Human beings were bought, sold, whipped, and treated like property. Over 12 million Africans were forced to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Many died before they ever reached American soil. Families were torn apart forever.

Businesses profited from human suffering. Politicians protected it. Men, women, and children worked from sunrise to darkness under violence and fear. Mothers watched children sold away. Husbands disappeared from wives. Escape often meant torture or death. In 1865, slavery officially ended, but oppression did not. Jim Crow laws enforced segregation. Lynchings spread terror across the South. Chain gangs and prison labor replaced plantations for many black Americans.
