Childhood trauma and religious extremism can lead to severe psychological distortions that manifest in criminal behavior, as demonstrated by a former pastor who kidnapped children from religious families to destroy their faith, believing that unanswered prayers prove the devil's existence and that faith is merely an illusion.

A Detective Discovers a Secret Letter Behind a Savage CrimeAdded:
The film opens by showing someone hurriedly writing a letter. Their hands are covered in wounds and judging by the size of the hands, the writer is clearly still a child. The child then places the letter inside a plastic bottle and hides it beneath a puddle of water by wedging it between iron wires. Around those wires, several human skulls can be seen seemingly deliberately submerged underwater. Sometime later, the bottle comes loose from its hiding place and drifts out from a wooden shack in the middle of the sea known as the boat house. The bottle is then carried away by the ocean current until it finally washes ashore on a beach where it is discovered by a retired soldier swimming nearby. The story then shifts to the headquarters of the Danish police in Copenhagen. There, members of Department Q, Assad and Rose, are shown feeling bored because they have no cases to handle. On top of that, their colleague Carl is currently on leave making the department feel even emptier. Not long after, a police officer named Pasgord and his partner deliver the package containing the bottle to Department Q.
They believe that only Department Q is capable of solving the mystery behind the message inside the bottle. Assad immediately opens the package and discovers a letter inside the bottle, though the writing has already faded.
After examining it more carefully, some parts of the paper appear to contain traces of human blood. Because of this, Assad asks Rose to take the letter to the microbiology department for further examination. Elsewhere, Carl is shown struggling with depression [music] and refusing to return to work. Assad later comes to pick him up and takes him out for a drive so Carl will not remain trapped in his own thoughts. Meanwhile, in a village called Skarrild in the Jutland region of Denmark, two children named Samuel and Magdalena are seen praying for their grandfather's recovery. Samuel and Magdalena grow up in a deeply religious environment under the guidance of their mother, Rakel, and their father, Elias. Their family belongs to a secluded religious community living far away from regular settlements. They regularly participate in worship services and church gatherings alongside other members of the community. One day, the church holds a baptism ceremony for the children. A pastor named Johannes arrives to attend the event, and the congregation warmly welcomes him with great joy. After the ceremony ends, Elias invites Johannes to have a conversation, since it has been a long time since [music] he last visited the church. Johannes then praises the beauty of Elias's plantation and farmland. However, Elias sadly explains that he has been forced [music] to sell the plantation in order to pay for his father's medical treatment, as the old man is seriously ill. Johannes then reminds Elias that faith [music] and family are far more valuable than worldly wealth.
Magdalena and Samuel then step outside to greet Johannes. Magdalena is seen wearing a cross bracelet, indicating that she had once represented their church at a certain religious event.
Johannes gently holds Magdalena's hand and tells her that she possesses the same light in her heart as her father and mother. Since it is already late at night, Johannes eventually says goodbye and heads home. However, because he's extremely tired, he ends up falling asleep inside his car in the middle of a field. The story then shifts back to Copenhagen. At that moment, Carl has returned to work alongside his two colleagues, Assad and Rose. There, Assad and Rose are struggling to decipher the letter found inside the bottle earlier.
Most of the writing has faded and is difficult to read. From the handwriting itself, it is obvious that the letter was written by a child. Based on the moss attached to the bottle, they estimate that it had been drifting in the sea for around 7 to 8 years. In addition, they discover signs suggesting that the bottle may have been thrown from an area near the coast. They also find the initial of the writer, the letter P. Assad and Rose then attempt to reconstruct the faded words in the letter. After piecing it together, the message reads, "We have [music] been captured." Clearly indicating that someone was desperately asking for help.
However, they still have no clue about the location of the kidnapping or the identity of the culprit. The two continue analyzing the letter until they uncover another sentence that says, "Jehovah will save us." This line suggests that the kidnap victims likely came from a Jehovah's Witness family.
