The Davy Crockett was a U.S. Army tactical nuclear weapon system developed in 1956, featuring two variants (M-28 with 2 km range and M-29 with 4 km range) that fired the W54 warhead—the smallest nuclear device ever deployed by the U.S. at 23 kg with a 10-20 ton yield. Despite 2,100 units being built, none were used in combat due to severe radiation hazards that exposed firing crews to lethal neutron and gamma radiation, a problem nicknamed 'self-deterrence.' The system was withdrawn from service in 1971 after being stationed in West Germany, South Korea, and Okinawa.
