The TJ Evans Trail is a 14-mile paved bike trail running from Johnson'sville to Newark, Ohio, featuring scenic views, wildlife encounters (including a bald eagle nest), and historical sites like the Ohio & Erie Canal locks; the adjacent TJ Evans Panhandle Trail extends another 10 miles east from Newark along railroad tracks, though it requires more maintenance and offers fewer scenic features.

The TJ Evans Trail (A bike adventure)Added:
you know, from here this seems quite busy.
I mean, in comparison to most trails that I ride. Yeah.
>> Hello again. I am Bane.
And we're on an adventure.
>> I thought you put it like in my face.
>> Oh, I kind of did.
>> Look at that. I don't know what I'm doing, folks.
>> You put more effort into it.
>> I got to put more effort into it.
I am uh out biking around Eastern Ohio this weekend and I got company today. Jason has uh come and caught up with me and we're out moving off now. Currently >> in a quarter mile >> we're on the TJ Evansville trail.
The TJ Evans trail runs 14 miles from Johnson'sville, Ohio to Newark, Ohio.
Once once we get to Newark, Ohio, we're going to bike through town and we're going to go find the TJ Evans panhandle trail and that rolls another 10 miles east from Newark.
That's what we're doing currently.
I'm actually pretty excited for this.
the uh we're going to ride through two or three towns.
Don't ask which ones because I don't remember.
I don't know. I don't put enough effort into this.
Inside joke, folks. Got to pay attention to find out about these jokes.
Not 100% sure what we're getting into.
We have parked on either end.
So, logistically, we parked my car on the west side or the east side. We parked on the east side and then we drove Jason's car to the >> continue on to Thomas Evans Trail.
>> Now, we're biking back.
I don't know how to pull the bell up from this screen, but it's got a bell.
>> It take you a little bit to get used to it, but it's not too complicated.
>> Very feature heavy.
>> Apparently, this particular model has all the features of the big expensive model, but it's smaller.
It's the same thing, just one size smaller.
>> Yeah.
And apparently it doesn't have the same battery life because of how bright the screen is. But >> yeah, >> we'll see.
>> Hello.
>> What' that guy say?
>> I have no idea. Something about middle of the road.
>> I don't know if he was talking to his kid or telling us something's in the middle of the road.
>> Find out.
>> Eastern Ohio, folks.
Yeah, that wind is definitely coming from the front.
>> It's 10 miles that way.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, this is a pretty area.
>> Kind of reminds you of Junior.
>> Yep.
>> Or as you say, X.
>> Good figure, folks. This part of Ohio reminds you of another part of Ohio.
It's actually really pretty.
>> I bet it's awesome in the fall time.
>> Yeah, in the fall and the summer, this is going to look completely different.
>> Lots of tree coverage here.
Anyways, on we go. We'll see what we find. I think it said Alexandria 6 miles.
I think that was the name. And probably get us some snacks there. I believe there's a depot with some snacks in it.
>> Ohio, folks.
>> Ohio like it goes over the road maybe.
>> Yeah, it does.
>> Or maybe a river crossing.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, it's a road.
Squirrel. Baby squirrel.
>> What are you laughing at?
>> Your hub.
>> I know. I'm trying. If you're filming, I'm trying to keep telling cuz you can hear it in your videos.
>> Man, I don't mind too much. Somebody might, but >> if they're complaining about squeaky bikes, they probably don't appreciate my hug.
>> We already know Joe doesn't like my hug.
>> He doesn't like your rooster or chicken or whatever that thing is.
It's a woodpecker.
>> Woodpecker.
>> The rag bri woodpecker. What you call my little >> the uh it's we have elevation drop going uh west to east so far. Pretty nice.
Yeah, we're dropping 3% right now.
>> This is a 3% drop. Yeah, 2%. Now you have a fancy computer, it'll tell you.
This will tell me eventually once I figure it out. I don't know if you online, you just swipe left and right to see different screens.
>> Before getting started today, for y'all not paying attention, we went and biked the Blackhand Gorge Trail, which is in the area, and it's a little shorty. is only 4 and a half miles or so, but it's a beautiful trail with a lot of history to it.
And I ain't going to tell you what, but we got into some adventure on the trail. If you haven't seen it, you just have to go watch.
It was actually quite a bit of fun. You can just look at my bike.
I'm going to die. Here's a uh a hint about what we got into right here.
