29/05/2026 - Dry and sunny across central parts - Afternoon Weather Forecast UK – Met Office WeatherAdded:
Many of us have noticed the fresher feel to things out there today. But that doesn't mean it's the end of the hot weather for all of us. Looking at the earlier satellite imagery, and I've put the pressure picture on here as well.
And you can see the high pressure that's been dominating our weather through this week leading to the largely sunny skies.
And it's this that's led to the hot air coming in from the south. That's now clearing away towards the east. And as a result, a number of fronts are able to come across the UK. We have a number of fronts across us at the moment. And there's one waiting out or a frontal system waiting out in the Atlantic which I'll talk about in a second. The fronts across us have already brought a bit of rain. If I put the earlier radar on, you can see some shower burst of rain across parts of southern southeastern England.
There was some rumbles of thunder across parts of the Midlands this morning. And we have some rain across parts of northwest Scotland. And it's in these areas where we're going to continue to see a bit of cloud, bit of rain through this afternoon. Staying quite wet across many parts of Scotland. quite blustery here and uh in the southeast of England, further shower bursts of rain. These will become more confined to just the southeast as we head later on in the day. In between these two zones, however, there will actually be a lot of dry, sunny weather to be had. Plenty of sunshine by the afternoon across Northern Ireland and across large chunks of England and Wales just away from the Southeast. Despite the sunshine, however, because we have slightly fresher air across us, temperatures will be down marketkedly compared to what we've seen through much of this week.
Mid to high teens across parts of the north where we have the cloud and the rain. High teens low to possibly mid20s further south. In the far southeast, we do actually still have some hot air here. And so, uh, temperatures could get to highs around 27, 28 Celsius, but it's a bit tricky because of the cloud. And so that may stop temperatures getting as high as you might otherwise expect.
Later on, we see any showery bursts of rain in the southeast clearing away. And the rain across Scotland will become largely confined to just the far north of Scotland overnight with plenty of dry weather following in behind. But then we start to see some rain pushing into the far west of Northern Ireland and the far west of Scotland as we head towards dawn on Saturday morning. Most places though having a a dry picture and there will be some clear skies. fresher air meaning temperatures will be a little bit lower than they have been through some recent nights. It's it's not going to be chilly. No, not at all. But yeah, just not as warm, not as muggy, not as uncomfortable for sleeping perhaps as it has been recently. Then that front that I mentioned earlier starts to make its way in. We have a whole frontal system that's going to bring yes, initially rain to just western Northern Ireland or western Scotland, but it will feed further east and northeastward through Saturday. So across much of Northern Ireland, it's going to turn wet through the morning and then the more persistent rain pushing across parts of Scotland through the day as well. Behind the more persistent rain, there will be some showery bursts for western Northern Ireland, Western Scotland as we go through into the latter stages of the afternoon and into the evening. And these could be heavy. They could even be some uh there could even be some rumbles of thunder. Some intense downpours could cause some problems. Meanwhile, across the bulk of England and Wales, actually a largely fine day, even brighter, sunnier than today in the southeast.
Despite the sunshine, we still have that fresher air across us. And so for many, still temperatures down on what we've seen earlier on in the week across parts of the Northwest. It's uh you know, they'll be pegged back because of the cloud and the rain here. But worth highlighting, still in the southeast. As I mentioned at the start, there is still some hot air around. So um mid to high 20s looks quite likely. 28 29 Celsius perhaps in some parts of the southeast around the London area. Now in a normal May that would be pretty exceptional, but because of the hot spell that we had earlier on this week, it's not going to feel as hot as that. Nonetheless, that is pretty hot for some in the southeast.
Like I said, watch out for some heavy, perhaps thundery downpours across western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland through Saturday evening.
Elsewhere across Scotland, the rain breaks up but starts to push into the far north and west of England and Wales.
Further south and east, we cling on to the drier weather for longer. And then into Sunday, well, we're looking set to have a day of sunshine and showers. The heaviest, most likely to be thundery showers will be across parts of Scotland. Meanwhile, towards the southeast, you have the greatest chance of avoiding them. And by Sunday, that fresher air will have pushed to all parts. So, temperatures dropping only to around average for the time of year, but just nowhere near as high as they have been recently. Whatever you're up to this weekend, make sure you stay up to date with the forecast. It may affect your plans, particularly on Sunday with the chance of those showers. They'll be a little bit uh tricky to pinpoint exactly. So, keep up to date with the radar, which you can do on our app.
Bye-bye.
