On August 15th, 1977, [music] the Big Ear radio telescope picked up an intense, narrow-band radio signal from space. The burst lasted about 72 seconds, the length of one observation cycle. Astronomer Jerry Ehman examined the printout and circled the data, writing a single word, "Wow."
