I tested Vedaeyer rust remover seen in the YouTube ads to see if it really works as depicted.Added:
Hello and welcome to another episode of the scientist say farmer. Today we are going to be testing out a product that I've been seeing a lot of ads on on YouTube and I've been seeing a lot of chatter on it on message boards, too. It is called super concentrated rust remover and what they're doing in these ads is it's showing the material being sprayed on to a rusty part and then they're immediately washing it off with water and the part looks brand new.
Yeah, you're saying sounds pretty far-fetched. I thought the same thing.
We're going to be testing this out today and see just how accurate those claims are and then because I doubt it will work just like that, but then we're going to see what actually has to happen to make it work. So let's get started.
So here's the stuff right here. It's called highly concentrated rust remover for steel and iron. It is truly one of the finest things that China has to offer.
And I've got one of our test subjects right here, which is a quite rusty bolt.
So in the videos online, we're going to do exactly what they do and and we're going to find out how much BS this really is.
They are just spraying the bolts off.
I'm going to have to I think this thing is like I'm going to have to hold on.
Let's try that. Spray the bolt off.
And instructions say to leave it sit and then they immediately spray it off with water and it should be rust-free just like in the videos. It's going to be amazing. Let's check it out.
Damn. Look.
I just can't believe there's still so much rust on there. It's almost like the video is a bunch of BS, right? Actually though, No, I still think it looks really bad. I mean, it clearly doesn't look like what they did in the video.
So I think we can all agree that that video was kind of hokey. Although it is there is definitely a lot of rust coming off for sure. So we're going to try this again and I'm going to spray more on there. I'm going to let it sit a little longer and I'm going to scrub it. We're going to see exactly what has to happen to make all this rust come off. So we did just debunk what they showed in the video.
You can't just spray this stuff on and then wash it off with water and it looks good. I don't think any of us ever believed that and I just tested that and proved it to be not the case, but there is I am actually quite surprised at how much rust is coming off this thing. So I'm going to get the camera set up.
We're going to try a better experiment.
All right, trying this again now.
We've got our bolt.
I've kind of wiped it off. It's still rusty. So we're going to spray it down again and then we're going to let it sit for just a little longer.
While it sits, I'm now going to take this opportunity to talk about the ingredient label on here and I did not do that at the beginning because I just wanted to get down to brass tacks because no one likes to see people just blab and blab.
So the box actually has a few ingredients listed on it. And by the way, this box design is seen on many different uh brand names that all look the same thing. That's what China does. They they make one product and then everyone sells it under their own little name and it all looks the same. It has remarkable and hilarious English translations.
So if we look at the ingredients listing on here, it's got aqua, which is obviously water. It's got sodium laureth sulfate, which is a surfactant. It's a foaming agent. It's got dipropylene glycol methyl ether, which is a solvent.
And it's got sodium gluconate, which is a a keylator that's really effective at removing rust. It's got sodium hydroxide, which is going to increase the pH. And then it's got disodium EDTA, which is another keylator, which is also going to help remove rust. So there's no acidity to this at all. That's not how this is cleaning. This is basically a keylator, which means it grabs onto um uh the rust molecules and it is pulling them away. It is removing them. So this kind of works like Rust 911 or other keylating agents like that.
And and this brand is J Co rust remover for steel and iron. Looks exactly the same.
But it is sold under a bunch of different names if you look online. I bought this off Walmart. It's two little hilariously sized bottles and by hilarious I mean they're super tiny. Uh this is 4 oz.
Well, it's probably been I don't know.
It's been about 2 minutes. So let's see how my bolt here is doing. I'm just going to take a scouring pad, a red Scotch-Brite and kind of wipe it.
Let's see how much we've de-rusted it.
Going to spray it off once more.
It doesn't really have a whole lot of an odor.
It smells pretty neutral.
So that is what I still call a rusty bolt.
Although I will admit it does actually look quite a lot better.
Trying to look at it here um out of the camera.
It does look a lot better than when it started and that was just with a few minutes.
