Thoughts on this? I >> I actually love the way he handed it. He was clear. He was concise. He knew what he saw. And uh he was right. And the onfield referee, they're to be guided by the bunker. They're not to be told by the bunker what to do. At the end of the day, the decisions like that rest with the onfield referee. And I thought he got it right.
>> I think you could tell from the way he was talking that he had def definitive um view that there was contact with the head and shoulder contact with the technology to slow down cuz watching it live.
>> I would imagine it would have required the bunker to say no. There was no shoulder contact with the head. It was an accident or complete accident for him to change his mind and that's not what they told >> watching it live. Did it look like a send off? Did like >> I couldn't tell. I honestly it wasn't it wasn't a natural reaction where I saw it and I'm going that's an immediate send off right >> but yeah but he's a million times closer than I am and let's not forget I I don't know what the touch said not as well but compared to where I was I couldn't see if it was going to be >> but I'll push back on that cuz Gordy you and I we we say it all the time right we we say that you know referees they're the closest to it why why don't they make the calls more right we also say that >> we want referees to have more of a feel for the game right he's the boss not the bunker Right. At the end of the day, he makes the call.
>> Ex players all over every commentary teams and podcasts say all the time, referees, just have some fuel for the game. You know, you're there. Make a call. Back yourself. And here we are in the one of the biggest moments that we've ever seen in Origin. And he backed himself. And he made the call. And can you tell me he got it wrong? Do you reckon he >> Well, Andrew John's right most passionate. So this one, see, so this one had split. I saw Mark Guy. So I watched all the commentary over Mark Guy tough. He's the one got probably sin bin said no. I'm thinking I'm not sure.
Andrew John said no. So when it's and I disagreed initial thought normally when it's a send off I would like to get to that it's at least 90 or 100% that guy's >> I think that's sent off in majority of games at the moment in our competition.
No cuz I think that we miss some of those. We do miss head clashes and they say accidental head >> clash.
The problem was it wasn't just a head clash but that was just a head clash.
Show their back. You show the back.
>> The issue is the shoulder contact of the head. That's what's hurt.
>> Show the back angle. I mean, this one here, Gordy.
>> It's the shoulder contact.
>> Look how close to touch he is as well.
So, you don't know what he's actually said to Ashley Klein as well. He's right there. He gets a clearcut view of that.
And as Braith has gone on about, that is a clear shoulder to the head. And I think it's a send off any day of the week.
>> It's easy, right? You're the Queensland captain, right? So, you you and most Queenslanders agree with you, Gordy. And then the New South Wales.
>> Yeah. But like even when Ree got my like it it does ruin it a bit. You know what I mean? So if Sue Lit gets 10 minutes I'm probably Yeah. You know what I mean?
I'm like >> to ruin the product that's not the referee's call.
>> Okay. Karen Ponger doesn't get suspended.
>> Yeah. But the health of Ter is more important the rugby league.
Gordy protecting football in the age of concussion is more important than the referee almost the game itself game like this. And the guy that made a tackle is the one that had probably the most head noise that had to go over and see the specialists over in Canada. So I get all that. I love I love your back flip. It's the best. That's the biggest back flip ever.
>> You're going against Gordy now. Last night limited footage last night.
>> Wow. Larry Daly admits the Blues need to get better despite winning game one.
>> Yeah, we got a lot of areas of improvement. But having said that, Queensland played really well. It's funny cuz I didn't see that one coming at all. They were really dialed in. So I I don't know. I I I don't know why or how we we played like that. But and one thing I do know is we can't do that again cuz we won't get away with it.
>> We saw you half shed a tear last night.
>> Oh, it meant a lot because I was just before the game I was really comfortable the space we're in and then to see the first 40 minutes you're sitting there going how how does that translate?
Trying to work out how how did that happen? So you know if we had lost Yeah.
I would have been disappointed but the fight was there. Yeah. I'm real confident that with our best performance, we haven't been anywhere near our best.
>> It was not their best by any means. I don't know why or how we played like that. So, there's still a lot of questions that remain inside the camp of the Blues. It was a horrendous start.
Let's let's just be honest, right? Uh there's a lot of improvement needed.
>> It's still a win, right? A win's a win and we're very happy with the with getting the result and it definitely helps them in this series because they're on the ropes. What do we think?
What did we think of the Blues performance?