Assad then asks Rose to search through records of missing children in Denmark over the last 10 years. Carl explains that during the past decade, only two children had officially disappeared without ever being found, and neither of them had the initial P, nor came from a Jehovah's Witness family. Afterward, Assad and Carl visit a microbiology expert to follow up on the letter's analysis. From the examination, they learned that the letter most likely originated from a coastal area in northern Denmark. There are also indications that the child with the initial P had once lived together with several other children in the same location. Assad and Carl then visit a school that once had students from Jehovah's Witness families. A teacher there explains that they indeed had students from such families several years ago, and one of them was named Trygve. However, according to the school, Trygve had never been officially reported as a kidnapping victim. He stopped attending school while still in first grade after a request from his own parents. School records also show that Trygve disappeared for several hours on one Tuesday morning. The incident occurred after an unfamiliar man came to see him and claimed to be his father.
That man [music] reportedly said that Trygve would be moved to Australia.
However, there was never any official report confirming that the boy actually continued his education there.
The teacher further explains that the children were withdrawn from school at their parents' request, not because of any school decision. From the teacher's use of the word children, Assad and Carl begin to realize that more than one child may have been involved in the case. It is eventually revealed that there was another child named Paul, who was believed to be Trygve's younger brother. Paul also left school on the very same day. They begin to suspect that the P in the letter refers to Paul.
Assad insists that they must immediately locate Paul and his younger brother to determine whether the two boys were truly victims of kidnapping. The story then returns to the Viborg area.
Magdalena and Samuel are shown walking home from school along a quiet [music] road, since their house is located far away from other settlements. During the journey, Magdalena is seen reading a women's magazine, something actually forbidden [music] within the strict religious environment in which they were raised. At that moment, Johannes passes by and offers them a ride. Samuel immediately wants to get into the car, but Magdalena quickly pulls her younger brother away and refuses the offer because they are already used to walking long distances home. Johannes then persuades the two children to get into the car, assuring them that their parents know him well. Magdalena finally agrees and gets in first, followed by Samuel. However, Samuel suddenly screams and tries to run away. Johannes quickly grabs him and drives off with both children. A stranger who happens to pass by briefly witnesses the incident. Back at home, Raquel receives a phone call.
Not long afterwards, she breaks down in hysterical screams after learning that both of her children had been kidnapped and threatened with death. The story then returns to Carl and Assad. The two investigators successfully uncover the identities of Paul and Trygve's parents.
Their parents had been found dead in bed after regularly consuming sleeping pills for six consecutive months, believing it was part of a religious ritual. Carl firmly states that such practices are absolutely not part of Jehovah's Witness teachings.
Carl and Assad then track down Trygve's current whereabouts. He is now living freely with friends in an apartment and leading a rebellious lifestyle. Carl explains that they discovered a letter written by Trygve's older brother and want to discuss it with him. At first, Trygve denies everything and claims he never had a brother. At this point, Carl and Assad ask him to stop pretending.
However, Trygve suddenly lashes out, shouting that his brother is gone and that he no longer cares where Paul is or why he disappeared. Carl and Assad eventually leave the apartment and wait outside. Not long later, Trygve follows them and says he wants to see the letter.
They then bring Trygve to the police station to give a statement about what truly happened to him and Paul. Trygve reveals that around eight years ago, he and his brother had been kidnapped and imprisoned inside a boat house that smelled strongly of seaweed and was surrounded by salty water.
In that place, their hands were tied and they were constantly tortured. Paul was a child who wrote the letter shown at the beginning [music] of the film.
Every day, Trygve also heard sounds resembling machinery, though the noises were faint and difficult to identify.
Trygve cannot remember the face of the kidnapper because the perpetrator always shined an extremely bright flashlight directly at them, blinding their vision so they can never see clearly.
Trygve then recounts the horrifying moments when he witnessed the kidnapper take a pair of scissors and stab Paul to death. Being only a small child at the time, Trygve was completely powerless to save his brother. After the tragic incident, the [music] kidnapper threatened him not to tell anyone what had happened. The perpetrator warned that Jehovah's Witnesses would punish him if he dared to speak out.
Meanwhile, in the city of Viborg, the local police finally receive a report about the kidnapping [music] of two children, who are none other than Magdalena and Samuel. The report comes from an anonymous man who claims he saw the children being abducted in a golden yellow car.
Back at the Copenhagen Police Headquarters, Department Q presents the latest developments of the case to their superior, Marcus Jacobsen, while explaining where the bottle containing the letter had been found.