If you know, you know, they say.
We also saw a bald eagle and I almost got trampled by some deer all on the Black Hand Gorge Trail, which should be released before this one, so you can go watch it, too.
Quality content, folks. Quality content.
Break from the tree line.
Ohio farmlands out here.
Quite pretty.
And so far it's quite enjoyable.
Wind is hitting us on the right side.
So, not a headwind and not a tailwind until we turn left.
Alternate bike route US50 and Jason turning on his radar. Folks, here's a better look at his bike to get an idea about what may or may not have happened on the other trail.
Looks like we got a road close sign up here. And it's Sunday, right?
>> Yeah.
>> Someone's up here working or thefting.
Looks like shoveling.
Wow, there's not an access point.
>> Wait, that might be a little bridge.
>> Yeah, you can do that.
>> Turn around or enter the roadway?
I suppose we will.
It looks like they are >> bridge.
>> Building a bridge.
Hold. Please.
>> Did you just see somebody stealing gravel?
Construction people here?
>> Yeah, we just saw a guy stealing gravel.
Oh, this guy is trying to strike. I'm nowhere near him.
Little baby.
Little critter.
Hey, a little garden snake.
>> So, it's Sunday and there's nobody out here working on Sundays. And I thought that when we was riding up, we just saw a guy shoveling gravel as fast as he could and then he took off.
Uh I don't know if we got anything to show who he was, but he was definitely out here stealing gravel.
Jason carried his bike over the construction area to the trail. And now I'm getting this cool shot of the trail.
There's another access point right up here.
We're about 7 and a half miles in on the TJ Evans Trail.
I guess y'all saw it, but we just passed a constru a construction area where they're rebuilding a bridge across the trail and we ran into some dude stealing stealing gravel just shoveling as fast as he could and then he split as we came closer.
Kind of curious if I got any of uh if I got footage of this vehicle.
And if I care enough to report it. What do y'all think? Report the theft.
Comment below.
>> You know, if we have just stayed there, shoveling slower, we would have never thought anything of it.
>> Probably not.
I'm gonna get caught out.
So, this is Clemens Station or the site of Clement Station, and there's a little information sign here about it, but it's really hard to read it. And it doesn't say anything about this particular piece here. We're trying to figure out what it is. I'm thinking maybe it was the base for the water tower, but to be honest, it's massive and I'm not sure that's what it was for.
It doesn't look like anything in the picture.
Well, if y'all have an idea about what this would have been, comment and let me know.
That sign says it doubled as a hotel at one point.
Coming up on Granville.
>> Granville.
>> We are past >> continue straight.
>> We are past that other town.
>> Yeah, we're rolling up on Granville, which I believe is in the next mile.
And I think there's like a coffee eery place in the depot.
We're going to check that out.
I had a couple of snacks a few minutes ago. I was feeling quite uh quite light on the uh calorie energy.
We just went by a bald eagle's nest which was super cool.
There was a fell out photography like taking pictures and had he not been there, I would have went right past it, the nest itself.
But there was actually a bald eagle nest sign. So that is a old eagle's nest still in use.
So, we're rolling into Granville and then after that maybe four miles or so to the end of Newark and then we're going to bike through Newark to the TJ Evans panhandle trail.
Hello.
>> Now I'm eyeballing up in the air looking for nest.
>> If there's an eagle's nest and you're paying attention, you're going to see it because they're massive.
Couple road crossings.
Nothing terrible so far.
Anyways, on we go.
>> All right. Here's the station, I think.
>> All right.
this station. This is a depot and you can get some grub in here. Buy some coffee or something. Let's check it out.
>> Bike shop over there. You see that?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Looks like a hat in a little place.
Not uh >> not what I expected. I thought there would be more donuts.
All right, I'm going to get some kind of snack in here >> and shut this down.
>> So, I'm not holding a camera in everybody's face.
>> All right, what are we eating?
>> Well, I ate a turkey wrap.
>> Yeah, >> I got the same thing and some kind of cookie.
Pit stop at the bike shop.
local bike shop. This is One Love Cafe and Bike Shop in Granville, Ohio.
Supporting the bike shop. Bought me some glasses.
Support your local bike shop.
Stopped in Granville for some snacks.
I might check that out later.
Granville. That is look like a couple spots to check out.
