In April 1945, as Berlin was about to fall, Hermann Göring sent a telegram to Hitler asking if he would be allowed to take over power if Hitler was no longer capable of leading the country. Although this was technically legal, Hitler, in his paranoid and desperate state, interpreted it as betrayal. Martin Bormann, Hitler's close assistant, fueled this suspicion by making Hitler believe Göring was trying to seize power before Berlin's complete collapse. Enraged, Hitler ordered Göring stripped of all positions, expelled from the Nazi Party, and demanded his immediate arrest. This incident illustrates how even Hitler's most trusted lieutenants began to distrust and turn against each other in the final days of the Third Reich, as survival became the primary concern.
