Joe effectively cuts through the noise of diet culture by returning to the fundamental reality of caloric surplus. However, his focus on portion control over food quality ignores the biological signals that make modern processed foods so difficult to stop eating.

THIS Is What REALLY Makes You Fat!- LIVEAdded:
the sugar. Stop blaming the carbs. Buddy Paul's going to join us and uh let's knock this out. This is YouTube Live. We do these once a month.
All right, trainer Joe, we need to talk about what really makes people fat because I I hear it a good amount and and you're even more into this these conversations than I am. You do, you know, your weekly meetings twice a week.
Phase two, you're talking to people.
I'm hearing it way too often. Yeah, if I just stop doing this, then I'd lose the weight. I know that this is my problem.
And it's like they think they know, but I'm listening and I'm like, that's not really it, right? That's not your problem.
>> We're so often wrong in what we're hitting. And this is one of the biggest things we're wrong on, and that's if I just uh didn't eat sugar, my life would be my life would be so good or so much better. We were trying to think for the the title for the thumbnail, you know, what are the things that people often blame? Sugar, carbs is the obvious one.
Alcohol, >> yes, >> would have been a big one.
>> Yes, we have entire industries now devoted to low carb. You know, we had it a long time ago in Atkins and now you got the keto lifestyle which is low carb. I mean, it is it's a big thing. I guess that intermittent fasting are two of the the big ones and and we call them various things. Paleo, right? But but most of these diets now are low carb diets. And we don't to to be straight. I don't have an issue with somebody that doesn't want to eat a lot of carbs.
>> I mean, you're a fan of of heavy protein.
>> I'm a fan of that. Yeah, it makes sense.
But it's Here's the thing.
I I just read about a pastor who passed away and it it just came across my feed and I'm like, "Oh, this is so sad." He was 5 uh three years old and it said he died of natural causes. I even have a picture over there and um I'm going to show it to you for a fact, but I'm like 53. He died of natural causes. I'm like, "What's natural?" And it breaks my heart. I'm not wanting to be insensitive at all.
>> Sure. This is just something different state >> you stumbled across. It just came across my feed when I see 53y old man of God pastor. I'm like this a lot of people are hurting when this happens. And for me what I do I immediately go to was his life cut short. It's just who I am because of a a lifestyle because of an illness that maybe was brought on by obesity. That's what I do. It's what I do.
>> Yeah.
>> And so I I looked it up and he's doing a talk. He's obviously respected in his community in Georgia. Reverend Derek Dumis dies at 53, leaving a legacy of unwavering faith. I am not taking anything away from somebody that dies in their 50s, 60s, 80s, whatever, for whatever reason. Man of God. Would he have been a greater man of God had he eaten differently? I'm not saying that.
You know what I'm saying? He's no longer with us. That's all I'm saying. He's no longer with us. I wish he was. And there's And you know what? You know what the reason was that he died? It wasn't carbs and sugar.
>> Okay. So, now you're getting back to >> It's not carbs and sugar. What is it?
What is really the thing that's messing with people? And I'm going to propose it's not carbs and sugar. Here's what it is.
You get I was at Panera today looking around. People come into Panera, get whatever salad you want. Come into Panera every day for lunch. Get whatever salad you want. Get you a drink.
Whatever drink you want and eat it. Go home. I don't care. You did fine. You know when it's a problem.
I get the salad. I get three Dr. Peppers. I eat the bread. I eat it out of a bread bowl. I eat the cookie. And they're like, "Oh, I need to lower my carbs and sugar." No, you don't. You just need to eat a salad for lunch.
But now that we have processed it.
>> So hold on. Let me just make sure I'm understanding. You just ended that spiel saying you just need to eat a salad for lunch. Is it the salad that is going to make the difference or is it the eating less like sticking to a salad?
>> It's not the salad. Right. You're That's a fair question because that's that's exactly what I think everybody else is I want to understand.
>> What did you say? I want to make sure I understand. We blame it on, oh, he needs to go on a low carb diet. No, just don't go into a place and order three meals.
That's the problem. That's the problem.