On my weekend bike trip, Jason found a car wash, sprayed his bike off, and I supported the local bike shop and bought me some glasses.
some goodter glasses.
We're about 12 miles in almost starting to roll into Newark where the TJ Evans trail runs out and we run into well the road going through town.
It looks like there's a few other paths in this area.
Seeing some bridges.
The Craig Washed Way.
Yeah, there's a bridge over there going to the ball fields or something about to roll underneath the highway.
And this is actually huge. This is wide for a uh bike trail tunnel.
Thomas Evans fell.
Yeah, this is real wide.
Columbia Bridgeworks, Daytona, Ohio.
Dayton, Ohio.
Certainly looks old.
I wouldn't have pictured a train coming across it, but that's possible.
Hello.
Rolling around Newark somewhere at this point.
Trying to get from the TJ Evans trail to the TJ Evans panhandle trail.
Rolling right along.
We're a little over halfway at this point.
Once we get through Newark onto the panhandle trail, it's only about 10 miles.
On we go.
Like and subscribe.
Follow along. Oh, damn.
>> Stopping.
Moving too fast. Can't stop. Not enough effort.
That's too much effort.
Officially on the road with traffic heading through Newark.
Man, these red lights really slow my my motion here.
I tell you folks, it's hard to shift when you're holding a camera.
Hard to shift when you're holding a camera.
Fall in love with your hair and nails.
That's triggering.
All right, folks. I'm uh be back with you shortly.
>> At roundabout, take exit onto right. We're going to go straight through the roundabout.
He ain't going to go. He had plenty of time.
>> Turn slide right onto West Church Street.
Wow.
>> Super cool.
>> Turn right.
>> We got to go down that street.
We do.
>> What is it? Are you >> It looks cool though.
>> Turn right.
>> All right. Roll this.
Old YMCA building, shopping, living, dining, arcade, capital building over here on the left.
And I'm going to assume this is Main Street or the historical area.
>> Are you trying to go over there?
>> Yeah, we're going up left up this other street here.
Maybe maybe down this street and back.
Okay, I'm going to toss the drone out in front of this courthouse in a second.
Probably an old bank.
First national bank. Look at that.
pretty cool. Central Canal Market.
>> Oh, they about hit that car.
Well, folks, that's what everybody's complaining about. Whole gangs of hoodlums doing wheelies.
And I don't think I caught it, but this kid looked like he was running into the back of that car.
Well, folks, almost got assaulted by children on electric dirt bikes.
This is an historic jail. I think you like to get This is prison right here.
This is a dungeon.
Now that's a nice mural. That is the electric train that went from here in Newark to Zanesville.
I've been looking for this map and I'm sure I can find it online. This shows the whole canal, the Ohio Eerie Canal from Cleveland all the way down Newark where we're at all the way down to Portsouth which is closer to my area. Portsouth is in Sciota County. I live in Lawrence.
Portsouth is where the Ohio area canal went into the Ohio River.
That's super cool.
This is uh not a replica. I pretty sure >> it's not. It told you up there about it.
>> This is the original. They just filled it in.
>> So, this is uh one of the locks. Does it say what number it is?
>> It does. I don't remember. So, this is one of the locks. They've currently filled it in. Probably cuz it's in town and they don't want people getting hurt.
They got this bureau over here. That's actually super cool.
>> Number nine.
>> This is lock number nine.
That doesn't seem right.
Labeled as lock number nine.
This still has the swivels and everything on it. So, you had someone that ran the boat house and as the bo boats came through, they had to come out and open and close these gates. Super super cool. He seemed shocked that I thought it'd be funny if he ran into that car.
The firehouse I need to shift, folks.
We are now rolling through Newark.
Really out of Newark on the other end.
Looking for the panhandle trail, folks. There's a lot of stuff to see.
We almost bike right past that canal lock.
Where we going here? Is this it?
>> Is this the panhandle trail?
No signage. Maybe there's a sign up here somewhere.
>> All right.
>> Well, folks, we're on the other side of Newark. We are now on back on the bike trail. The phone says this is the TJ Evans panhandle trail.
Uh immediately this is not the good part of town.
or not as nice.
Folks don't seem to appreciate what they got. Anyways, you got to slow down and pay attention.
We almost went right past the canal and didn't see it. That would have been tragic. All right, this is the don't come here at night section of the trail.
>> Lots of trash.
Lots of trash.
