Kirkwood, originally founded in the 1800s by developers Jesse Clay and James H. Kirkpatrick along the Georgia Railroad, was an independent city from 1899 to 1922 with its own mayor, schools, and water system; after experiencing white flight and industrial decline in the 1960s-70s, it was revitalized in the 1990s by urban pioneers who restored historic homes, leading to its recognition on the National Register of Historic Places.