>> I thought it was average. A game break.
The issue was Lori saying, I don't know what the problem was. Their last three games, their starts, their opening 40 minutes have been diabolical. Three three games in a row, right? They got away with that one last night. They were very lucky to get away with that game.
If they don't fix it, they get pounded in Melbourne. They get flogged in Brisbane. So, he hasn't got long to fix it. He's got three. If you if they keep missing the start break, >> yeah, >> they don't want they don't pull him back. If Queens have got 13 men tries out there so there was so there was two taken off them Ethan Strange one Murray's one that passed down they were taken off them because they were illegal >> but I get it tries I know but no I think it was and even listening to to to Cooper and Matty there yeah the start of the game just wasn't good enough like yes like to hasn't made three errors in three years he made him in the first 15 minutes so you can forgive it's going to happen Kryton was norm he's normally safe but it wasn't It wasn't even that.
It wasn't so much the errors. It was the response to the errors. It was the lack of speed of the line and intent in the tackle and the lack of support push up and it was slow. They looked flat. They didn't look like they were a threat at all. And it was just like you're watching that game >> and you're thinking what's going on here? This is this is a mess. And you know that's that's the let's be real, right? Uh Lori, you just say that they Kin doesn't get sent and they continue on the way they did. What happens?
>> Well, my story is written at half time.
Forget about ch changing the players.
You need to change the coach, right? And that's radical midway through a series.
But I think their performances under Lori in the last couple of years have been bang average. And that first half was one of the worst first halves they've produced. And they've had some pretty poor first halves under him. So I mean I think for Lor's future and Lor's legacy mate that second half has saved him basically. It's given him a chance to save himself >> because for me you know if they continue that first half and the second half I know it's crazy to say you got to think about changing the coach >> or after one game.
>> Yes. It's not No, it's not after one game though. That's that's what I'm saying. It's not after one game.
>> If they just so they got hammered in that game, right? and K doesn't get sent. You You think they could have got rid of him after one?
>> I think it's a discussion point. Yeah, I think it's definitely worth discussing.
>> Jeez, you're back foot there.
>> Well, have you seen them like in the last game?
>> No, that that that was so inep.
>> So, Queensland weren't good. Is that what you're trying to say? Great. You mean like they jump?
>> No, but it goes back to brace point where you're dropping the ball that happens. Okay. But it's how you respond.
The lack of energy in that opening 40 minutes, the lack of intent was not something that should be happening in your game one of an origin series. And the concerning thing is when Lori says post game, look, I don't know how we missed the start. We go back to Rey's point, it's been a habit now and that's a concern for for New South Wales.
>> Well, and you know, one thing I I said for the whole week was I would start with Cam Murray and I I know Maddie and Cooper said Lori is the bench great because they brought Cam Murray on. I'm I'm starting with him, you know. Get Yo, put him in the front row with Payne Har, whatever. I don't care. Even bring him off the bench. Ken Murray is fit. He's got great footwork. He's a support player. He pushes up on every play. He's competitive. He's passionate about the jersey. He brings energy like what we we said. I said it all week and then we start like that and I'm thinking >> I I just I just assumed he would make changes before kickoff. Like I was frustrated. And then you get that start and you go what what are we doing here?
You know, but I know it sounds a bit negative because we won. But it is it is a concern. It's a concern for mine.
>> But Braith, if you're not negative and you don't really dissect that opening 40 minutes, New South Wales are going to go to Melbourne and struggle, right? So there needs to be change. There needs to be some sort of formulation of a plan and you touched on on Cam Mar because the the middles were gassed, right? And you got someone like him who can pump out 80 minutes and play at that high level would have been advantageous compared to you know Adam Fen Blake and Mitch Barnett were struggling on back of the defensive workload >> and he played better when Mari was on there clearly.
>> Yeah. You know, the halves, both halves played better when he was out there because >> he's such a great player, isn't he?
>> Get him early ball.
>> Victor and Victor as well. Victor was a good leave him on the bench, Victor. Like you need impact and you need those quick fit players with footwork and you know, so no changing that. What about Queensland, Gordy? Uh they they were really good.
