[00:00:02]Planes used propellers. Then came the jet engine. German engineer Hans von Ohain developed one of the first operational jet engines. [music] Instead of propellers, it used fast-moving exhaust to generate thrust.

[00:00:16]Germany even made the first operational jet fighter during World War II. Though it wasn't ready to be used effectively.
