For four brutal years, Michelangelo lay on his back, paint dripping into his eyes, his neck screaming in agony. He wrote bitter poems about his suffering, complaining that his beard caught paint drops like a bucket. In letters to friends, he called the project torture. He begged to return to sculpture. Yet stroke by agonizing stroke, he created nine scenes from Genesis across 6,000 square ft of ceiling. The reluctant painter had accidentally created his greatest legacy.
