Unpaid State Taxes Could Hurt Your Naturalization Application

[00:00:00]When it comes to naturalization, does immigration only care about federal taxes, or do they also care about state and local taxes? Well, the short answer is that they care about all of them. If you look at the N-400 form, it specifically mentions federal, state, and local taxes. So, if someone owes overdue state or local taxes, a good example of that is New York City, where there's a city tax on top of the New York state tax, that could become an issue um when it comes to good moral character for naturalization. So, at this point, especially with the current administration, taxes have become a major priority. The government wants to make sure that the individual has paid all the taxes they owe to the government, whether that's federal, state, or local. So, if you're worried about this, or there's, you know, you have a more complicated tax situation, I definitely recommend speaking to an experienced immigration attorney to evaluate whether it could cause an issue with naturalization. Because if you file, and if it's an issue, you could just end up, you know, wasting money on the application if it can't be approved.