They then attempt to estimate the direction from which the bottle drifted.
However, the [music] vastness of the sea makes it extremely difficult to determine exactly where it originally came from.
At the same time, Rose receives a phone call from the Viborg police regarding the kidnapping of two children near the village of Skærlund. Hearing this, Carl and Assad immediately travel to Viborg and meet a detective named Lisa to investigate the kidnapping case further.
Lisa provides them with a list of Skærlund villagers, especially families who still have school-age children.
Afterwards, Lisa, Carl, and Assad visit the village to gather information about the child abduction. However, none of the villagers admit that their children had been kidnapped or even recognize the two missing children.
Eventually, they go to Elias's farm to search for more clues, and that's whether the family has noticed anything suspicious around the area.
At first, Elias claims he has seen nothing unusual. He even says that his two children are currently in Sweden.
Assad then asks permission to inspect the inside of the house, but Elias refuses to let them enter.
Meanwhile, inside the house, Raquel continues crying hysterically after losing both of her children.
After leaving Elias's house, Lisa invited Assad and Carl to stop by a restaurant to reanalyze the missing children report. Carl noticed that the restaurant was unusually crowded that night. Lisa explained that it was a celebration of the ascension of Jesus Christ, so many residents were out celebrating. Carl then reviewed the case files again and discovered that Pal and Tryggve had also been kidnapped during the Pentecost celebration. From this, they began to conclude that the perpetrator always carried out kidnappings during major religious holidays. This also strengthened the suspicion that the kidnapping of Tryggve and Pal was connected to the disappearance of Magdalena and Samuel.
Carl immediately contacted Rose to share the discovery. However, [music] Rose had uncovered another shocking fact. The kidnapper had actually called Raquel and Elias shortly after the abduction took place.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, Johannes, who was revealed to be the kidnapper, entered his boat house, which he used as a place to imprison the victims. Inside, Magdalena and Samuel were seen continuously praying and begging for help. Johannes then shined the flashlight into their faces and scolded them because Magdalena had been caught reading a women's magazine. Johannes told them that only God could save them now. He then ordered the two children to keep praying, saying that perhaps God's help would eventually come.
>> [music] >> However, Magdalena slowly shook her head, showing that she had begun to lose hope. Johannes immediately shouted at her harshly until she resumed praying again. As he watched Magdalena continue praying, Johannes suddenly remembered his own childhood with his older sibling, [music] when their mother forced them to constantly worship and pray.
The next day, >> [music] >> Carl returned to Elias's farm after discovering suspicious financial transactions.
>> [music] >> It turned out that Elias had transferred all of his parents' pension savings, as well as Raquel's savings, into his personal account. Carl and Assad also discovered that Elias actually [music] had no family in Sweden. At this point, Elias began trying to avoid Carl and Assad. He even struck Carl. Assad restrained Elias, but Elias shouted that they were not allowed to speak with the police.
Carl then asked Elias to tell the truth because in his opinion, this was not the first time a criminal had used such a pattern. Shortly afterward, Rakel appeared and said that it was time for them to tell Carl and Assad the truth.
Then she invited the two detectives into the house.
Rakel confessed that at first they did not realize their children had been kidnapped. Then one day, the perpetrator called their house. He spoke in Norwegian and demanded that they ransom Samuel and Magdalena using all the money they had. That was why Elias had transferred all the family savings because the kidnapper knew in great detail exactly how much wealth they possessed. Rakel also admitted that they knew the perpetrator, who was none other than Johannes. Johannes had visited their church several times around two or three years earlier and claimed to be a pastor sent from the central church. The day before the kidnapping, Johannes came to the church again. Since they had not seen him in a long time, Rakel and Elias invited him to dinner. During that meeting, Elias mentioned [music] his plan to sell their farm, which likely allowed Johannes to learn that the family had a substantial amount of money.
Assad began to suspect that Johannes was not the perpetrator's real name. He asked Rakel and Elias if they had a photograph of Johannes, but unfortunately, they did not have any pictures of him at all. Elias then explained that they had been instructed to send the ransom money that very night. He was ordered to bring the money by train to Hamburg. After the train departed, Johannes would call and inform him where to leave the ransom money.
