[00:01:13]There was barely [music] any medicine, barely any food, and thousands of starving children [music] developed kwashiorkor from severe hunger.

[00:01:22]Their bodies [music] became painfully weak, their stomachs swelled unnaturally, and many became too weak to even cry.

[00:01:32]Then, [music] the photographs escaped Biafra. Images of starving children spread across newspapers and television around the world.

[00:01:42]>> [music] >> For many people outside Africa, it was the first time they truly saw the horror of the war, and suddenly [music] international organizations rushed to help. Pilots began flying dangerous nighttime missions into Biafra [music] carrying food and medicine. Some planes crashed, some were shot at, but they kept flying.

[00:02:06]Intensely, [music] the Nigerian government tightened its blockade even further because military leaders believed starving Biafra [music] would end the war faster.

[00:02:17]And as the blockade grew stronger, more civilians died.