Yeah, look, uh, defensively like we were great and I I actually >> like I was watching the clock and I'm thinking we can maybe hold on and win this and there was a couple plays obviously the 4020 right with Tabio Fedau I thought he got caught out of position there and in the air he's normally so good like he's like m against the Titans I think he scored two at so >> Tedesco I don't I don't remember him out jumping a tall fullback like so there was a couple of plays that we'd like to have again but my first initial reaction was I was really proud but I was disappointed because we still had a chance to win that game.
>> They got so close but they nearly won the game. It was a miracle that they didn't in the end.
>> I felt like early in that second half they had the foot in the throat and they could have knocked they could have killed them off and they just didn't there was a great tackle I think it was by Brian Ty um I think it was on Rob Toy that stopped the try right they score then the game's over. there was just that they had that 20-minute patch or 50-minute patch at the start of the second half where they just could have killed them off and they didn't get it done and that came back >> and we weren't good enough to get that done either, but you know um I think both states will be better and like I know that you guys are a little bit hard on your state at the moment but I thought that they did leave a bit out there like once they got the ball and it's possession and we're watching at club level each week. Um, we did have a long, >> but even last year when we won the first game, I remember it. We came and sat here and we're like, we won, but we weren't that good. And then we got our pants pulled down in games two and three, you know, like I I I remember that vividly. Yeah, we got it done. I think it was 186 and we had Clear Moses in that first game and it was a good performance, >> but it wasn't great, you know. It still wasn't what we what we expected and then here we are. Yep. Take the win. Stoked.
Couldn't be happier that we got it. But there there's a lot of work to be done.
There really is.
>> Mickey thought Slater got it wrong or made an error with the bench.
>> Well, when um Ken Fong was sent from the field, you look at the they had um three players available on the bench still. So they'd only use three replacement players. They had Shibasaki, Trentro, and Ezra Man. And you saw a couple of times where New South Wales attacked really, really well. They went on that right hand side. And poor Kurt Cable off the back of playing, you know, 70 minutes of origin was posted up against Katoni Stags. And then with about 13 or so minutes to go, they use that final bench replacement on Trent Leero. They should have put Shibasaki on. That's what he was there for. He's a defensive center. We know he's not an attacking center. He's a really good defensive center. And I thought Queensland made a massive error by not putting him there to try and mitigate some of the damage that was happening on their left edge.
>> What do you think, Gordy?
>> Hindsight, that's like that's a really good point. But in the middle we were getting beaten up as well. Like there are some guys gassed in the middle. So that's I reckon they sit there with all the brains trust and go Kate Wells a like he's a pro. He sort of holding the spot >> and the boys were gassed in the middle.
So but >> now in hindsight throwing a fresh center on against Katon stage.
>> Nathan Clearary recap the dying stages of the game after the Blues won the series opener last night.
>> It was uh pretty crazy. It was defined rugby league. I think just the roller coaster of it and the highs and lows.
That's why we love the game and happy to be on the right side of the result.
>> Tell me that final conversion. Have you ever been more nervous?
>> I missed that one. I think I retire. But it was more so just dragging it out trying to wind down the clock and it took forever.
>> What can you say about Ethan Strange?
>> Oh, it's absolutely incredible that story. Like, yeah, he pretty much found out 36 hours before the game. For him to have a performance like that, it's no surprise to me cuz he's just such an unbelievable player and filled with confidence. It was yeah it was an outstanding performance and um yeah it was a pleasure to play alongside him.
>> Nathan Clearary our solo performer of origin. Thanks to solo by my is the monkey off the back for Nathan Clearary before I come to you. I thought he was exceptional when it mattered the most and and he iced it. Uh he got better as the game went on and the pressure was on and they needed him and he he was clutch and I thought he was >> You should only ask the only origin half sitting.
>> Thought he was fantastic. I I really did. You know, >> it was great. Yeah, it was great. I agree with you. Well, the monkeyy's not off the bat because you got to win the series. You got to dominate a series, not just one game. Well, not just 20 minutes, which is what he effectively did, right? He dominated 15, 10, 15 minutes.
>> Well, did he not? I mean, >> he played good.
>> He played good, but he only really dominated the last 15 minutes.
No, I would have given it to Ethan Strange, but I thought he dominate. He obviously dominated the last 15 minutes or so, but you got to dominate this.
This is about not about dominating one-off games. It's about dominating a series. That's what we're talking about.
That's the monkey that's on the back.
>> Not playing good in one game, playing great in one game, which he did.