Afterward, [music] Elias would have to get off the next station. Johannes promised to return their children if the ransom was successfully delivered.
However, Johannes also threatened to kill their children if Elias and Rakel [music] told anyone else. That was why Elias did not want to involve anyone else in the case.
Carl then offered for himself and Assad to secretly monitor the ransom exchange.
Carl promised that they would not act recklessly. However, >> [music] >> Elias immediately refused because he believed such a move was too risky. Carl then explained that a similar case had happened before and only one child had ever been returned because the parents chose to rely solely on God instead of involving people who were actually experienced in handling kidnappings.
[music] In the end, Elias agreed to Carl's proposal. However, he firmly warned Carl and Assad not to make even the slightest mistake.
The Danish police then began organizing a plan to capture Johannes. Two officers were stationed at every train station along the railway route to Hamburg.
Several other officers boarded the train from the city of Randers, while the rest were assigned to escort Elias. They were ordered to monitor every train car and be suspicious of anyone acting strangely. All officers wore plain clothes to avoid attracting attention.
In addition, a helicopter was prepared in case the perpetrator attempted to escape. Meanwhile, Johannes was seen spending time with his wife before eventually saying goodbye and leaving.
Before departing, he briefly stared at a photograph of a young girl kept inside his car. Elsewhere, the officers began carrying out the plan. The helicopter took off first while Carl and Assad headed to Elias's house. [music] Upon arriving there, they attached the tracking device to Elias's body and instructed him to go alone to the station. At the previous station, Rose and another officer had already boarded the train. Meanwhile, Passgard disguised himself as an ordinary passenger and pretended to help Elias buy a ticket before boarding a different train car.
As soon as the train left the station, the helicopter began following it from above. Marcus and the rest of the team monitored the situation from a distance, while Carl and Assad followed the railway route by car using a separate road. Not long afterward, a suspicious passenger was seen making a phone call inside the train. At the same time, Elias received a call from Johannes ordering him to go to the restroom near the train door. Elias followed the instructions while Passgard [music] and the other officers carefully observed his movements. Johannes then instructed Elias to unlock the train door lever. At the same time, Rose and her partner approached the man who had been making the phone call. However, it turned out that the man was not their target. Johannes was not on the train at all. The moment they realized this, Carl and Assad immediately sped their car toward the railroad tracks. Elsewhere, Johannes ordered Elias to prepare to throw out the ransom money, telling him that he could only save one of his two children. At that moment, Carl's car nearly crashed through a railroad crossing barrier and was almost struck by the train. Fortunately, they managed to stop just in time before continuing the chase. Not long afterward, Johannes ordered Elias to throw the bag of ransom money out of the train. [music] However, the moment the bag was thrown, Johannes suddenly hung up the call. Panicked, Elias immediately jumped off the moving train to search for his children. Elias hit the ground hard and suffered severe injuries, but he still struggled to his feet in the middle of the forest. There, he discovered a suspicious-looking car.
However, when he approached it, the vehicle was empty. Suddenly, Johannes appeared from behind and stabbed Elias with a pair of scissors. Moments later, Carl's voice could be heard calling Elias's name. Realizing the police were close, Johannes quickly fled. Carl fired several shots toward the perpetrator, but Johannes managed to escape in his car. [music] Carl continued chasing him while firing his pistol again, but he was thrown back while trying to get close to the vehicle. Assad soon arrived and found Elias in critical condition.
>> [music] >> Carl immediately contacted the helicopter so Elias could be evacuated to the hospital. At the same time, Carl found the photograph of the young girl that Johannes had previously been seen looking at inside his car. The photo had fallen at the crime scene and could potentially become an important clue regarding the perpetrator's identity.
While Elias was rushed to the hospital, news of the kidnapping of Magdalena and Samuel on the train quickly spread to the public and became a major story across Denmark. Raquel watched the news while her husband lay dying in the hospital. In her despair, Raquel immediately blamed Carl for everything that had happened. According to her, Carl's interference had only reduced the chances of them ever seeing Magdalena and Samuel again. Elsewhere, Johannes was seen treating the gunshot wound he had suffered while escaping through the forest. He also watched the news coverage about the kidnapping, which now displayed Carl's face on television.