You're eating for two people and they're like, I need to eat fewer carbs. You need to stop eating for two people. I have people that that get all upset when I in our how to lose 100 pounds in six months. Have you seen what some people get upset about with breakfast? I haven't looked at the comments on that one recently >> that we recommend oatmeal. Oatmeal.
Oatmeal is gonna shoot my sugar through the roof is what they say. Spike my sugar. I'm diabetic. I can't eat oatmeal.
>> Do you know why you're diabetic? It ain't because of oatmeal.
It ain't because of sugar. It's cuz you've been eating for two people. Of course you're getting double the sugar, double the carbs, double everything.
>> Let me ask you this real quick. You You said here's the issue. It's you're eating three meals.
You could really go to most restaurants and eat one meal. So, you're not actually saying they're eating. You're saying that by eating one meal, when you get the chips, when you get the drink that you get a obviously you're going to get a refill or two with it when you get a cookie that should be like the calorie-wise that's kind of three meals.
>> Yes. But really ate three meals. One meal.
>> Yes. your one meal was all day and you're like, "Oh, I need to go low carb." No, you need to go one meal.
>> And we're blaming these little things here. And before we Man, I remember growing up and I didn't know what the It was amazing. We brought these foods into our home. The Pop-Tart is like, "You mean it's ready to eat?" And now we That's all we know. It's ready to eat.
You go get it, it's ready to eat. So now, because it's processed the way it is, we can eat double what we used to be able to eat.
And we are I need to go low sugar, low carb, less noodles, less bread. You just eating for two people because you're eating something we didn't even know what it was 50 years ago. We didn't know what this stuff was. Now we're introducing it to our bodies and like, yeah, this is great. And we eat too much because it's hyper palatable. It's processed. And we're like, I need to lower my I knew a girl one time. I was doing a thing with the with the modeling. Yes, I used to model >> and uh and this one girl that was doing a commercial with us, she was uh she was talking. It was like a three-day thing.
It was a lot of fun. And so you're with these people and she was like, "I'm I'm doing zero carbs." And I was like, and she was, you know, young, didn't we much, you know, but she's doing zero carbs. It's her thing. Zero. And I'm watching her eat and stuff. And I'm like, well, I saw her eat a few carbs.
It wasn't zero carb, but she was obviously very low carb. I'm like, that's fine, but you don't have to do that. Look at you. How often you eat ice cream?
>> I am a ice cream >> connoisseur.
>> Connoisseur >> professional. Every night, isn't it?
>> I eat it pretty much every night.
>> Yeah, you poor unhealthy person. You know, and that's the thing. It What are we saying is healthy and unhealthy? We want to look at sugar and carbs. And I we can look at all kinds of people that are specimens of health that eat lots of sugar and carbs, but you start eating for two people.
Remember that Orson Wells what his doctor told him?
>> Mhm.
>> He came in, he's morbidly obese. The doctor didn't say, "Stop eating sugar and carbs." He said, "Stop having intimate dinners for four unless you invite three other people." Trainer Joe, did you uh miss your coffee today? is you are coming in hot. You are savage.
>> I'll tell you what I did.
>> Yeah. What is it? Please fill us in.
>> And y'all need to do it, too.
Man, I listen to some music and I'm scrolling and all these things come up about America and about this guy singing just out in the blue out of nowhere and it sounds wonderful and all these Christian messages are coming through and I'm listening to music and patriotic music and Toby Keith and suddenly and and she starts Miss America starts shaking her fist and I was just pumped up.
>> So is that what it is?
>> I did get pumped up before this. I was like, man, I'm ready to run through a break.
>> So, you are using this to just really >> see, but see, that is >> Go ahead.
>> That is the feel-good hormone in my body that I am allowing to be released by doing worship, by listening to music, by reading something before they see, we can do things like that that change it that change our makeup inside. And people are like, I'll just take a pill.
Go listen to some music. Go work out and turn on your favorite music and turn it loud. Do you know what gets you pumped up?
That that gets me pumped up as well.
Yes.
>> Doesn't it? So, did I get a little should I confess that I got a little pumped up before this? Cuz I wanted to make an impact. Yes. I I apologize to everybody. I'm pumped up.
So, did that answer your question? It's not sugar, carbs, and alcohol.
