Weather forecasting involves analyzing upper-level atmospheric patterns, including jet stream position and moisture availability, to predict precipitation timing and intensity; when the jet stream shifts northward and moisture flows from the southeast, rain chances increase, with Memorial Day weekend historically being the wettest weekend of the year.

KSHB 41 Weather Blog | Dry Today & Memorial Day then ChangesAdded:
Here's an average temperature for the one weather center. All right, well, where are we on rainfall? Well, in the first two weeks of May, it was dry across the area. Now, May and June on average the wettest months of the year, average 5.32 in of rain. Takes about an inch of rain per week to keep the yard green this time of year. You get pretty good evaporation rates. And so, first 15 days, it was really dry. How about since then? Well, it has rained quite a bit.
Pleasant Hill is the winner there, above average already at 5.33, but everybody else still below average. But, we are on pace here to be about average, and we do have more rain on the way. So, most locations I think will end up being around average before this month is over, which is some good news as we go into the growing season. So, let's take a look at the upper-level flow, and for Monday, we have a jet stream that splits out in the Pacific, and the blue is the main jet stream. The storm on the entering the Pacific Northwest, the main jet stream goes way to the north, which is good if you don't want severe weather because it takes that stronger flow aloft to create the severe weather. But, there is a southern stream with a little system down near Las Vegas, and a upper-level high heat wave creating machine off the southeast coast. And we're kind of in a little mini ridge here with a system down there near Dallas. I didn't put the little low there, but technically you could put a little low there. Now, what happens between Monday and Thursday?
The main jet stream goes way to the north. Look at that, almost all the way to the North Pole, way up there. The system that was over Las Vegas is getting closer to us. The system that was over the Pacific Northwest, or just off the Pacific Northwest coast, is now into Nevada and California, northern California. And the upper-level high in the southeast has kind of extending up into the Great Lakes, but we are west of the ridge, and we're in southeast flow aloft, and that's should very likely increase the rain chances.
The only way it doesn't rain here is if everything shifts a little farther west, and we're in the ridge, but it looks like we're going to be in the rain. So, as we take a look at our power cast for today, it's going to be great. Now, this has 79, it's going to be probably in the low 80s, low humidity, looking pretty good. Then tonight down to the upper 50s and your 60, then tomorrow into the 80s, 83, 85, 86°. We're going 86, that model has 83, but it's dry. And on Tuesday in the morning, dropping down around 63, you're going to start to notice the humidity increase.
Tuesday, possibly a little bit on Memorial Day, but still pretty good. But then look what happens on Tuesday afternoon, we start to see the rain and thunderstorms. Remember, everything's coming from the southeast, and so down into the Ozarks and those areas get some pretty heavy downpours. We're on the edge, so just a slight chance of rain on Tuesday, but we get into Wednesday, all of a sudden now, I notice the low in the 60s, that shows you the humidity is a lot higher. And so, you wouldn't have drier air, you have warm days and cooler nights. When it's humid, the lows stay higher. And so, warmer air holds more warmer air holds more water, and when there's more water in the air, it doesn't want to cool down, if that makes any sense. But what I mean is, is it warm and humid, temperatures will be in the mid upper 60s, and you can see Wednesday morning some showers and thunderstorms, but they'll they'll flare up more in the afternoon.
Because the flow is weak, the severe threat is very low. These aren't these big complexes of huge areas of rain and thunderstorms. They're going to be smaller areas of rain and thunderstorms, not severe, but some heavy downpours.
And you may get some low-end severe thunderstorm could have some gusty winds with it or something like that, but overall, you're not looking at a big rain big severe weather situation. And then in the evening, things kind of ramp down a little bit, and still meander in some spots, but temperatures will only be in the 70s during the day, especially if it rains most of the day.
And then as you see on Thursday, get back into some heavy downpours.
May not be as solid as this in some locations. And sometimes it might be Thursday night and Friday when this main system comes out, we may get a more solid area of rain and some thunderstorms. And you see the low in the 60s on Friday, Friday afternoon in the 70s.
Didn't go past Friday because there's some uncertainty for the weekend, but I think most of the rain will move out by the weekend. We'll have to watch if the system kind of gets stuck here, then it may linger into the weekend. We're going to go drier for next weekend though as of this moment. Total rainfall. Well, you can see mostly to the southeast and then it kind of works its way up to the north and west. And we are looking at a situation where about most locations will see 1 to 2 inches of rain. A few could see 2 to 4. A few may see a little less than that. Now, keep in mind 1 to 2 inches of rain is about an average rainfall for 1 week this time of year.
So, that's about average rain. Now, some spots could see a little bit more than that, obviously, but some could see a little less. And all locations really don't need any rain. It's been rather wet and we don't want it to rain on the Memorial Day weekend and it's not going to cuz these are the wet whether the Memorial Day weekend's on the third or fourth weekend of the month. It's on average the wettest month wettest weekend of the year. And we had rain Friday, which wasn't really the weekend.
We had a lot of rain yesterday south of Kansas City. And now there's not going to be any rain nearby today or tomorrow.
80 to 85 today, 55 to 56 tonight. Lots sunshine, clear sky, light wind.
Tomorrow around 85, warm still humidity in check. On the super 10-day forecast, we are looking at a slight chance of thunderstorms Tuesday and then much better rain chances Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then they'll taper off over the weekend. May linger into Saturday.
And next weekend we'll see how that goes. And also we are looking at great weather for the Royals game, the current uh today, great weather for Day and the Royals again on Memorial Day. Maybe they can go on a winning streak. They finally have one win in a row. So, let's see what they can do. Look, guys, Royals are better than what they have been showing. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, a meaningful Memorial Day weekend, and week ahead.