>> Can't a team just get on his shoulders, though? And can't he just guide a team to victory? His composure, his ability to to read the situation, and we saw it in the 23 grand final against the Broncos. And this probably wasn't as good as that, but that was a remarkable origin period for for Nathan Clearary.
>> Yeah. Well, at the end of the day, if he doesn't kick the 4020, >> and if he doesn't come up big, >> you know, they don't win.
>> They don't win the game. That's why he's the man of the match for mine, right?
Cuz without his performance, they don't win the Ethan Strange was probably the best player over the course of 80 minutes for New South Wales. But they don't win the game without Nathan Clear.
>> Let's get to Ethan Strange on debut. 21 years of age, and we we said it the night before the game. Is he ready for Origin? Will he deliver? And boy did he.
He He was, you know, like we we said it, Gordy, all week, he it's it we we we expected it to suit. We we also said we won't know until he goes onto the field and he won't know himself. Well, we all know now.
>> I I know. I I hated playing against the big running 5'8 cuz they're the ones that test you the most. Like cuz when you're tired, the last thing you want them to do is run the ball. And in the dying stages, he had a lot of carries.
And I thought he was absolutely fantastic. And Ricky summed it up the best, mate. if he gave him two months or two minutes notice, he'll be ready to play. And he was.
>> Yeah. Outstanding. And tried to set the tone when when you look at how bad New South Wales were in the first half. He tried. He makes that tackle on Cam Monster, I think it is. And if Queensland score there, that's almost the game, right? Like in terms of the momentum that they had and and that was a huge moment for New South Wales. And >> you know what I love about that footage?
What about the lack of reaction from his teammates? One bike patted him on the back. The rest just stood there. That that moment sum summed up the first half for New South Wales, I reckon, because he came up with a huge play there and there was no response from his teammates.
>> Gez, you're hating New South.
>> I'm just saying, brace, we talked about how poor they were in the first half and the lack of passion. That moment summed up.
>> There was a complete lack of energy in that opening point.
>> I want to have a look at the try he scored because this sums it up for me.
Now watch this. He throws the short ball to Kryton, gets tackled, reacts, doesn't stop, doesn't hit the ground, pushes up, shows speeds, knows where to position himself, gets back on the inside, jumps over Walker, scores the try. Most players who throw the pass to Crot and get contact like this, they either hit the deck or they give up on the play.
This is origin. Watch this. Gets hit nearly taken the holds his feet and then he's the only support player to push up and then get that trier did a magnificent job himself. But that that's the type of play, isn't it? That's a play. Like look at him there. He's nearly gone.
>> That's an origin play, right? Talk about origin.
>> There's no other Blues jersey in the frame.
>> That's He was People said he was made for Origin. I think we saw it the other night, right? Last night. He looked like a bloke was made for that stage.
>> Yeah. Okay. What happens now though?
>> I drop him.
>> What?
>> I put him back on the bench.
>> You know, it's funny because you know the two Queenslanders here, they're going with Moses, I think. Are you both going with Moses?
>> I would be.
>> It all depends. If Moses plays, he's a he's a wonderful player.
>> Of course he is.
>> But he's in the but he's in the >> He's 14 now, mate. I'd still have >> But you haven't He's not 18. He's >> Mitchell Moses would start at six for me. I think they missed his kicking game the other night.
>> It's the it's the kicking game where if you're looking to to go for Mitch and Mitch is an interesting situation, right? He's got that minor hamstring twinge at the moment. Speaking to Paramea officials, it's 50/50 if he plays next week against the Bulldogs, right? So if he doesn't play against the Bulldogs, he's gone two week or three weeks without playing a game before Origin because the Origin sides are picked after that game. So >> it's a what I would say about the kicking game, I think that we kind of overlook like Sam Walker was probably on debut the best kicking game I've ever seen, but it was it was great. with with New South Wales and I've been in this position when your outside backs are making errors, your forwards aren't making meters and you've only got Nathan Clearary who who can kick for you and it's a lot harder, right? I expect them to be a hell of a lot better if they stuck with Strange if they do stick with him. The outside backs will be a lot they won't be making errors they are.
They'll be getting quicker play of the balls. The forwards will be on the advantage line. They can't possibly start like that again. Why not? Why not?
No, I don't think they've done it for three games in a row.
>> I don't think they will. But but what I'm saying is, you know, it it isolates their kicking game. You are the Grinch.