So, boil it. boil it down to how can we find success if our culture >> is so just streamlining these lifestyles that are going to leave us fat >> and and and and when I just said that I'm like should have lost 20% of our audience when I just said it's our culture cuz I wasn't done but it's you refusing to be countercultural. See, we our culture says you got to do it this way. And it's and we're living in a weird place of you got to eat no sugar and no carbs or eat keto. And I one lady got mad at us cuz we when I said you don't need carbs. See, so I'm not saying that they're not the enemy, but they're also something you don't need. So what people do is they get this hyper relationship with it.
>> We want to be so extreme in our approach. We think that no card. We think that if we're extreme that we're doing the right thing.
>> You got to be doing it right.
>> So, you're saying that's not necessarily the case.
>> No. And I think that exposes some of our issues when we go extreme rather than just holding it loosely. Oh, you shouldn't eat that. How about just eat a little and people go nuts. How about just eat a little of it? Well, it's not good for you. Well, you know, a little is not going to hurt you. You know, and we we have issue with that. It is a difficult thing. And so we do want the all or nothing approach to it, don't we?
>> I'm uh I'm excited. Let's let's read through some of these comments. People are weighing in.
>> But yeah, that's man, I I tend to agree with you. I made a real on Instagram today talking about Subway and I just kind of knew it was going to happen, but a little push back of people saying, or at least one person I'm thinking of, why are you even eating at Subway? And we get so hung up.
>> Why are you even eating at Subway?
Because don't you know that their meat has blah blah blah >> and their bread is blah blah blah >> and blah blah blah and they use seed oils and blah blah blah and I'm like you know what I'm doing just fine.
>> Guilty. Guilty.
>> I'm I got a 6 in sandwich and there's meat on it and veggies and I'm doing just fine. Yeah, you're going to you're going to complain about that and that's the thing. You're welcome to do that and start a YouTube channel and start why you shouldn't eat Subway. That's fine.
That's fine. That's not our channel.
>> That's not this channel. say that they don't have, you know, there are maybe you should be eating a little more at one place over another place or cooking your meals at home to avoid certain battles to avoid certain things. But at the end of the day, we're trying to major on the majors here on this channel rather than majoring on the minor minors. People love people love people that struggle with weight loss love to major on the minors.
There was a one girl at a at a gathering we were at who was who said I heard her say she'd like to be healthier, lose some weight, and she was probably 200 lb overweight. And they had chips and dip and pizza and salad at this event. And I heard her say, "Oh, I'm not going to eat that dip. I don't eat such and such."
Something is in the dip.
>> And that is the game that we play. It's like, "I'm not going to eat this ingredient, >> but I'm morbidly obese." Mhm.
>> And and we justify at least I eat healthy. And that's the dumbest thing in the world. No, you don't. If you're morbidly obese, you don't eat healthy because once you've eaten enough, if you eat any more, it's not healthy. So don't say, "I overeat, but I eat healthy."
Because once you overeat, it was no longer healthy. We've got to have a different way of looking at it, or else we're going to stay there. It's not sugar and carbs. You're eating food that's barely even food.
It came in this box. It was ready when you got it. It's barely food. Hey, if if if there's a label on the box, and you know, I'm not a purist with this. I I eat anything. But if there's a label on the box, it is a warning label.
>> Mhm.
>> It's here's what you're about to get into here. This ain't just an apple >> because it wouldn't need a warning label. Here's what you're here's what's in this thing and we're going to give it to you from the most to the least. The least are going to be preservatives and this and that. And then these top ingredients, the first things are what's mostly in here. If sugar is one of the first three ingredients, >> yeah.
>> Do you know what you got? It's >> a very sugary >> dessert. You're eating dessert.
>> Dessert.
>> But we call it pancakes. No, it's cake.
Oh, we're like pancakes. It's cake.
>> Hey, I will say for the record, people are liking your enthusiasm, trainer Joe.
>> I told you >> people are appreciating.
>> Don't look at boring, sleepy stuff. I got called out yesterday for looking sleepy. One of my talks.
>> Uh Tuy27 says, "You you keep it real.
You're so different from every other weight loss channel."
>> Amen.
>> You both are the best. Um but I did see one. Uh oh, Green Eyes says, "I eat a Halo Top every night and I'm still losing."
