[00:00:00]In 1941, a tiny American garrison faced an impossible fight against Japanese forces in Guam. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan moved quickly across the Pacific. Its goal was to seize key islands, secure vital supply routes, and build a defensive empire stretching across the ocean.

[00:00:24]Located in the Marana Islands, Guam was an American territory and an important strategic outpost in the Pacific. But in December 1941, its defenses were dangerously weak. Only a small force of US Marines, sailors, local guardsmen, and island police stood between Guam and the Japanese military. There were no modern coastal defenses, few aircraft, and almost no hope of resisting a full-scale invasion.

[00:00:54]On December 8th, 1941, just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, due to the international date line, Japanese aircraft began bombing the island.

[00:01:04]Explosions struck military positions, communication centers, and defensive sites. The defenders fought back where they could, but they were heavily outnumbered.

[00:01:15]For 2 days, Guam endured repeated air attacks while Japanese invasion forces moved closer. Then before dawn on December 10th, Japanese troops landed on the island. Thousands of experienced soldiers came ashore from multiple directions, supported by naval forces and aircraft overhead. The American defenders were hopelessly outmatched.

[00:01:37]Small groups of Marines and sailors fought delaying actions around the island, exchanging fire with advancing Japanese troops and attempting to slow their advance. But the outcome was becoming clear. Japanese forces quickly captured key roads, communication centers, and military positions. As casualties mounted and ammunition supplies dwindled, the defenders faced an impossible choice. Continue a hopeless fight or surrender. Recognizing that further resistance would only lead to unnecessary deaths, Governor George McMillan ordered the island to surrender. After less than 3 days of fighting, Guam had fallen. But Guam's story was not over. In 1944, American forces would return in one of the Pacific War's largest amphibious invasions to reclaim the island. The fall of Guam became one of Japan's earliest victories after Pearl Harbor and a reminder of how quickly the Pacific War was expanding. The Pacific theater had entered a dangerous new phase.