I bet if this thing were to soak, which is what I'm going to do next. I'm going to let this soak and I'm going to come back and we're going to see how much of a soak is required to get this rust off here.
But before we do that, I've got one other thing I want to try.
Over here, I've got a window regulator to move the window up up and down. Window crank arm or regulator. And we've got a little bit of rust here that's popping through.
I'm just going to spray some of this on that.
And again, if we're doing what their stupid fake AI video shows, you would just be able to spray that off with water and it's going to be clear. I think we've established that does not work.
So let's try to scrub this a little bit and see if we can get that rust out of there after just a short amount of time because they do say let it sit on there and then wipe it away.
Let's just wash it away here because they use water in their videos.
Well, that actually did clean that up a little bit.
More than I would have expected, but I was also scrubbing it. Let's just do this as a control with no no rust remover now to see how much it removes the rust just on its own as as a function of the pad.
And so I think a lot of that is probably the scouring pad just removing the rust.
But fortunately, we are going to do this scientifically.
We're going to add some to this right here and we're not going to use a scouring pad now. We're going to control for that.
Just let that sit just a little bit.
All right, let's wipe it off.
Again, I don't think this is going to work at all because it's been way too fast, but we're trying to do what they did in the videos.
Not going to lie, that actually did remove more rust than I thought it would, but the rust the rust is still there.
However, what I think the most effective way to do this is is if we use this and let it sit and scrub it away with this.
I have a feeling this is pretty much the exact same stuff as I mentioned Rust 911, Um, but also Evapo-Rust, which I know many of you are familiar with.
Um, a lot of people also mentioned to mix citric acid with EDTA.
>> [snorts] >> So, that removed a little bit more.
But again, this is not doing anything close to what we saw in the video. And part of making this video was A to test out this product that's been all the rage on YouTube ads.
And I could get it cheap enough.
But, what I'm going to do now is I'm just going to spray it and let it sit on this bolt head for just a little longer.
And and I'm going to time it and I'm going to see how long it needs to get all the stress completely off. And I'm going to come back and we're going to check that out.
So, what I've done is I have sprayed I put the bolt in there and I've sprayed that stuff on there and I'm just going to let it sit in there kind of half covered like that. And I'm going to see how long it takes to do that.
This stuff is really foamy and I think part of the reason they do that is to help uh, the stuff kind of stick on to the bolt or your surface without coming off right away.
Anyway, I'm going to get the timer going. Come back and check in a little bit. All right, it's been sitting in there for 10 minutes and one thing I have noticed is it seems like a lot of that water level in there has evaporated and that could be because there's a lot of solvent in there.
So, the water is staying behind, the solvent might be evaporating. I'm going to take it out now and check out what it's done.
So, here's our bolt.
And I'm just going to wipe this off with a pad.
Red Scotch-Brite.
Let's just see.
You know, I don't care about this bolt.
I'm sure some of you might have noticed that the threads are all mucked up. And then you might also say, "Why don't you just sandblast it?" And the fact is I I would.
I media blast all my bolts. But, for the purposes of making this video, I wanted to find something rusty and this was kind of the first thing I I reached for. All right. So, this is actually kind of cool.
We can see right there.
Let me try to get this to focus better.
You can actually see where the water line is that it was sitting in.
Right there.
And that's just from 10 minutes.
However, there is still a lot of rust on there and it doesn't look anywhere close to what a media blasted bolt looks like, which is this one and this is a bolt I've blasted long time ago, so it's starting to rust again. But, there's quite a big difference in these.
So, in the end, the little itty-bitty bottle of the highly concentrated rust remover for steel and iron did not live up to its hype and promise that we all saw on the ads on YouTube. I know that's not a real shocker, but I thought it would be interesting to test out nonetheless.
Conclusions of what I see here is I think it's just a it's another rust keylator product like Rust 911 and Evapo-Rust. Yes, I think it will remove rust, but it's going to take a soak. Do not expect to spray it on anything and then just immediately douse it with water and it's going to be shining clean like we saw in the ad.
I hope this was useful. Thanks for watching and I'll see you next time.
