Let’s talk about the Latin American “Little People”

[00:00:00]Let's talk about the Mesoamerican cryptid spirits known by many names such as the Alux and Chaneques to name a few and their anthropological reflections.

[00:00:11]In Mexican folklore, Chaneques means those who inhabit dangerous places or in Nahuatl, owners of the house. These tiny sprite, pixie, or fairy-like beings are connected to the elemental forces. They live in forests, rivers, or caves and are aligned with the earth and water.

[00:00:27]Though each region has had its own cultural impact on these mutable creatures of legend, they are guardians of nature. Comparable mythical beings are found across Mesoamerica and Latin American folklore, often referred to as duende in Spanish. Within Yucatec Mayan folklore, the Yucatan Peninsula's traditions identify similar elemental entities as Aluxes. Chaneques are famous for their mischievous tricks, especially towards those who disrespect nature.

[00:00:54]They are also believed to have the power to shapeshift and become invisible, but their true forms are very much like an indigenous American version of the Western folkloric fae. Wisened features on the svelte naked bodies of miniaturized youth who tend to lead unwary travelers astray. Chaneques are even said to intimidate forest intruders to the point where their souls leave their bodies, requiring a specific ritual to reunite the soul with the body. Many first peoples believed in the existence of a spirit world parallel to ours and they regarded Chaneques and their many names as bridges between these two realms. They have a dual personality that appears in many such intermediary beings as both guides to the wise and respectful or vengeful teacher to the ignorant and disrespectful. The Maya Aluxes seem to have a closer connection to say the loa of voodoo than the fae folk of the European woods because some believe that the Aluxes are created when a farmer builds a little house on his property, often in a maize field.

[00:01:52]The farmer and Alux then have a symbiotic relationship that has to follow certain criterion over a period of time.

[00:01:59]My thoughts and opinions on the Mesoamerican little folk is really not all that dissimilar from all such beings, no matter their geographical origins. Homo sapiens are a peculiar animal. We are often at odds with our environment, unlike any other creature currently walking the globe. We do feel a connection to the natural world. Poets laud it, musicians play it, artists paint it, but many people have trouble directly connecting to it. So, for those people, it is better to have a go-between that unites them with a tree, a rock, a river, a lake.

[00:02:34]Something that can reflect their emotions and their fears, something human-like, but not quite human.

[00:02:41]It is easier than accepting the insignificance of each individual life and seeing yourself connected to a specific moment and environment in time.