>> A Halo Top is that Nope. Nope. It's that >> It's a low carb sugar, isn't it? Yeah.
No wonder you're still losing. You're doing Halo Top.
Um, >> yeah, it's >> necessary truth. And guys, if you have any more questions, we can get to a few more here. Necessary truth. Trainer Joe says that one struggle is 30 grams of protein each meal for women over 50. I I guess that this person's saying it's it's tough to get that much protein.
>> It is tough. But see, here's what here's what people do. You could fix your breakfast with a big old omelette. Big old omelette, right? And a glass of orange juice. And people are like, "Don't have orange juice." Oh, you can have a big old omelette and a glass of orange juice. Would I recommend that?
No. What would I recommend? A big old omelette and an orange.
>> Oh, >> big omelette and an orange. Can you have the orange juice? Would you be fine?
Yes. Is it better to have the orange because of what it's providing you? Yes.
So, have the orange. But here's what people do. They go to Starbucks and order whatever. And a big old thousand calorie.
>> Don't get Don't get me started.
>> Thousand calorie coffee. And then what do they start saying? They need to reduce >> carbs. If I just reduced my carbs and sugar, surely not.
>> Of course. Once you introduce some monstrous thing into your life. Yes. Now you need to start limiting it. Do you see? That's what I'm trying to say here.
>> Say that. Say that again. Say that again.
>> Once you bring in this monstrous thing into your life at all. Yeah. Now we got to start limiting here. I'm bringing in a thousand calories in a cup of coffee that's supposed to have 10 calories. Oh, I need to reduce my sugar and carb intake. Well, duh.
Don't get me started on the coffee. And And so we're like, "Oh, it's a sugar and carb thing." No, it's that thing you just ordered. What was that? Eight bucks and it's got 1,000 calories. And you're wondering why you're 50 lbs overweight.
>> An omelette. Have an omelette and an orange. You see, because we don't eat that way. We We bring in this stuff that's Who even knows what it is I'm consuming? You're like, "I need to reduce it." Yeah. I don't even know what it is.
>> And no one thinks of their, you know, >> I eat it. I'm not saying I don't, but I don't eat it like they eat it.
>> No. No one thinks of their thousand calorie >> super sugar, super sugary, super creamy latte frozen cappuccino mappuccino. No one No one thinks of that as a a meal substitute. And if they did, it's not a great meal substitute. But calorie-wise, it's easily a meal substitute. Maybe some of you guys do think of that as a meal substitute. So that's what we have.
Most don't.
>> No, you don't look at it as a meal, >> right?
>> How many people like, "Well, here's a here's a thousand calorie meal. I'm going to drink this coffee. Here's my lunch.
>> It's one of my meals." No, you don't.
That's your That's your treat.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. The issue is not that.
>> Yeah.
>> You can have any any salad you want. Eat it. Enjoy it. We don't have to be picky.
It's like when I talk about eating at at uh Red Lobster.
>> Oh yeah.
>> I ate everything.
>> We know that your beef with Red Lobster.
>> I ate everything they gave me. But I didn't eat cheddar bay biscuits. I didn't eat dessert. I didn't have three drinks. I didn't. So those are the things. It's like, yeah, because you did that. Now guess what? You get to start doing skipping oatmeal for breakfast cuz you're pre-diabetic now. Not because you ate oatmeal.
It's because you ate three meals >> before lunch.
>> Before lunch and now you're like, I gotta go low carb. No, you don't. You don't. Isn't this true and real and honest? And that's the way it is. Now I got to go low carb >> cuz I ate everything on the menu.
>> Trainer Joe, can I be honest? I was kind of hoping at the beginning that you were going to give us maybe like four or five tips, but I will say now that I'm kind of here in the vein that this video has gone down, it is very hard-hitting. So, even though you focused a little more on just where it's at, you just did a very deep dive into these kind of one major thing, I think it may hit people in a pretty raw way, in a deeper place. So I you know I you you brought some good stuff today, man. You brought some fire today. People seem to be like >> get from this what they need.
>> Yeah.
>> If you're ready, you realize, oh yeah, I got to do low sugar because not cuz I eat a little sugar. It's cuz I mean for two people.