You're filthy. You got to take the dummy out. You spat the dummy, haven't you?
>> I'm just saying, bro. Why can't happen again?
>> I love it. How you said, I was beat you on the bell.
>> History from you. And the way you carried on just made my night last night. It was great.
>> Moses kicking game would help get him out of trouble the other night.
>> I don't think anyone's kicking. As Bra saying, when you're when you're on the back foot, particularly in those conditions, >> look at Nathan's kicking game in the second half.
>> Why?
>> It was better. Yeah.
>> Why?
>> Well, cuz they played better and held the ball.
>> Yeah, that's my point. So, I listen, he's Moses is a better kicker. I get it.
But I I I'm just like I'm I'm find it very hard to leave him out the way he played last night.
>> Was pretty adamant that Mitch Moses would be back in the squad in some way.
And what it does do, if Ethan is on the bench, I think it changes the mindset of New South Wales because he would have been used as a just in case on Wednesday night if Mitch Moses started in the six.
If he's on the bench, he gets game time now. Yeah.
>> Right. So that changes their thinking a little bit as well.
>> Yep. All right. What about Sam Walker, guys? Uh I spoke to Gordy before. Gordy, >> you can't get You can't get much better.
>> So good. He was so good. We thought >> you want to rest him for the rest of the year.
>> Well, well, Tommy's back. If Tommy Degan's back, he probably goes back to the bench. But he was outstanding, right? I mean, >> I thought he was great. Sam and you know, we talked about Sammy >> um being a guy who loves the big stage and he's a bit of a gambler and he you know, he took his shots and they came off the other night.
>> Um he's in for a long Well, maybe he's not cuz when Tom Bearden come back comes back, he probably goes back to the bench, right? But he's an origin player.
We saw that >> bench.
>> Yeah, why not?
>> Walker on the bench.
>> Why not?
>> If Deon comes in, >> why not? Don't like it.
>> I don't know. He's a half back.
>> Tommy can move around though a little bit. Play a bit of hooker, bit of six.
>> He should be a coach. Really? I like your bit hand.
>> No, I wouldn't be having Sam Walker on the bench. But >> yeah, it's interesting.
>> We can do that now with a six-man bench.
Carl slide in a hooker.
>> I I understand how you can use the bench, but I'd be having Ezra man.
>> You'd rather have Ezra man than Sam Walker on the bench >> for off the bench. Yes.
>> Definitely.
>> Yes, I would.
>> When are you playing Sam Walker at nine?
>> You got a blood.
>> Why can't somebody walk and play nine?
How many how many players win or run at him like defensively?
>> They ran him the other night.
>> It's a very different.
>> It's a bit different. Repeated efforts in the middle boy, mate. He's an imp boy.
>> Yeah. We're going to listen to New South Walsh and tell us how to pick out.
>> No, you put him in nine then put him in off the bench. He's got to come on, play 10, 15 minutes, give Harry a rest if need be.
>> They got Max. They don't need to do that. So, >> all right. Pay Har is set to come back this week. Um, >> he walks straight back in.
>> Yeah, of course.
>> There's no >> Who misses out then? Sid or something like that. Like that's up to the New South Wales guys >> for Blake misses out.
>> I would think so after his performance the other night.
>> Didn't rate it.
>> Thought he was off the pace.
>> Yeah, I thought he was gassed. I thought >> you've showing every You've run out of buses tonight.
>> I thought he was off. I thought he was off the pace.
>> Nice press conference. You get >> I won't be going just a last train.
>> Did they meet you in the dresser room?
>> They did the other night.
>> Back to I'm with Rey though. Look at this. This is a big moment for mine, right? When you look at the defensive effort of Adam Fenol Blake in this moment, he's a three-man tackle. He's the first man up, right? So, what should happen here? He's got to retreat back to that defensive line, right? That's a shortcut and you can't be doing that at Origin. Gets that defensive line. Mitch Barnett's got to work harder on the inside because of that play.
>> Spot on. And they took him straight off after that. So, you know, they probably he looked gass so they could have taken him off before it got to that point, but at the same time, it's origin. You don't stop and you get to your position and he didn't do it there. And I do question Fenor Blake. I don't think he's proven himself. And >> so you're with me now.
>> Yeah. I didn't say I wasn't. Uh I actually think he could he could be the one that misses out. I'm not Well, who else? It's either him, Barnett.
