Pomazano expertly shows how sophisticated voice leading and chord interchange turn a simple song into a professional masterpiece. It’s a rare, clear bridge between complex jazz theory and the actual feeling of a great performance.

Couch CRUSHING IT With "Slow Burn"Added:
Oh yeah, my friends. Michael Pomazano here.
Guitar Gate member for a long time. Ian West hits you with little Couch Slowburn. I love this band Couch. I mean, I really love this band Couch.
Okay, now I don't know if Slowburn is a Casey Musgraves cover or if it's one of their own songs, but Ian goes, "You'll love this one. Promise." Sold. Ian, this is for you. I couldn't be more stoked about it. Hit the button.
See, it's always these vibes.
See, they always do these crazy, they're not crazy, but just perfect inversions.
Like if you might, if you're listening with your ear and you're just like, you're just like, God, it's sounds smooth. I don't know how to describe it.
Like what what's kind of happening is there's like an upper triad and then there's the bass note and it's making these seventh chords. Um or there's like an inversion where like the name of the chord is not like the note in the bass but it's just perfectly voiceled meaning like the movement follows itself, right?
Like it it it doesn't have these crazy jumps. I don't even know why I'm describing it. I should just listen. I should just listen.
Feel this little on the high hats.
Congratulations.
You're my new crush.
If you want to click, congratulations on my new wish. If you want to click, you're in the perfect place.
I'm going to say it's empty to your face. Take you back to my place. Soon you'll be on your way.
Cuz once I'm cruising, I don't know how to stop.
Congratulations. You're my new crush.
>> What just happened, by the way, is I was looking down and I was getting lost in the progression. Then I realized, oh my god, she's singing here. Stop what you're doing. Go back. Listen to her like you're supposed to do.
There's just so much in here.
>> Congratulations.
You're in the perfect love. I'm going to say it's straight to your face. Take you back to my place.
Soon you'll be on your way.
Cuz once I'm cruising, I don't know how to stop.
Go through the motions, but that's not what I want. Ooh, I want that sober crushing back in high school.
>> Kiss me till my curw.
>> Kiss me till my curfew again.
>> I want to ache again.
I'm telling you, for those of you that aren't hip to couch, and I don't remember anybody's name in the band, I'm very, very sorry. Um, this is a serious band to be reckoned with. They sound amazing live. Just as tight, if not tighter. Um, like for real, for real. And all this voice leading. I'm trying not to nerd out too much and just listen right now. But there is some serious gold in here. This is one of those bands where at each turn they introduce something new and you're just like like that was so cool. Like there's so much cool stuff but it's all subtle, right? You all have you it this band is a real practice in active listening.
Anyway, keep going.
>> That's a little baby. What's the fun in planning the time and place?
Yeah. You could be my friends to lovers.
You could shake up all my butterflies.
Let's leave it all up to Cuz once I'm cruising, I don't know how to stop.
Go through the motions, but that's not what I want. Ooh, I want that summer crushing back in high school.
Kiss retail my curfew.
I want to again really.
All right. I don't mean to solo over his solo, but there's there's so many things I want to point out in here. Uh there's her vibe is immaculate. Immaculate. Um but there's a couple things, right? Uh the basic gist, and I know I know I'm not a jazzer, okay? I know I don't know all the voicings. You people are going to light me up in the comments, but my basic understanding of this, okay, is you got like a B sus, right?
going to a C sharp minor. C#arp minor 7.
There's probably some there's probably some some stuff in there. Sounds like that C#arp minor 7 gets interchanged with an E. Sometimes you hear an E in the bass, right? Same upper structure, right? And you can see the guitar player doing this this D to E thing a lot. D major to E major on top.
But I hear in the bass sometimes it's C sharp, sometimes it's E, right? And then it's got this and then there's like a G to an A in there, right?
So even though this is like a B sus thing like right you got this but then there's this part and there's in like in the chorus part when she's like like that is over a C major triad it sounds like right maybe it's got an A in the bass or maybe a straight C in this part in the lead it's like it's a minor 7 which is C over A but like so we're we're going back and forth between this C sharp minor right so this is an E triad right and then these two that that sound if you haven't right and then up to a D like this which of of course works because you're doing that, right? This but then that is such an easy to miss huge unlock, right? Um and it just it makes the chorus pop. You've been C# minoring for the whole time and then all of a sudden you get this C major vibe and even though you're throwing A's in the bass, right, it just it makes it just it makes it fly. It gives it that like like I don't know that floaty lydianish kind of sound and it just back in high school right like it just oh it's just going to be stuck in my head.
Those off beats, man.
Hear those horns.
>> I told you this band is ridiculous. This band is straight F. Look at the mustache.
If you don't believe me, long sleeves.
>> Just brush it off. This is what I'm talking. Listen to this.
>> That right. C major.
Right.
>> Crush it back in high school.
That that dude that >> really >> So is it really a see this is this This is where I get turned around with the jazz stuff. I know that I'm supposed to be looking for two five ones. I know it, right? I know that what I'm looking for is okay, I'm here. And then you get this, right? But it just it [ __ ] me up. I can't I can't, you know, like I want to Right. And then but that's not what it does. It's not what it does. The country blueg grass part of me wants that, right? But that's not what happens.
Kiss me.
>> Kiss me to my curve. I want to again.
I want to make you hear that that run.
Absolute money, guys, girls, dogs, cats, whatever. That is a perfect arrangement of a perfect song. That is spectacular.
Absolutely spectacular. Okay. Um, if I were to learn that song, I'd be forced to go back and really isolate the bass notes and the upper triads. I think I said that in the beginning of the video. Um, that's really what you have to do. And make sure the whole band has just perfect voice leading and no one's just like, "Oh, it's B." when it's really like you know B1 sus or you know B sus or right because that because it's things like that like you know you had a G and a B right makes me think G major you know you had an A and a C sharp even C sharp an old day and then you get a B and then you clearly have this sus thing happening right so it makes you think B minor but is it is it really or is it right? And are they borrowing and in that C sharp right are we sometimes putting that E in the bass? Does it only happen on some verses? I don't know.
But then do we really push into a straight ahead C major for the chorus?
And then and then do we 251 for like see you see where I'm getting at like like you'd have to think about it. Uh for a lot of you out there you'd be like no you don't Michael this is standard stuff. I'm telling you for 90 for those of you that feel that way for 95% of the people in the world that play music this is not standard stuff.
Um, and even if you understand it, I want you to realize how great they are at selling it and making it accessible, palatable, whatever. Hookie, memorable is the word to non-m musicians.
Like crushed it. Okay. Crushed it, right? Um, and there's so much ear candy in here and she is just the perfect delivery vehicle. boy is she fantastic.
Um, and as far as the actual song goes, um, you know, my oldest son is, you know, gonna be 16 and I listen to these songs like a crushed back in high school, kissed me till my curfew, and I'm just like, "Oh my god, I just I can't believe that we're here." But I also know that he's got a girl on the other side that's like having feelings like this. And it's just like and he doesn't know how he's feeling. And I just I don't know. This [ __ ] floors me.
I just can't believe we're here. That's it, my friends. I love you all very much. If you dig the vibe, please hit subscribe. Let me know what you think in the comments.