>> Yeah, that's good. More people need to receive need it to >> and it's not soak this in >> and have mercy. I Lord bless his family.
this. It's not normal to die at 53.
>> Mhm.
>> And he did and I I can't remember everything I said about it, but he did mention he was on dialysis. Did I mention he's on diialysis that was caused by high blood pressure that affected his kidneys and it's like that's affected by just and he said it's lifestyle things, you know. So I'm like, "Yes, he said." And he's trying to help and he was doing what he needed to do other than I would say probably he didn't have the understanding that would have been helpful or the means or whatever to to get healthy. This man should have been a healthy weight, an ideal weight, living on a real healthy way of doing things, and he should be with us 30 more years. That's how I look at anybody that dies at 53. Certainly some of us die at 53 for unknown reasons, but too many of us die at 53 doesn't make him less.
>> Yeah, you're right. Right. And you said that >> it makes him not with us.
>> Right. Exactly.
>> And he should be with us. Too many people, spiritual, godly people can be taken out and we're like, well, then God, if God wanted him here, wouldn't he keep him there? Hey, he lets you eat.
>> Yeah, >> he lets you eat. So, no, I would disagree with that. You get to decide things that have an actual effect on when you die.
>> You must not be a Presbyterian.
>> That's I'm for that reason and that reason alone. I'm not Presbyterian. You get to make decisions that affect when you die.
>> We're not getting into that right now.
But Trainer Joe um and I love my Presbyterian train. I'm sure deep down we probably have some way of agreeing.
>> Sure. I'm sure we do. um with the predestination stuff. Guys, if just real quick, cuz I I see a good comment here.
If this is hitting home and you appreciate it and you want this to get out there to more people, please hit that thumbs up button. We greatly appreciate that. Um so, Necessary Truth is kind of coming back around saying, "So, Trainer Joe, what are your thoughts on protein requirements for those who are wanting to lose weight?" We need protein. There's no doubt our body needs protein. You you can look at the research on it. Most are going to say you need about a gram per pound of body weight that you want to be. Some more than that, some less than that. I'd shoot for a gram. If you're working out, want to be strong, I would at least get a gram of per pound that you want to weigh.
>> So, if you want to weigh, >> A lot of us hear that and say, "That's a lot.
>> 15 pounds. Shoot for 150 gram." You don't have to.
>> If you're only getting 20, double it to 40.
>> Sure, >> that'll be better. But I would say, you know, you can look at the research. So, I'm just going with what I've looked at and I'm not extremely diligent, but I'm normally when I eat, I'm looking for most good protein.
>> I will say my wife has recently decided she wants to go hard and get in the best shape of her life. These are her words.
And so, she was telling me I'm going to get 110 grams of protein a day. And I was like, this might be a little extreme, babe. Like, I could see you dropping off the bandwagon after two days. But she's been posting pictures of what she's been eating and it is doable.
>> Oh yeah, it's doable. Especially if you throw in some protein shakes and go >> and and it's when you think about it, protein, if you're eating clean protein doesn't have a ton of calories.
>> No, not if that's Yeah. Right. It's if you're not eating stuff >> lower calorie, it's the stuff that comes with it.
>> Right. The bacon is not the culprit.
See, we we make the bacon the culprit when the culprit was the biscuits, the gravy, the orange juice, the tater tots, you know, all this other stuff. Trainer Joe is condoning bacon.
>> Yes, I'm condoning.
>> We need to shut this live stream down before you really go off your rocker.
>> I thought you were about to say bacon is the one meat that you don't allow.
>> I'm fine with it.
>> But you're right. You know, it's it's get getting your protein.
We can make we can go through all the numbers and people do the macros and some people just do better keeping real close track of it. I am more of the intuitive way of doing that because I can. if you can, that's I think that's better. But yeah, for getting that protein in, some tips would be um because I know it can be difficult. I drink a big protein shake after my workouts typically and it's for two days. I got to make a big old thing. I recommend people when they're doing my program, try to get protein with every meal. With your wife trying to get 100 grams, I would throw in one little pre-made probably a day just because it's easy to get 30 grams. Boom. In a little shot like that. Here's what just since we're on the protein. Here's the video of the picture she posted to her Instagram.