Hasn't been great this year, right? He hasn't had the it's been okay. He hasn't been bad, right? But he hasn't hadint.
His second stint was much better than the first stint. But it was when New South Wales really needed was in that opening stint. And even Mitch Bar, Mitch Barnett's a very very good player, but you could tell how gassed he was early.
He hasn't played a lot of footy. Um, but his efforts were still there. I just didn't like this moment here from Fen Blake.
>> I think you give the Fil Blake and Jacob Sophia the next two weeks. Whoever plays better is in the team. Whoever doesn't, see you later.
>> All right. Will L be fit and available to play before selections for game two?
>> Well, the early suggestions are that he won't be fit for next week. He's got that back injury. Um, it's not progressing as well as South Sydney would have liked. So early indications obviously still have to buy this week.
There's still a bit of of time to go but as it stands right now I think he's unlikely to play for new South City next week.
>> That's huge. And if he doesn't play I'll have to ask you two before we get to a break. What happens in the centers?
Mlean get a start or they're sticking with uh Stags and >> I think they'll stick with what they got.
>> Yeah.
>> You can slide Ethan Strange out there potentially, couldn't you? If you want to bring Moses back on the team and stick on the bench.
>> You're making some absolute >> I'm mixing it up for you both tonight.
>> What are you doing? I'm just playing with things.
>> He's played under 19 New South Wales in center. Now you've >> Yeah, he's played center. He's played center in first grade.
>> What's the problem?
>> He's good footballer.
>> I'm not even going to argue.
>> I don't have the energy to respond.
>> I don't have the energy.
>> Here we go. He's about to smash someone else.
>> I think Casey Mlan defensively >> has got he's got some issues.
>> He was terrible last night. All right.
Stick around Journos. And this Saturday, Australia take on Pakistan in the first of three ODIs. You can catch all the action live on Fox Cricket.
Welcome back. This Sunday, first place Panthers take on the second place Warriors live only on Fox League. How good is this one going to be, Gordy?
>> It's going to be massive. What pens do Penri back their >> Have we heard any Have we got mail?
Actually, this is one for the the viewers or listeners.
>> Yeah. Come on, Rey.
>> Come on, Rey.
>> What have you done today other than?
>> You would think they they may they >> I would think so. It's Sunday night.
They've had a few days.
>> Read about it.
>> Either way though, this is going to be a crack game.
>> Oh, huge game. Huge game. Warriors are flying at the moment deserve to be second. The interesting situation around their halves going to Martin again with Luke Metaf in New South Wales Cup.
>> Rey Connor Watson bit.
>> He's made a decision both. He's going to the PNG Chiefs in 2028. He's signing number three, Connor Watson. So, good signing for the Chiefs. Chammy's on fire.
>> On fire. What's he doing next year?
>> He's still working through that, Breath, but he'll be somewhere next year.
>> How long do you know? Do you know what the deal was with the Chiefs?
>> A two-year deal with the Chiefs. Yeah, two-ear deal. So, 2829.
>> So, who they got now? Jerome.
>> Jerome.
>> Connor.
>> Connor. Alex Johnson.
>> Alex Johnson. That's a pretty good start. That's him. Two years away.
>> They're doing good.
>> All right. Thank you, Rudy.
>> Pleasure to be here. Next Tuesday following NL 360, it's part two of Face to Face with Paul Fatty Vaughn.
>> What a play from Casey Mlane over the top of his captain or over the top OF TRIDENT IN THE CLEAR. STRAIGHT THERE, HURDLES one and scores by the Blues. He gets his back AND THIS TIME THEY WON'T BE TAKING THIS ONE OF THEM. The Blues are alive at a core.
>> They had to be perfect there and what Brighton did. Hit, spin, turn. Ethan Strange hurdling the Queenslanders on the ground. What a moment for him and what a moment for New South Wales.
>> Welcome back. That was our fast play of the round. thanks to Aussie Broadband.
Uh game one and done there in Origin.
Gordy obviously not the result that that you wanted and Queensland, but you're pretty confident they can.
>> Yeah, I saw enough over the 80 minutes that we'll be right for game two. We just >> adjust our attitudes and get ready for it.
>> Can't wait for it already.
>> That's it for 360 for this week. We'll see you next Monday at 6:30 p.m.
