The Davy Crockett was a U.S. Army tactical nuclear weapon system developed in 1956, featuring two variants (M-28 with 2 km range and M-29 with 4 km range) that fired the W54 warhead—the smallest nuclear device ever deployed by the U.S. at 23 kg with a 10-20 ton yield. Despite 2,100 units being built, none were used in combat due to severe radiation hazards that exposed firing crews to lethal neutron and gamma radiation, a problem nicknamed 'self-deterrence.' The system was withdrawn from service in 1971 after being stationed in West Germany, South Korea, and Okinawa.

A nuclear bazooka? Seriously? #historyfacts #shorts #usarmyAdded:
In 1956, the Americans created the M28 Davy Crockett, a recoilless weapon that fired a tactical nuclear warhead. The M388 projectile had a range of just 2 to 4 km. The catch, after firing, the crew itself received a dose of radiation.
2100 units were built, but luckily none was ever used in combat. It was withdrawn from service in 1971.