>> She had a 33 gram muscle milk protein shake. Not the best ingredients, but 33 g. For lunch, she took literally a rotisserie chicken with good seasoning to the park with her and the kids. And she literally just took a fork and ate off of that.
>> That'll get you good another 30 g.
>> She did a protein bar for a snack. And then she for dinner looks just like chicken. more chicken >> cut up with uh potatoes and veggies, >> right? So, it's not hard. It's just not as much fun as just going and eating the big old French fries and whatever you want, right? So, she's got a plan. As long as she does something like that every day, she's good to go. Is it going to be boring? Yes. Is she going to want to go off of it? Yes. Is she going to want ice cream and everything else that's not part of the plan? Yes. So, that's where the rubber is going to meet the road. Is she going to go through?
And that's what everybody is. Am I going to stay on my diet?
>> Yeah. All right.
>> That's great. That's great. Um, here one more question. Uh, I weighed 255 pounds in February. Brill and Agassa says, >> "And I've been at 236 for the past 3 weeks. I'm doing exactly the same thing as when I started, but it's not working anymore." Oh, you've heard this before.
You have heard this before. I have.
>> Any advice? So she's he or she has plateaued >> 255 235 for three weeks doing exactly the same thing. Okay. So why wouldn't that work? Well, one reason is you're not exactly the same person.
>> You've lost.
>> You've lost. So you're a different person trying to lose weight now. So start there. Start there. Here I am.
You're not a 255 person. You're a 236 person that just lost some weight that's now on a new journey of weight loss. And I would encourage you look at it like that. You got a new journey now. Here you go. I would also say be patient because I've seen a lot of people do what you just did.
>> Lose, lose, lose, >> lose, lose, lose, plateau, plateau, boom, lose, lose, lose, plateau. And the and the test was, are you going to be man enough to get through the plateau?
>> Are you man? Are you really in? Are you just playing games? Your body will will ask you that. Are you a man or a mouse?
Are you in or you out? You going to quit when it gets tough cuz you hit a plateau? What are you, a baby? Let's go.
Yeah, you're going to hit plateaus from time to time.
>> When you hit the plateau, are you got a choice? Are you going to spiral and go back or are you going to stay with it?
>> Hit a plateau, you got to go.
>> Hit a plateau, you pass no.
>> You got to go.
>> Trainer Joe, you brought the heat today.
>> I mean, you brought the heat. You brought It was borderline almost too intense. But we we appreciate it. We appreciate because you listen to your pumpup music and today was a little bit of warfare. It was a little bit of warfare today. Fair. It's it is. Let's end it. It's time for warfare.
I hear so much about the chemicals in our brains affecting. Go turn on the dang music you like. Get in the workout room. Go outside in the sun. Listen to something that's motivating. We It's time to act. It's time to act. And if if you need a little oomph to act, so many people in our program praise and glowing. This is wonderful. It's awesome. I'm loving I'm losing all this weight. No, it was just time to act. And you finally acted. you finally actually did it. There's so much looking at it, researching it, listening, listening, listening, listening, and but not the doing. It's time to do, and that's what we're inviting people to do. Do it with us. Do me a favor, guys. Well, first off, yes. If you want more and you're like, "Dude, this is right on." Join a 21-day transformation because there is more of this and it's the easiest way to lose the weight. I'm I'm all about the easiest way. Why do I want to do it a harder way if there's an easy way? The link is in the description. And we highly recommend that. The second thing I would ask is if you're like, "Man, this video is just non nonsense." And if blank this person would hear this video, I I'm convinced that it would change their trajectory that they're on. Please send it to them. Show it to them. We I think that that makes sense.
>> We exhort you.
>> Please >> share this with your friends.
>> Share it with your friends. Share it with your friends. All right, guys.
Thanks for tuning in. Thanks for those who tuned in live. It's always really fun just getting to see you guys interact.
>> Sorry I didn't get to talk to y'all much, but I see you here. Thank you.
Necessary truce and Kelly and Abigail and Tuy27.
Sister stopped eating Timmy's food and has lost one stone in two weeks. Thanks for your great advice. She stopped eating Timmy's food. It's all you got to do. You don't have to quit eating sugar or carbs. Just stop eating Timmy's food.