From that moment on, Johannes began viewing Carl as a target of his revenge.
Meanwhile, at the microbiology laboratory, Rose brought the photograph found at the crime scene for further examination. From the analysis, it was estimated that the photo had been taken sometime between 1993 and 1996. They also discovered that the retina of the woman in the picture appeared abnormal, indicating permanent damage to her eyesight. The team attempted to match the fingerprints left on the photograph.
Unfortunately, the owner of the fingerprints could not be identified in any database. At the same time, Carl suddenly received a phone call from Johannes. In a cold tone, Johannes told Carl that he had made a terrible mistake. He even threatened to kill the two kidnapped children before abruptly hanging up. Carl immediately realized that Johannes was likely inside the hospital where Elias was being treated.
He quickly ordered all entrances and exits of the hospital to be locked down.
[music] However, Johannes had already infiltrated the hospital disguised as a doctor. He secretly injected something into Raquel after previously doing the same to Elias. Afterward, [music] Johannes calmly walked away without arousing suspicion. Several doctors who sensed something unusual rushed into Elias's room, unaware that the real culprit had just passed them by. At the same moment, Raquel suddenly began suffering violent convulsions just as Carl and Assad entered the room. Carl immediately rushed out to search for Johannes, while inside the room Elias began experiencing unbearable pain due to the injection. With the last of [music] his strength, Elias revealed that Johannes had disguised himself as a doctor. Assad quickly relayed that information to Carl. Not long afterward, Johannes deliberately revealed himself, prompting [music] Carl to chase after him immediately. However, during the pursuit, Elias's condition worsened rapidly until he eventually died from a heart attack triggered by Johannes's injection. Carl and several officers continued pursuing Johannes into the hospital parking area. Upon arriving there, Carl instead found Pasgord critically injured after being attacked by Johannes. Assad soon arrived, but it was already too late. Johannes had tied Pasgord's hands to the steering wheel of a car, causing the critically wounded man to drive uncontrollably until the vehicle crashed into a truck. At the same time, Johannes managed to overpower Karl and abduct him. The story then flashes back several decades earlier. It is revealed that Johannes and his older sister grew up with a cruel and fanatically religious mother. One day, the sister tried to fight back, but their mother responded by throwing a chemical liquid into her face while praying for God's protection. That traumatic incident left permanent damage to the sister's eyes. Back in the present, Mark and the police team began reviewing CCTV footage to track where Johannes had taken Karl. They eventually identified the car used by the perpetrator and discovered that the vehicle was registered under the name Mia, Johannes's wife. Shortly afterward, Rose delivered an important update.
Trygve had finally recognized the sound he used to hear while being held captive years earlier. That clue could potentially lead to the location where the children were being imprisoned. Rose replayed the audio recording revealing a sound similar to a giant machine surrounding a floating building in salty water. One of the staff members then realized that the sound strongly resembled the noise produced by wind turbines near coastal areas. At the same time, Johannes succeeded in bringing Karl to his boat house and dragged him into the place where the victims were being held captive. Meanwhile, Assad went to Mia's house. However, upon arriving there, he discovered that Mia had already been murdered by Johannes himself. Not long afterward, Assad received a call from Rose confirming that the sound in the recording indeed came from wind turbines located near the boat house. Now, they had to narrow down the search among hundreds of wind turbines scattered throughout the region. While examining Johannes's car, Assad found a facial sketch that looked strikingly similar to the woman in the old photograph discovered earlier. On top of the sketch were the initials Becca. That clue eventually led Assad to Rebecca, Johannes's biological sister, whose eyesight had been permanently damaged after their own mother threw chemicals into her face many years ago.
Assad then spoke with Rebecca and explained all the crimes Thomas had committed over the years. From that conversation, it was revealed that Johannes's real name was actually Thomas. Rebecca explained that her younger brother was now known as a successful businessman in Germany and and [music] frequently traveled between countries. Despite their dark past, Thomas deeply cared for his sister. He had even bought the luxurious house where Rebecca currently lived. On the other hand, Rebecca also revealed that this was not the first time Thomas had kidnapped children. For years, Thomas had specifically targeted pairs of siblings from extremely religious families. All of it stemmed from their own childhood. Thomas and Rebecca had been raised by a mother who was fanatically religious, but also extremely cruel. They were often physically abused in the name of faith.