In fact, this is an ungodly amount of trash. Broken beer bottles.
Trash everywhere.
Folks, I've been in some sketchy areas, but I think the closest I've been to being beat up has been by bunch of little rich bunch of little rich kids on electric dirt bikes.
>> Yeah, this is the bad part of town. And it'll be like this until we get away for town.
>> The mouth on that kid bother you.
>> I think I let stuff bother me too much.
>> Yeah.
>> I don't like the the intention behind it.
>> Honestly, I think his intentions were to be like, "Let's go be cool with those guys so they don't try to turn me in."
>> That's what he was trying to do.
>> He was basically like, "Hey, I'm not >> They're already harassing us. Don't Don't tell them. Don't show them that."
>> All right. I got I got you.
>> Maybe. So, >> he talking about >> All right. So, I believe the TJ Evans Panhandle Trail basically rolls along this railroad all the way to the other end and along this road.
>> And currently, it's quite cracked up. These aren't roots. These are just cracks in the pavement and they're quite old. At some point in time, they filled them in and they've spread apart.
I'm gonna put the camera down for now and we're going to roll on.
On we go.
We have a bit of a tailwind and we're slightly going down.
This is a uh an odd placement for this covered bridge.
I guess it's a bench.
Yeah, it's a little rest area. It is a bridge.
It's a legit covered bridge.
Wood surface.
We got about seven miles left.
>> Yep.
I'm pretty sure this entire section of trail rolls along the train tracks and some swamp lands.
I don't know.
That might be part of the canal. Hard to say.
That must be a bridge foundation.
Hey, the track cuts off here before they tore this tie of the tracks off. That's cool.
It's a switch, folks.
A railroad switch.
So, we got a rail line here on the left now off of the main line.
And it would have been going over here to some warehouse or another.
I hate to say I don't know what it was, but I don't. It's now a brickyard. Maybe it was a brickyard then, too.
So, there would have been two lines running through here because this bike path is on one of the lines.
On the other end of the bike path, you can see where the line kept going.
And over here to the left, there would have been a line where they loaded the trains up.
Anyways, that's about it for this trip.
Joe, if you're listening, here's a little bit of hub music for you. Let it sing.
We found a car wash and sprayed her off just for you, Joe.
That's all she wrote for this trip, folks.
We went end to end the TJ Evans and TJ Evans panhandle trail.
So, we just rolled through the TJ Evans Trail from Johnson'sville to uh Newark and then from Newark to where we're at, I don't know where it's at, is the TJ Evans panhandle trail.
Now, personally, I enjoyed the TJ Evans trail quite a bit. The TJ Evans panhandle trail I could do without.
Uh, the TJ Evans Trail is 14 miles and the panhandle is 10 miles. They are not connected. You got to ride through Newark, but it wasn't bad riding through.
It was still a fun trip.
The panhandle section did go pretty fast, mainly because there was nothing to see.
The entire trail runs along the railroad track. So, you got railroad track and fence. You do have the longer burger basket uh company, which is closed, but the little building, which looks like a giant basket, is kind of neat.
Outside of that, was there anything on the panhandle trail?
>> No, just a fence and a river.
>> Cracks.
>> Cracks.
>> Fence, railroad, and cracks. The trail is in need of repair. You It's a slight decline, so you're moving pretty good.
But I like the uh I like the TJ Evans Trail quite a bit.
It was fun. And there's stuff probably in Granville that we went through that you could check out that we didn't really check out and Newark also.
That's my uh I don't know. That's my uh thoughts on the trail. I like the TJ Evans trail, not so much the pan trail. We could have done without the panel trail. What do you think, Jason, on that?
>> Yeah, I agree. I agree. The uh what was it? The town of Newark and then the town before that >> after Granville where the city was at.
Was that Newark?
>> Newark.
>> That the city part was pretty cool.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> There's a lot to see in Newark. We didn't we probably we could have easily missed stuff because we almost missed the uh one of the Ohio Eerie Canal locks which they got reserved or restored kind of well.
It's pretty neat. And I also like the map of the canal that's on the building in the same area.
I am 100% certain there's other stuff to check out and I may or may not check some stuff out on the rest of my uh trip. Anyways, that is the uh that's the trail. Now we're cutting and we're going to the road trip. This is quality content. Like and subscribe.
>> Bane is the most awesome dude ever.
Put a new effort.
