The Biafran War Part 3 | How Hunger Became A Weapon In Nigeria’s Civil War #history #Biafra #NigeriaAdded:
Do you know what happened after the world saw starving children in Biafra?
In part two, the Nigerian Civil War had already begun. Bombs were falling, villages were burning, and hunger was spreading [music] across Biafra. But what happened next made the war even more horrifying.
As food disappeared, >> [music] >> desperation took over daily life inside Biafra.
Parents [music] searched endlessly for anything their children could eat. Some families survived on lizards, [music] leaves, and dirty water. Others walked for miles hoping [music] to find relief camps with food.
If you haven't watched part one and part [music] two yet, go back and watch them first because this is where the suffering became impossible to ignore.
And before we continue, subscribe to Griots [music] of Africa, turn on notifications, and select all notifications [music] so you never miss the untold African history many schools never taught.
>> [music] >> Soon, hospitals became overwhelmed.
There was barely [music] any medicine, barely any food, and thousands of starving children [music] developed kwashiorkor from severe hunger.
Their bodies [music] became painfully weak, their stomachs swelled unnaturally, and many became too weak to even cry.
Then, [music] the photographs escaped Biafra. Images of starving children spread across newspapers and television around the world.
>> [music] >> For many people outside Africa, it was the first time they truly saw the horror of the war, and suddenly [music] international organizations rushed to help. Pilots began flying dangerous nighttime missions into Biafra [music] carrying food and medicine. Some planes crashed, some were shot at, but they kept flying.
Intensely, [music] the Nigerian government tightened its blockade even further because military leaders believed starving Biafra [music] would end the war faster.
And as the blockade grew stronger, more civilians died.
>> [music] >> The war was no longer just about territory. It had become a fight for survival [music] itself.
But even after all the suffering, Biafra [music] still refused to surrender.
How long could they possibly [music] hold on?
Comment below and follow Griots of Africa for part [music] four.