Assad then persuaded Rebecca to reveal Thomas' hiding place because two children's lives were currently in danger. After hesitating for a while, Rebecca finally admitted that Thomas was likely hiding in a boat house near the Danish coast. Hearing this, Assad immediately departed by helicopter to search for the location. Meanwhile, inside the boat house, >> [music] >> Carl was chained with both hands tied.
Nearby sat Thomas, calmly waiting for Carl to fully regain consciousness.
Magdalena and Samuel were also imprisoned in the same manner. Thomas then asked Carl whether he knew who he truly was. Calmly, Thomas confessed that he was the devil's child. He then recounted his past. After his mother tortured his sister with chemicals, Thomas suffered deep religious trauma.
Instead of believing that God would save them, Thomas felt that the devil had whispered courage into him, giving him the strength to murder his mother with scissors and finally end all their suffering. From that moment onward, Thomas [music] believed that the devil had make him far stronger than before.
That was why he hated deeply religious people. In his view, faith was merely an illusion that would slowly crumble when someone continued to suffer without ever receiving help from God. That was the reason Thomas always kidnapped children from religious families. He wanted to destroy their faith little by little.
Thomas believed that when prayers were never answered, doubt would grow like a virus and destroy a person's belief from within. Now, Thomas intended to do the same thing to Carl. He wanted to completely destroy his faith. However, Carl said that all of it was pointless because he had never truly been a religious person from the start. Even so, Thomas refused to believe him.
Suddenly, Thomas threw Samuel into the water and began drowning him. Carl immediately begged Thomas to release Samuel and instead make him the victim.
However, Thomas continued tormenting Samuel mercilessly until the boy eventually lost consciousness. After Samuel passed out, Thomas coldly declared that faith had failed to save anyone. He then untied Magdalena's hands and handed her a pair of scissors.
Thomas ordered Magdalena to kill him as revenge for what had happened to Samuel.
However, Magdalena was too terrified and unable to do it. At that exact moment, the sound of a helicopter approaching the boathouse could be heard. Assad had finally found Thomas's hideout. After descending from the helicopter, Assad immediately moved in to search for the children. Realizing the police had arrived, Thomas quickly fled the boathouse. Carl then asked Magdalena to untie his hands before immediately diving into the water to search for Samuel. At the bottom of the water, Carl saw numerous children's skulls belonging to Thomas's previous victims.
Fortunately, Carl managed to find Samuel and quickly brought him back to the surface. Carl then pressed on Samuel's chest to force out the swallowed water until the boy finally started breathing again. Meanwhile, Assad successfully entered the boathouse and found Carl, Magdalena, and Samuel alive. Carl informed him that Thomas had escaped, so Assad immediately ran out to pursue him.
Not far away, Thomas was seen running across the grassy coastline. Assad chased after him, but suddenly, Thomas attacked from behind, causing Assad to fall into the water. Thomas believed Assad had drowned. However, to his shock, Assad resurfaced and dragged Thomas beneath the water. In their final struggle, Assad held Thomas underwater until the man finally died while still gripping the scissors in his hand. After everything was over, Assad walked out of the water. Inside the boathouse, Carl stood together with Magdalena and Samuel, all of them finally safe.
Sometime later, Carl, Assad, Rose, Lisa, and Trygve were seen attending a church service. All they had experienced made them once again reflect on the meaning of faith in their respective lives.
Elsewhere, Raquel and her two children slowly began to rebuild their lives.
However, Samuel still appeared traumatized and withdrawn after the kidnapping ordeal. Raquel eventually decided to leave the church behind and take Samuel and Magdalena away so they could begin a new life somewhere else.
Not long afterward, Carl and Assad walked out of the church together. Carl thanked Assad for everything they had gone through together. In the distance, children could be seen playing and laughing happily. Carl then realized that he had always viewed children as weak beings who didn't understand the world, but now he understood that their innocence and hope were actually something incredibly precious.
