From 1958 to 1979, China conducted a 20-year artillery bombardment of Kinmen (Quemoy), a Taiwanese island located 2 miles from mainland China, firing shells only on odd-numbered days while Taiwan returned fire on even-numbered days; this predictable conflict, which began with 600 guns firing 40,000 shells in just two hours in 1958 and resulted in up to a million shells falling on the small island, was eventually ended when the United States switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979, and the survivors repurposed the steel from the shells into kitchen knives, with one shell capable of producing up to 60 blades that remain sold today.
